Is focused shot as I think it is?

Focused Shot

Spoiler:

Focused Shot (Combat)
Your anatomical insight adds deadliness to your shots.

Prerequisites: Int 13, Point Blank Shot, Precise Shot.

Benefit: As a standard action, you may make an attack with a bow or crossbow and add your Intelligence modifier on the damage roll. You must be within 30 feet of your target to deal this extra damage. Creatures immune to critical hits and sneak attacks are immune to this extra damage.

Special: Starting at 2nd level, a ranger with the archery combat style may select Focused Shot as a combat style feat.

So, in order to get extra damage from your intellegence modifier, you can only make one ranged attack in the round?

That is correct.

Correct, you can only make a single ranged attack if you want the Focused Shot feat extra damage bonus.

It works well when you are not able to get your full attack action off.

Would this bonus damage from INT be on top of any existing bonuses to damage, for example, the potential strength bonus on a composite bow, or an enhancement bonus due to magic bow and/or arrows?

Yes, but who cares? This becomes crap soon as you hit 6 BAB. Especially since I doubt your Int will be that high anyway.

Also, I think someone accidentally your topic.

In one of my games, a wizard (transmuter) took archery feats PBS, PS, ect.. for his crossbow and rays plus he would buff himself with gravity bow, once he could take Focused Shot he did. Was it a min/max thing no he didn't spend feats on boosting his spell DC's or item crafting but hey he had fun and never a dead round early on, as he leveled the crossbow saw less and less use but it was still cool.

In games where people dislike the game and cap it roughly at "just starts to get interesting," this MIGHT be a worthwhile feat for crossbow enthusiasts. It is still useless for bow users because they can take Rapid Shot and Manyshot. However, if you are a crossbow enthusiast, you can just get Crossbow Mastery.

i would argue that the ranged power attack feat would be better then this one, and vital strike with gravity bow will make this feat worthless.

In an E6 game, this might be marginally useful for crossbow ranged combatants. Above E6, it's crap.

I have used it effectively at higher level. Archers with shot on the run and this feat can wreck havoc with enemies without taking any damage by moving out from cover, shooting and moving back into cover.

Except you can't. Focused Shot is a standard action. Shot on the Run is a full round action.

Thanks for the replies. I was really hoping that focused shot could be used for each attack during full round. Oh well.

The Exchange

this might work for a snipper - I have a high INT rogue (one level of Wizard too) that will try to hide and snipe - so this would add a little damage - not sure if it's worth the feat though...

Even in an e6 game for crossbow enthusiasts it's a trap. Vital Strike with a light crossbow adds 4.5 damage. They can't be used together because vital strike can't be used with *anything* except flyby attack because only monsters and casters can have nice things. You must have at least 20 int for focused shot to be better than vital strike. If you're also small vital strike still adds 3.5 damage which is better than focused shot at less than 18 int.

Since an e6 game spends a lot of time at level 6 (otherwise it's just a normal game that gets cut short) it's probably not worth the feat.

Add in Kirin Strike and things get kinda fun. Intelligence modifier x 3 added to damage stacks fast. Deadly Aim, Arcane Strike, Point Blank Shot...

Not all feats are necessarily meant for PC's. This feat jumped out at me as a great way to add extra damage to a sniping assassin (prestige class assassin).

Is it the be all, end all of archery feats, nope, but it's nice for flavor.

Ranged characters should be getting a full attack off pretty much always, though.

For a spellslinger, it works very well. Focussed shot+deadly aim with a musket = good damage for the one shot (double barrel) per round you get. Move action reload (rapid reload feat + alch cartridge), beneficial bandolier free reload for the 2nd barrel.

For anyone else, it's not worth it. Even for this build you need to check if your GM will allow focussed shot to work on both barrels. The argument for it working is a) you're making a single attack; b) you're not getting a feat that benefits your spells, therefore you're actually weakening your character overall.

Two words; Bow Spirit

This would be a decent feat if it applied to any ranged attack (rays!) instead of just bows and crossbows. As it is, it's kinda crummy. Myrmidarch, maybe....? Nah, there are better ways to spend a standard action.
