When did *those* show up? They're really nice!

Paizo Employee Senior Software Developer

7 people marked this as a favorite.

We *just* rolled them out. As GMs visit their gameplay, recruitment and discussion threads, they'll be prompted to hook them up to campaigns, which enables the nifty display of players and characters, and the tabbed interface for all threads related to the campaign.

Also new are the Aliases and Campaigns tabs on your profile page, which should hopefully make it a bit easier to manage multiple play-by-posts.

I went ahead and hooked up Heathy's Isle of Dread thread for an example. Here's the characters in that campaign. Here's the players.

What Gary said. I had gone to check the IC thread for a campaign I'm running, and got prompted to add the IC, OOC, and recruitment threads to a campaign description, with tabs for players and characters.

Paizo Employee Senior Software Developer

Here's the list of campaigns the system currently knows that Heathy's running. As he connects his other campaigns they will show up there.

If you are a GM for play-by-posts, you can go to your campaigns tab on your profile page to connect them all up.

Pretty dang sweet Gary!

LOL, ok. I get it. I think it is cool. I was just confused because there was no link or description in the opening post. Maybe my pbp game can use this. :)

The caffeinated construct approves.

Cute. Love it!

How can I connect a campaign that I've taken over as DM from someone else to this system?

By the way, it sounds like a great addition to the forums!

The Exchange

I assume that this functionality only works for whoever "creates" the thread?

Would there be any way for DMs who inherit a game to use these new tools?

So only GMs can sort our aliases into campaigns? There's no way for me to sort out my PCs myself?

In all my born days, I would never have expected anyone to use Heathy as a -GOOD- example...

Fantastic idea and execution, by the way!!

The association of PCs and players to campaigns is automatic for now. We'll probably give GMs a tool to fine-tune those lists for their campaigns.

If you've inherited a campaign, for now, email me at webmaster@paizo.com and I'll hook it up.

The Exchange

Now I know why my Google Reader Blew up. It was showing me messages from way back, but now I've got it back under control. These look nice and shiny.

Me gusta.

Paizo Employee Senior Software Developer

I tried to make sure that RSS feeds wouldn't break from relocating the play by post forums, but I think they might break when the GM connects them to a campaign. I'm not sure what I can do about that at the moment.

*confusion* I'm playing in 8 games, but only one of them is showing up on the campaigns tab. Is that because the DM has already set it up, or is it supposed to be working automatically?

Liberty's Edge

These are pretty frickin' sweet. Thanks!

RE: This quote ^

Ding ding ding!

Big question- I was coming here to post it myself. This happens an awful lot, as DM's tend to drop off. I have an inherited IC thread and an inherited OOC thread i'd like to link up into a campaign, for example.

If you'd like to do it for me Gary, its-

GM Tanners Carrion Crown Game

For the game thread, and i'd like it linked to this Campaign Thread I just made-

Link

I created the Campaign using the correct discussion thread so you can leave that as is, but could you change the title to 'Alexander Kilcoyne's Carrion Crown'?

General Feedback

Its a really good idea that will help a lot- I would suggest adding a 'House Rules' tab that the DM can edit though, people are much more likely to see them there (at the moment I have this vain hope they look at my DM profile to see them). Possibly it could go into Campaign Info but I think a tab of its own would be magnificent.

Yup, DM has to set it up for you to have the fancy new interface. Not everyones as fast as me Joana ;)

Edit: Sorry I didn't email you Gary, that message wasn't there when I was typing my long one above ^

Paizo Employee Senior Software Developer

For now the campaign info is the place to put house rules and such. I want to be cautious about adding new tabs for the time being.

This is AWESOME! :D

Thanks so much for implementing this. I've updated my campaign to use the new format.

Question: Within the next month or so, I'm expecting to spin-off a separate adventuring party from the main group, but I'd like to keep all the discussion for both games in the same thread. Is that possible?

I'm interested to see how this will work with defunct PbP threads in the future. Lots of people reuse aliases from dead games to join new ones. Will they be able to be added to a new campaign if the GM has dropped off the face of the earth and doesn't "release" them? Will a GM adding their alias to a new campaign automatically remove them from the old one?

Just to be clear, love the idea and the implementation, Gary. I just tend to poke and prod at new things to be sure how they're going to work in the long run. :)

Ok thanks- could you sort out my inherited game as mentioned above though?

Another feedback- we'll need some place to retire dead games, or our campaign sections could get really cluttered. Like removing the dot in Focus.

Wow with a side of awesome.
I just finished GMing my first PbP and am prepping the next.
This will enhance play greatly.

Thanks Gary and team!!!

The tools on our side for dealing with campaigns that have switched GMs are a little wonky at the moment. For now please email webmaster@paizo.com if you have inherited a campaign.

I need:

A link to your profile page (click on your name at the top where it says "Welcome, your name!"

A link to each of the gameplay threads for the campaigns you have inherited.

Just copy and paste these links from the address bar in your browser, please.

Thanks!

Is that Pathfinder Specific or will it include other systems as well?

Right now it's one campaign per discussion thread. I might be able to change that but I'm wary of breaking all my new shiny code.

I am under no illusions that this system is perfect as it is. I wanted to release it in the most basic functional form and get feedback as to the kinds of things we need to improve in it. So no promises but these seem like reasonable requests.

I am a very happy camper. This is super-nice toolkit. Thank you!

I don't think there's anything in the code yet that's Pathfinder specific.

Huh... I have not been gifted with the new abilities yet.

But then, I took over a campaign and never had recruitment for either.

*sniff sniff*

*puppy dog eyes at other GM's awesome pages*

'Yet'? does that mean there are plans in the works?

Will we be able to disassociate a discussion thread from a campaign thread, if we should (for instance) want to have a new play thread for every chapter of an AP, but want to maintain the same discussion thread throughout?

Yes, though you'll end up with a separate campaign for each gameplay chapter that way.

Go to the campaign info tab for the previous chapter, click "edit this campaign." Click the "unset" button next to the discussion thread and save changes. Then go to the discussion tab for the new gameplay campaign and reconnect the thread to the new campaign.

+1.

Got my three PbPs set up with the new goodies; I dig it muchly so far! Aside from the obvious immediate advantages, this also will make it way easier for me to link to campaign materials (maps, NPC rosters, etc.) for folks since said links will also be easily available and not buried in some OOC oubliette, never to be retrieved save by the most daring of thread-spelunkers.

Thanks a ton, website folks! Love it!

I apparently herped pretty hard. Have my campaigns set up, and is pretty sweet. Thanks, Paizo folks.

This is probably intentional, but on the off-chance that it isn't (and even if it is, it's good to be aware of it): I've noticed that PBP posts no longer show up on the list of recent messageboard posts.

Paizo Employee Senior Software Developer

There should be a new box just below that one labeled "online campaigns." It won't show if you've collapsed all the play-by-post forums though.

Edit: I just noticed the new box is on the front page but wasn't on messageboards pages. It should be there now.

This box is not showing up for me in chrome and windows 7 do you have to actually be in a campaign to have this show up? I am in play by posts just don't think my gms have created a campaign yet.

edit ninjaed by GAry.

Hey, I just noticed that the alias defaults to my PC when I'm posting in a campaign thread. That's very cool.

Paizo Employee Senior Software Developer

We aim to please! Although this code might not play well with the older "mark as default alias" code. Let us know if you run into any weirdness.

Whoa this new feature is fantastic. I got goose bumps when I clicked on the in character thread and saw the new format. First the new prd format and now this, you are taking this site to new heights. Thank you, Thank you, Thank you.

I think I'm inspired enough to gm a pbp campaign now.
