The description says that the ranger loses favored terrain, but they still get camoflauge. Can they still use it somehow?
If you could cite where you found Sable Company Marine, that would be great. The only reference I could find to it was in the Guide to Korvosa. In that publication it only speaks of a Feat.

The archetype in question was presented here, as part of the "Golarion Day" blog posts. As such, it was more or less thrown together by me as a sort of experiment...
But yeah... the hippogriff companion only replaces the first favored terrain the ranger would get. He can still use camouflage, but doesn't gain his first favored terrain until 8th level. Which is still before he gains camouflage, so it's all good!

Thanks, updating the Sable Company MArine on the d20pfsrd.

That's some really good stuff James, but don't you think it would be better as a 5 level Prestige Class? Seems like more can be done with the concept to me. Such as granting benefits relating to archery or fighting from the hippogriff mount/companion?

First of all... I hate 5 level prestige classes. They're kinda pointless, in my opinion, and start to drift too close to the "dip" mentality. A prestige class with 10 levels represents a much larger commitment, so if I did the Sable Company marine as a prestige class... it'd be a 10 level class.
Furthermore... there's really not much to the Sable Company marine beyond the fact that they bond with and ride hippogriffs. That's hardly enough to build a 10 level (or, frankly, even a 5 level) prestige class from.
Also (and I might be misremembering here) I believe all Sable Company marines HAVE to be rangers. That's exactly what an archetype does—it modifies one class. A prestige class does not; anyone of any class who meets the requirements can take levels in that class.
And finally, since you can technically take an archetype at 1st level (even if you don't yet swap stuff out), this lets us call 1st level rangers in training to be Sable Company marines that. If it's a prestige class, you're locked in at a higher level before you can be called such. And since lower level Sable Company marines are more important, world wise, for Korvosa's flavor than 15th level ones... archetype's a better choice.

Good explanation, thanks. Perhaps adding another replacement ability deeper into the archetype might further distinguish a normal Ranger from a Sable Company Marine then?

Perharps force all sable company marine rangers to be urban rangers?
Even force them to chose urban as their first favored terrain?Aspasia de Malagant |

This seems plausible, but Marines, at least in history are the infantry force aboard naval vessels, so perhaps something nautical related would be just as appropriate?

I'm not convinced that's necessary—the main thing that distinguishes a normal ranger from a Sable Company marine is the hippogriff and that's pretty much it. Also... keeping that the only thing different makes it easier for you to take an additional archetype if you wish.
