Why do some male games use female avatars and some female gamers use male avatars?

Just wondering why that is? I mean I can understand Males playing a female charater on occasion or a female playing a male character on occasion, but why use an avatar of the opposite gender? I can understand using a beastie like a bugbear or dragon as well.

It confuses me as names do not match. I'd kind of like to know who is female and who is male just for the sake that we female games are very few compared to you males.

3 people marked this as a favorite.

Don't look at me, I use a frickin' boat.

Grand Lodge

I use this one not only because it's Asmodeus but, honestly, I kinda look like this in real life.

Now THIS is a great topic for discussion, thank you Iceni Queen! I am assuming that since you brought up the topic, you in fact are a woman.

I am male and I use a male avatar (I think), or at least it looks male. I personally do not understand the transgender avatar thing at all, it strikes me as bizarre, really. I'm not sure if these guys want me to think their avatar is hot, or what? If I talk to them, will they think I only like them for their avatar? Lol.

Btw Kajehase, are you REALLY a boat, or are you using a misleading avatar too?? I also hate it when people use inanimate objects for avatars, cuz you never know if you're really debating with a chair, or if that's actually a person in disguise. Very devious...

*snerk*

I am now thinking of the villain from the Tick animated series, Chairface.

*laughs*

I prefer using female avatars and playing female characters, because I don't think like a man. I know there's more involved than just pretending to convincingly portray one.

Lol, I love The Tick. You bring up a very interesting point though, about "thinking and/or feeling like a man/woman" having to do with how people choose avatars. Food for thought.

Yes I am in fact female. I can prove it to if you find the post about what you look like or sock puppet or something.

HERE

I just find it interesting that guys use female avatars.Hu5tru, are you TG? If you are I applaud you. I ask because no male I know would ever say that unless they where. I understand if you don't say anything as I know that maturity of some gamers.

Hey, I'm a guy and I have a female avatar. I just like naked women with swords.

Silver Crusade

<--- Just look at that smile. Reminds me to keep positive.

Sometimes.

Also, favorite iconic from the Dragon/Dungeon days.

Yeah, I hate those guys. I mean, who in their right mind would have a username/avatar of an inanimate object? =P

Whoa, dudes. This is, like, soooo sureal. Are you real? Am I real? Is anybody really real.?

Bong hit?

I actually picked an avatar that looks kind of like me. Were I an angry dwarf with hideous fashion sense. ;)

But I think folks tend to just pick what is either aesthetically pleasing to them, amuses them, or represents the personae they want to reflect online. I DO often assume gender matches avatar and get corrected for that sometimes but--you do the best you can. On the other hand, I don't assume James Jacobs is a tyrranosaurus, for example (but who knows, I could well be wrong). Since this is a gaming board, people also choose avatars that resemble their favorite RP character, which may be a different gender than themselves. (Just as often on other boards, people use avatar pictures of their favorite character from a TV show or whatever, even if it has nothing to do with what they look like.)

Now, I've been the victim of the "no one on the Internet is female" assumption, especially since I don't have a "girly" avatar name--despite my using a female avatar, I've often been called "he". But normally it's a quick move to correct and move on.

If you really want to know who is a woman on these boards for some reason, best to just throw up a poll (I think there was one like that awhile back). But I think people should be able to choose whatever avatar they like.

My avatar is genderless, does that mean I'm sexually ambiguous or just in dire need of a good skull f@$!ing?

Whoa.

Also, drooling rat.

I picked mine because I needed a few years to figure what the heck it actually is.

I'm leaning towards ooze.

I chose the invisible stalker avatar.

Isn't that redundant?

i'm unsure of my gender.

or that of my avatar. ;-)

seriously, who cares? if the shoe fits...

Shadow Lodge

I share my avatar with DreamingPsion. It seemed to fit best. I would rather have an avatar of a wine glass or grapes (to match my name), but I couldn't find one.

My characters are about 50/50 male and female. I couldn't say whether I portray a man or a woman more realistically, but ultimately, I don't think it matters, much.

I can appreciate the desire to know who is male and who is female, especially if it's an underrepresented minority trying to identify other members of that minority.

Whatever. Most people don't know my status, anyway.

Female player, female avatar here. I'm rather gothy, so a pale-skinned woman wrapped up in chains (including through her skin and eyes) appealed. :D

Ironically, I have no piercings IRL and actually hate the idea of body piercings. Yes, I'm a weirdo.

Of course if an alias is for a female play by post character by a male player then that makes sense.

Dark Archive

Males with female avatars? I'm shocked. SHOCKED.

Don't forget, "Girls don't play D&D or games for that matter". Though I think both of those assumptions have eased up over the years.

Not weird at all. No piercings, no tattoos here, either.

NAHHHH I'm a wee bit Goth myself. Not a Tattoo one on my body or in my house that screems "Boss The Plane, The Plane!" But I do have two piercings in my ears, one of which is closed... so I can be a pirate. I loves pirates

wow. What a weirdo.

Why spend money on tatoos or body piercings when you can get more patfinder books?

Yeah, sexy women are easy on the eyes. That's why I chose my new avatar.

Just wait until I post cosplay pics of my avatar.

I don't really look all withered and decayed.
