You realize that First Edition was not the first edition.

Yes it is that's why it's called First. Duh...Before that it was color coded. But Red was the devils color and Blue was the color of a demon or something. So TSR started using Numbered editions, otherwise we would be fighting over Pathfinder vs D&D Aquamarine edition. Or Chartreuse. Ohh that is eye burning.

no chainmail jokes?

9. You modify all pre-published adventures you DO run just enough to throw off those players who like to read ahead (but don't admit it).

10. Save or Die is a way of life - Your campaign did not adopt the kinder gentler Pathfinder way of handling these types of spells...

11. You have developed several ways of countering the 15 minute adventuring day.

Amen! I even use a modified one in the proper order.

Yup. Still use.

There *was* a reference to Morgan Ironwolf earlier... the *original* chainmail mini-skirted, Breck shampoo girl.

Or did you mean Chainmail miniature rules? (I think that is taking it a back a bit too far... only old bastards like me would remember that.)

Emirikol.

"But he's not evil..."

Aw come'on! Emirikol was blasting that poor lackey for no good reason. He was either Chaotic Evil or Chaotic Surly.

Hm... guess I'm an old bastard, too. :)

Still, I was quite young (and naive) when I wrote a letter to Gygax about Chainmail and actually expected to get an answer.

When Multi-Classing meant you split your XP between the two classes.

When playing a Mage took more XP thatn a fighter that took more XP for a rogue to level up.

When only none-humans could be multi-class

When duel class meant you started life as 1 class and latter changed to a different class i.e Thief 1 - 6 level and latter fighter

When only humans could be duel class

When you speak of the Basic set you refer to the old blue book not the 2nd edition of 1st edition Basic

When Psyonics where listed in the back of the players hand book and they still confused you to all heck.

When you know that the Melbonian Gods and Hero's, HP Lovecraft Dieties, and Fafyd and Grey Mouser wher ein the original Dieties and Demi Gods

When everyone wanted Black Razor and you loved killing party members to prevent them from getting it

When no one used Mini's or anything to represent characters.

When you are excited to hear a 4th HB book was coming out that expanded the PH, DMG and MM affter so many years of just 3 HB books.

Emirikol the Chaotic... there was no good or evil as such yet.

Of course Chaos was evil.

The Gods of Melibone and the Lovecraft critters were certainly in the original Deities and Demigods (I've had a copy since I swapped my original Runequest boxed set for it in school a long, long time ago) but the Grey Mouser stuff survived into the 2nd edition Legends and Lore book. Chaosium had the rights to the other two and they launched a law suit, hence their removal from later editions. Blood and Souls!

Actually, from the more reliable reports that I've seen Chaosium did NOT start a lawsuit. TSR did find out that they were obligated to include a reference to the Chaosium games if they were going to use those materials, and they decided that they would rather drop the material than advertise a competitor's product.

Makes me glad that Paizo seems happy to point their customers towards Chaosium.

You know the weapon type indicates how it is used.

You penalize the rogue for trying to sneak around with a weapon larger than a shortsword.

What the hell is a feat?

I'm so old skool D&D I even named my kid Morgan.

The Trampier illustration was in the 1st Edition AD&D DMG. There were nine alignments.

Without looking it up, does anybody remember the name of the pub that had been hosting the local constabulary?

I want to say "Green Griffin"... I think there was a griffon on the sign outside... not totally sure though.

Indeed it was.

Good article on the reference page too about the changing aesthetics. Interesting as I have been told a lot lately that I have a very 1st ed 'gritty style'.

Green Griff..

The time in my youth that I got to meet Mr. Gygax (around 1988), I asked him the story behind this. He told me that they [TSR] had received an oral "okay" from people that they knew over at Chaosium, but later (after finding out about this) the "higher ups" at Chaosium said no... Hence the removal...

He could have just been blowing smoke up my bottom, but that is the story (in a nut-shell) that he told me...

-Your players find a sword +1, not a +1 sword.
-optimization means adding a kit.
-don't automatically assume a player has any sort of equipment on him unless (s)he explicitly states that (s)he is buying it (and I better see you subtract the gp from that sheet dang it!!!)
