4 people marked this as a favorite. |
I said usual threads...there are exceptions but things generally go down like this:
OP posts something relevant to him/her, either a thing that confuses them or a thing that worries them for some reason.
Somebody posts that he hopes that this is not an attempt at trolling, and maybe whines about the topic already being covered somwhere. Then the poster answers with a constructive remark.
Several other posters quip in with their 2 cents, of generally useful material.
Somebody mentions 4th edition in a derogatory way.
Scott Betts jumps in to defend it.
Somebody questions the superiority of a spellcasting class.
Professor Cirno jumps in to argue the point.
Somebody third says something completely off-topic.
Everybody jumps on that subject.
TriOmegaZero says that he is amused and drops a witty remark, maybe even a comment on the subject if he is amused enough, or if the subject has some relevance to him.
Gorbacz agreez with TOZ and also comments on the subject.
The thread is back on track for several posts.
Somebody answers on the off-topic matter.
Somebody insults 4th edition again.
Scott Betts comes in again, to defent the honor of 4th edition.
TriOmegaZero makes popcorn, Gorbacz joins him.
KaeYoss comes in to give a constructive remark and to annoy SB.
Thread slowly devolves into a editon-war, flame-war offtopic.
Tired of deleting insulting posts and asking people to stay on topic, Liz or someone else closes the topic and sends warnings to offenders.
What say you?

I actually haven't seen many 4th Edition wars the last months, perhaps because of all the "is X evil?" (and nobody even asked if 4E was evil, funny enough)
there are 5-6 "wars" that happen quite often, 4E is one of them, but by far not the worst.
All in all people aren't so bad, except some fanatics, and some that don't quit, the letter being often the usual suspects, the first are often never seen again.
Anyhow, I enjoy some witty remarks and I think that Paizo staff is quite restrictive on the boards, for better or for worse. Anyhow I'm fine with the board as it is, and what it brings to the books.

I'd really like one day to LT and Cirno have a go at each other. Man, that would be epic.

While you do have a point, you have to admit that the Sorcerer is really just a gimped Wizard.
I strongly disagree with this. Sorcerer and wizards pick from the same spell list, so there is no reason to say that a sorcerer can't pick exclusively battlefield control spells or buffing. He is never going to know as many spells as the wizard, but the wizard is never going to be able to cast as often as the sorcerer (though the wizard will be scribing scrolls, which the typical sorcerer will not). Likewise, you can make a wizard who focuses on blasting the first thing that moves in a dungeon and continues blasting until it is dead.
Knowing fewer spells certainly adds less versatility to your spellcasting ability and so many people who play sorcerers just focus on filling the niche of the blaster. I frequently make use of the advanced favored class bonus from the APG for humans to help add versatility to my spell list. The sorcerer also gets a number of bloodline powers and bonus spells (many of which duplicate the effects of a spell), while the wizard will only get a couple of powers from his school.
I will stop rambling now and just say that in short just because class X fills a certain niche does not automatically disqualify class Y from filling the same niche and vice versa.

The framework proposed by the OP covers about 30% of the topics. The others seem to equally divided between the rule questions of Ravingdork (can I do this? is this RAW, RAI, RAT? I want to hear a developer!) and people who ask proper stuff (mostly - I'm annoyed by those who start with "is it true this works that way?" and end with "oh thanks, BTW I hadn't really read the rules").

There's also a fair share of:
"I want to make a character that does X. How should I do it?"
"X sucks. Make a character that does Y instead."
And don't forget it evil spawn "Well the rules say you can't till level 7ish but here is a un-play tested home brew feat that I can't talk anyone into letting me take. It lets you do it at first level as much as you want. I'm now going to try and drag the thread into a discussion of said feat thanks guys!"
