The Antipaladin

Advice

I have seen literally zero discussion on this guy. I don't know if it's because he apparently sucks or if he's just too similar to the paladin or if it's because some GM's disallow Chaotic Evil characters. Regardless, I'm curious.

How is he? Would he make for a good "dark ranger" build, pumping up his stealth, using a bow and maybe dipping into rogue for some sneak attack?

The antipaladin makes an excellent villain; great saving throws, good HD, full BAB, and a smattering of mildly useful special abilities and spells. I don't think there is a whole lot of discussion about it because it is generally an easily understood class that isn't quite as strong as a paladin itself for players. They lose the ability to heal themselves as a swift action and smite good will come up for a PC far less often than smite evil will in most cases. Many GMs who bother using alignment restrict PCs from playing evil alignments.

I don't think it's the alignment issue as much as the lack of available options and the stunted spell list. The chaotic evil requirement is just icing on the cake for many GMs.

I've had a player use an antipaladin with no problems, but the campaign was unusual in that the players were villains. I'm not talking about antiheroic-amoral-dark-misanthropes-who-eventually-save-the-day; those kids were rival NPCs. The players rode (sailed in this case) into town, set up camp, recruited minions, and plotted ways to overtake the city.

Against that sort of approach, the antipaladin works fine as the lead psychopath. Just keep in mind that the classes abilities are primarily offensive vs. the standard paladin's defensive perks and a ranged build complements this nicely.

I've rarely seen PbP games allow evil so it is a major reason. Plus, not many archetypes fit it.

I was going to throw one into a game when I realized there were no archetypes for them. So I figured I'd just make evil versions of an existing one. But then Ultimate Combat came out and there's an undead themed antipaladin archetype.

Oh, do I want those books to arrive at the local store...

Oooh, good news, maybe there is hope for more stuff for the Synthesist.
