Fantasy Flight Games - The Future of the Star Wars RPG?

Other RPGs

Nice to see some action on the Star Wars front in the game industry. FFG hasn't made any official announcements about a Star Wars rpg line, but they are going to be making a new board game and a new card game.

Anyone have any thoughts or feelings about what FFG might be planning for the RPG? Or maybe they'll just keep the rpg license tied up and have no plans to provide a new RPG?

I could see them going the WFRP 3rd edition route and make a new RPG game that is component driven versus yet another "traditional" RPG simply because they won't lure away WEG or WotC Star Wars rpg'ers very well with a d100 system such as they use for their 40k games.

Then again, I am part of the super minority that actually gets a pretty big kick out of WFRP 3e (as well as continued love for Hogshead and Green Ronin versions of the game). So if Star Wars goes that route I'll probably bite (whilst continuing to play Star Wars as it was intended...d6 :-).

I'd prefer they didn't, to be honest; while I have no problem with the system itself, I don't like the distribution method. The main box costs around $100-$120 here in the UK, compared with around $60 for a rule book. Also, in my FLGS, the shop keeper allows us to have a look through books to decide what we like the look of before we buy; the box set model doesn't allow for this, meaning that in order to have a look at a new system, someone who doesn't know anyone who already owns the game must purchase blind.

Having said that, if they released a core book a little later, same as the core WFRP book that got released a few months after the box, I'd probably consider giving it a look; otherwise it'd be a massive waste of money for me, much as WFRP 3e was. The system they use for the 40k games could work quite well, actually, as all they'd really need to do is add the force, redo the classes and tweak combat so that it's more survivable.

Well, I'd probably buy it...but I'd rather not! :)

I have pretty much all of the Saga stuff and have enjoyed running that system and my game group has most of the WEG stuff if we ever want to go retro.

I love FFG's work (despite some doozy editing issues from time to time). It's very luxe...but also very expensive. I have purchased the Dark Heresy and Rogue Trader rulebooks and some supplements but simply can't afford to pick up everything I'd like to have from them. The pricing has kept me away from WFRP.

BTW, I also have a few FFG board games (Tannhauser, Tide of Iron, maybe something else I can't remember) and they are pretty sweet as well.

I hope they take the best of the abstract elements of WFRP3 (I'm thinking distance rules in particular) and merged them with the kind of 'do anything in a round' cinematic rules of d6 we'd have a winner.

Having said that though, I'm not terribly keen on this being another box set to box set RPG.

I'm with a lot of other Star Wars hopefuls - the d6 WEG system was a work of art, and with a few tweaks in the late game could really shine if someone decided to revamp it. Who knows, with Open D6 anything is possible.

The Exchange

Considering how much I enjoy the 40k RPG line, I would LOVE for them to start publishing a new Star Wars RPG. And while I would certainly buy a book, I don't know if I'd buy a box set...

If FFG is indeed getting the license to produce Star Wars RPGs, and just has been quiet about it so far, I would be surprised if we don't hear some announcement about it coming out of Gen Con this weekend.

I believe FFG is one of the premier hobby game companies and are up there with Paizo, WotC, Green Ronin and Kenzer in my book for being able to achieve the physical quality necessary for a Star Wars game line. Not that I'm in dire need of a new Star Wars RPG at this point. I have all the WotC Saga Edition books and most of the earlier WEG D6 and WotC D20 supplements. But I'm sure I'll end up picking the new game up as a huge Star Wars and RPG fan. I just hope whatever is produced has top production quality. Also, I would very much favor adventure production over rules expansions or general setting/era information.

From a sales perspective, I wonder if a boxed set approach might work better allowing for the inclusion of everything you need to play the game, maybe making it more appealing for mass market sales. If rules, dice, characters, a GM screen, a few adventures, etc. were all in one box that would be cool. The trick will be in balancing what would appeal to the new player/beginner set/game in a box type customer with a die hard, experienced RPG player, give it all to me type customer. I'd love to see a huge box with plenty of adventures, sample characters, dice, poster maps, maybe tiles/tokens/minis if the system uses them, a monster/NPC books, a starship guide, etc. It wouldn't bother me if the box had a price tag over $75 if it contained everything I want to play. But I can see where that price point just doesn't work for a lot of new players or parents buying their kid a game they don't even know if they'll keep playing.

Jon Brazer Enterprises

They did announce a Star Wars RPG. They just haven't released any details other than it is coming. Link

These two exciting titles are only the beginning, and we’ll be announcing additional Star Wars card, roleplaying, and miniatures games in the coming months!

emphasis mine.

If they do a RPG I hope its a very similar system to the 40k Rpgs they have
