Magical cosmetic surgery

I have a player in my group whose character ended up getting Reincarnated a few weeks ago. The original character was a female Shoanti Human; the new body is a male Chelaxian Human. (S)he is a 9th-level Monk.

Is there any way for her to get her "original" body back? It doesn't have to be the actual original body; I'm looking more for some "magic cosmetic surgery." Polymorph Any Object would do the trick, but that's an 8th level spell, and thus very difficult to get access to.

My first thought was a Permanent Alter Self, but that won't work because Alter Self is Personal, and also isn't on the Permanency table. Do any of you have any other ideas?

Commissioning a Wizard to research a new spell is also a possibility. If she were to go that route, what level spell would be appropriate for permanently changing another's appearance?

Polymorph any object. It's permanent not Instant, which means its dispellable, but it's the closest thing I can think of.

Also see if you can "rent" a girdle of masculinity/feminity for a round. ;-)

Sovereign Court

A Wish or a Miracle spell can restore a reincarnated character to his or her original form according to Reincarnate. As the Tiny Coffee Golem said a cursed girdle of masculinity/femininity would at least make him a female chelaxian. A hat of Disguise would at least give them a female seeming appearance. Then you've got the Flesh to Stone > Stone Shape > Stone to Flesh chain, but that's pretty dangerous to do.

Though the question must be asked why gender was changed given that Reincarnate doesn't mention anything about changing the gender of a character, just the race.

Ha! I can just see the haggling on that one. "You want to rent what?" Next thing, you'll be saying they should go looking for the Tomb of Horrors ;-)

I hadn't considered Flesh to Stone, but that's an interesting idea. Not sure she'd want to go for that one, though.

Reincarnate changing sex is a house rule in our group (50% chance for either). And it actually made for some very fun roleplay when she came back. The player was fine with it at the time, but now she's ready to get back to normal.

Sovereign Court

That would honestly make a really decent adventure hook. Make some magical something that restores the user to a most natural state and then have some force going out to get it and you've got to not only stop them but get it yourself.

Maybe an evil dragon or wizard was baneful polymorphed into a bunny rabbit and a cult now sprung up to get them returned to normal, etc.

Keep killing her off and ghetto rez her/him until she finds a suitable form. :-P

(Out of curiosity, if he/she did actually die again and got a true resurrection. Would he/she come back in her original form or his reincarnated form.)

My advice. Get used to the current form. Besides, I don't think too many people would be surprised to see a cross-dressing Chelaxian.

Wish can do it! :P

But that's even more extreme than PAO and more costly, too.

What you want is something instantaneous rather than permanent, as permanent can be dispelled, antimagicked, etc.

How's this?

Cosmetic Alteration, Lesser
School transmutation (polymorph); Level sorcerer/wizard 3
Casting Time10 minutes
Components V, S, M (A clay sculpture and gemstones worth 500 gp)
Range touch
Target living creature touched
Duration instantaneous
Saving Throw Will negates (harmless); Spell Resistance yes (harmless)

This spell alters the superficial features of the target. The effect of the alteration is instantaneous and is nonmagical once applied. It can change body weight and proportions, alter facial features, markings and colouration of skin, hair and eyes as well as hair length and style. Apparent age can be altered up to 20% younger or older than the creature's actual age. It cannot change the target's race and any changes applied cannot be abnormal for that race. A change cannot be made that would harm or impair the creature. If the creature has any physical features from class features or sources other than race, those features cannot be removed in this way.

A creature subject to this spell must be conscious while it is being cast or the spell fails. During the casting time, the caster creates a temporary change to the target's body. At the end of the casting time, the target must choose to accept the changes, the spell then completing successfully, or reject them, in which case the creature reverts to its normal appearance.

Cosmetic Alteration
School transmutation (polymorph); Level sorcerer/wizard 5
Components V, S, M (a clay sculpture and gemstones worth 2,500 gp)

As Cosmetic Alteration, Lesser, except it can also change the target's gender. It cannot change a creature to a gender not normal for its race. This spell cannot be cast on a woman that is currently pregnant.

This spell can also allow the subject to, during casting, will forth any appearance it has had before so long as that appearance is within the capabilities of the spell, even if the caster is unaware of that appearance.

Cosmetic Alteration, Greater
School transmutation (polymorph); Level sorcerer/wizard 7
Components V, S, M (a clay sculpture and gemstones worth 5,000 gp)

As Cosmetic Alteration, except it allows unnatural features to be granted that are not normal for the creature's race, such as pointed ears, small horns, unusual colours and patterns of skin, eyes and hair. It cannot make any change that would alter the creature's abilities, nor can it grant additional powers. Its effects are extraordinary and unnatural but are still purely cosmetic. It can be used to disguise a creature as a member of another race of the same creature type (e.g. human and elf) but does not grant any of the abilities of that race.

Your problem is that you're asking for something that takes magic on the level of Wish or Miracle to grant. There's no real substitute for it.

Is the hair at least ginger?

looking for a scroll or caster of wish could be a great plot device in and of itself

The reincarnated one... that's the "true" form now.

This reminds me to finish writing up the homebrew Eumycotian PC race ("Skindancers") and chestnut mold (russet mold variant).
