New PFS GM, Should I have the characters pay cost of living between adventures?

GM Discussion

I have tried searching here and through the rules, but I can't find anything addressing characters paying for their cost of living upkeep during the time between adventures. Do they need to pay for rent, food, etc... until their next society gig (after all , the Grand Lodge in Absalom sounds like it has really poor accommodations and discourages freeloaders)?

No, there is no cost of living between scenarios (or in the campaign as a whole).

Woo hoo! Golarion Girls Gone Wild! Vacation townhouse!!!

incidentally i did like the old LG option where you could pay more money, and get diplomacy bonuses b/c of your lifestyle.

Check out the new Field Guide...there's ways to buy nice homes that grants bonuses in your home city to skills.

So officially, there is nothing in the rules that states that they are required to pay dues. But of course, if you wish them to, you may. Of course you must make sure they pay regularly and it is at the GM's discretion. Most GM's don't really bother with it. But if you have society members, who wish to have a home of their own, or use it as a safe house/hostel style for PC's, there's nothing in the rules saying that it is not impossible. They would just have to pay the upkeep.

But again, as is most things in RPG's, it's at the GM's discretion.

For Society members in a home game, yes.

For Pathfinder Society Organized Play, there is no cost of living charge.

There is also an "Official" means for PFS character to get "Homes", it is the "Vanities" system in Pathfinder Society Field Guide

Sorry to disagree with you, but such a thing would mostly likely be against the rules in PFS play. A GM levying taxes and cost of living against players would really not go over well. Home games would be absolutely fine for this, and probably go a long way toward instilling realism. In PFS, however, a GM would probably be reported for just taking money from players.

Absolutely not. I don't mean to sound harsh, but PFS is very different from home games. GMs may NOT add or change things. GMs have to adjudicate unclear rules/situations and deal with any player issues, etc. But adding new, made-up stuff that's not from the rules (or for that matter, removing/vetoing stuff that IS allowed in the rules) is absolutely forbidden.

Think about it: players might be under 50 different GMs over the course of their PC's career. Having one GM make you pay for extra stuff puts that character at a disadvantage compared to the thousands of players who had no such fees. Letting a player do/have something they shouldn't conversely gives them an advantage over everyone else. Furthermore, if a GM has reason to audit a player's chronicle sheets and finds stuff you allowed that's not supposed to be there, the player might even get accused of cheating.

On the other hand, maybe you didn't know you were in a PFS thread when you wrote that? :P
