Hound Master Cavalier

Pathfinder First Edition General Discussion

Hey all,

I remember at one point someone created a Cavalier archetype called the Hound Master. Can anyone point me to it?

Thanks all!

That looks familiar.

Seems more like a "wolf master" to me. Why wolf rather than dog? Thematically it seems wrong for many civilized cavaliers to use wolves rather than dogs, so is it just for the crunch? If so, I like it much less.

A riding dog's CR is too high to be a standard animal companion. A normal dog is too weak. The wolfs stats are right in between and also have the useful trip ability, if you've ever seen a trained police dog in action they often tear their targets to the ground. A war hound is a special breed of dog, more powerful than your usual animal, but not as powerful as the huge mastiffs used as mounts. It merely has the same stats as a wolf.

All game design must be made with consideration to both fluff and crunch. Having accurate crunch is a very big part of the Superstar as well.

If the wolf ere not allowed to go to large at 7th I wold be ok with it.

also, a police dog its better done with grab than trip.

The wolfs trip attack was built to simulate the exact way any canine would attack another creature in earnest. This is nearly perfect to simulate the experience of it, I loved the archetype, that's what I voted for it. I have a player in my game who also loved the flask of 5ths, his oracle is in the middle of building one now actually.

Yes! Some love for the flask! Probably my favorite entry.

Link seems to be broken now.

We had a guy run one of these in our Carrion Crown campaign. He died. We'll miss his hounds. (Nothing against the archetype, just very uneven dice rolling on the part of the player. His hounds were dynamite. He stunk on ice.)
