Well, you raise a good point, but that doesn't change the fact that under the terms of the OGL license, 3PP products aren't allowed to directly refer to non-Open products. Golarion and the adventure paths aren't Open, from what I understand, so we are not permitted to refer to places, characters, or other objects belonging to said materials. Doing so would be a violation and could be actionable.

It's easy to say "everything should be open", but that's just not how things work.

Yup, it's using things that aren't yours to promote your product... that's a no no.

ex: our new straws make drinking Pepsi, Coke and even RC easier and more fun to drink!

or

ex: our new straws make drinking your favorite cola beverages easier and more fun to drink!

So you're walking through the store and need straws... are you gonna buy the ones with the name Pepsi on it or the one without it if they cost the same.

I realize that not everything is open, obviously. I also realize you can't "just do it". My point is that if Paizo allowed LG to use some IP content for the AP plug ins I think it would benefit everybody, Paizo, LG, and the consumers. I don't know how it hurts anyone. I feel the publishers tend to be overly protective of the IP and should loosen up a bit.

Of course you don't want to make all of Golarian open but how does it hurt to selectively take some deliberate loose ends and allow LG to develop them in the plug ins? In fact when I first saw the "Adventure Path Plugins" on the LG site I thought this was exactly what Paizo had done especially with the way Clark has been praising them lately.

If you, your company and your IP are having a head-on battle against the 800lb gorilla industry-maybe-still-leader, you don't take chances.

Paizo already has been insanely generous with their IP, not shutting down Pathfinder Wiki or allowing Wayfinder to thrive.

But it's Paizo's call, not my call. And I am OK with that. Would I prefer to use all their IP? Sure! But that's not up to me and I certainly don't fault them for it. It's how the OGL and d20STL and now Pathfinder license all work. We are all used to it. Most prior 3Ps tried to create their own IP, we are in the unique position of specifically trying to be compatible with their IP, so you perhaps see it more with our particular business model.

Clark,

I realize there isn't any sort of official release date for anything, but do you have any sort of idea what kind of time frame we will start to see the products coming to market?

They sound like a really great fit for my groups style and I would love to include them when I run Carrion Crown. I am estimating a couple months before we finish our current campaign and I'm ready to start it, so I am hoping we will see them by GenCon since that is likely when I'll be needing them.

I'm 100% clear and comfortable with what's been discussed and explained. My sole and only input is that it should be... trivial... for a concrete reference to be engineered when it comes time to find and buy materials. If I'm interested in buying some ancillary materials for my DM to use in an upcoming AP, I need to be able to make sure I'm buying the right stuff. Ideally without having to read a bunch of spoilers. That was why I suggested numbers. DM's response was fine and I accept it (while [respectfully] disagreeing with it) and I'm just posting now to make sure the context of what I was suggesting is clear.

I get it that the material is both generic and specific. Great. But that specificity has value to me. The day that there are two, three, or fifteen gothic-themed APs, it will be much less obvious which one the LG* products belong to, I'd think.

* Seriously? Legendary Games... LG... Lawful Good? A company run by Orcus. I think I just stumbled on an Easter Egg and it's a stinker!

What Clark said. If y'all want specific callouts to Golarion, tell Paizo to make them available to 3PPs or, better yet, into the OGL.

Best guess is that the first products should be available well before GenCon if all goes as expected.

Hopefully sooner. We dont want to rush, we dont have to rush. I want this done right and it will be.

Listen, I'm excited too :)

Actually, I have a dual personality. As Bill will tell you, sometimes I'm a paladin. So the LG works. And since I also do Necromancer Games, which would be NG, the shift to LG is really just one small shift away :)

Well we are on Paizos message boards in the Paizo 3PP forum talking about plug ins to Paizos products so I'm pretty sure that this whole thread is already "telling Paizo".

Liberty's Edge

Thanks for the update on the scheduling you two, I suppose the timing is a lot easier when you don't need to factor printer and shipment times into things.

I'm really looking forward to these products so I'll be keeping an eye on things here for sure.

Paizonians!

Come meet up with some of the team members from the Legendary Games Design Team at PaizoCon.

Neil and Jason are there now. I'll be there Friday about noon.

The Con is a blast!

Having a great time meeting all the Paizo fans. What an amazing, dedicated, passionate group of people. It is awesome.
