With all of the Lovecraftian goodness floating around, has anyone ever converted X2 to PF?

Only second edition Champions, I'm afraid.

Huge fan of X2 and Aborgiene... curious what it has to do with the Lovecraftian goodness? Have I missed something in the module?

I don't think it would take to much to use it as is with some HP adjustments, some spells and Armour class

Clark Ashton Smith was a contemporary and friend of H.P. Lovecraft, I guess.

I have some notes on Averoigne for a historical PF game. While very incomplete, I can share the hex map -- based on a real 18th century map of Auvergne.

I would replace much of the Limagne region with Averoigne.

CAS created Tsathoggua (and his formless spawn), the spider god Atlach-Nacha, Ubbo-Sathla, Qachil Utthaus, Mordiggian, the Book of Eibon, and many others. He also used the serpent-folk a lot (almost as much as Howard).

See fansite here.

Also, given the nature of the scenario intro, and the specialised victory conditions, I consider X2 to be a prototype Ravenloft adventure.

Reading about Chateau Douleurs in Rule of Fear strongly suggests both Amber scenarios as being set there or inspiring it at the very least.

One of my all time favorites!! Fair amount of Poe influence as well. Maybe I'll have to dig them out and take a look at converting them...

The Exchange

As its a Mystaran Setting D&D, you might find one on the Vaults of Pandius.

I response to the OP: I did for 3.5. Close enough for you?

Yes. Converting 3.5 to PF is easy enough. Any chance of sharing that with us? Please...

This sounds like fun.
I remember running this when I was 10.
You got my email.

Mrs Snorter recently got into Lovecraft and his circle (apart from August Derleth, who she says is crap). After being told for years that HPL was an awful writer, she read an excerpt of 'The Horror from Red Hook' in the description of some art, and found it awesome.
I got the books out the attic for her this weekend, as she prefers that to reading onscreen.
She's known of CAS for a long time, having read 'Rendezvous in Averoigne' in a horror compilation.

'The Beast of Averoigne' and 'The Colossus of Ylourgne' are two stories referenced in the adventure.

I remember running it in the twilight years of 2e. using Ravenloft rules for Averoigne Somewwhere I found a PDF of CAS's Averoign works, I don't know if it was legal or not.

I'd be interested, too!

Heck, I'd love a copy too! I remember running that module rather fondly.

I'd love a copy if youre sending them:

Thanks

Lemme see if I can dig it out tonight and email the people who posted their addys. Note: I'd orginally made a high-level version using the Epic Level Handbook colossus for Ylourgne, with the ghost of the epic-level necromancer possessing it (like in the story), but the rest of it got so far out of whack that I abandoned that avenue and instead tried to balance everything around a mid-level party.

If you find it, you can send it to hogarthstuff@live.ca. (And thank goodness it's not epic-level stuff...)

Funny Player knowlege story about that.

Spoiler:
One player I ran it for knew the module so his plan was to fireball the basket on the back, to destroy the magic jar. He didn't know I'd read the original story. So he cuts tells all the casters to open up on the basket, killing all the apprentices. I let the Colossus fall, he was feeling all proud...

Then the Colossus flicked his mage, doing like 50 points of damage. :-)

OK, file sent to everyone who provided their email.
Bear in mind it's a pretty straightforward conversion, so a lot of it is insanely goofy, and like all earlier edition modules, it's incredibly encounter-heavy.

Could I prevail upon you for a copy as well?

And I was hoping that this is about Roger Zelaznys "Princes of Amber".

MicMan wrote:

Sorry, no -- instead this story is about a family of powerful individuals who live in the mysterious Castle Amber and who are always scheming against each other. No relation. ;-)

MicMan wrote:

I knew Castle Amber was based off a book(s) but I didn't know who the Author was. About 6 months ago I saw a book called The Chronicles of Amber thinking it was the same as Castle Amber I bought it.

I wasn't disappointed Zelanznys stories are great but I am still looking for Clark Ashton Smiths books.... :-)

Well, that file was a hoot.
I'd forgotten how crazy this was.

Yeah, did I mention that I don't recommend actually trying to run this as an actual adventure?

For the most part, adventure writers have actually learned a lot in the last 30 years.

I'm game.

There is something fun to the adventure. With a little tweaking, it IS playable. It's the monster stats that worried me (too many Level 10+ NPCs in a module originally meant for PC levels 3-6)

I'm going to tweak it a little and run it for one of my groups...

Silver Crusade

I'd love a copy too--for nostalgia's sake--if it's not too late to ask.

Any chance one of the guys to get this can send a copy to taiwanmissionman 'at' hotmail.com ?

Per the XP tracker spreadsheet, the conversion spans levels 6-11. Level 10+ NPCs are therefore not outrageous.

Additionally, bear in mind the fact that, in the original adventure, the PCs aren't supposed to be able to fight with most of the d'Ambrevilles -- they're supposed to placate them and/or run from them.

I would love a copy to if you are still sending them out moonglums@hotmail.com
thanks

That's what I meant, the original game was a little overpowered for the players (we did it at level back in the day and it was BRUTAL).

I have many fond memories of these two modules, and ask also if I may have a copy of your work. Thank you in advance

just another repeat of a request to send to taiwanmissionman at hotmail.com - thanx.

I haven't received a copy - or a request for any of the lucky ones who DID get a copy, to send one my way.

Yes, I stopped sending after the first round because I didn't want to have to do a new mailing every day as more people keep asking. Wait a bit, and when it seems like everyone who wants a copy has asked, then I'll do a second (and final) mailing.

Kirth,

When you do your mass mailing, can you send a copy to The_Livewire at bigfoot dot com?

Thank you for your labours.

Seems there's a lot of regard for this one out there, despite the goofiness (I DMed it a couple of times back in the day, and had a blast. Not sure about the players).

I'd love the conversion too, if it's not too much trouble, to colin dot fisher1 at gmail dot com. Thanks!

Was going to send it last night, decided to wait, and am glad I did -- looks like there are more takers. Hopefully this weekend I'll do the final mailing.

Be warned:
(a) This was a goofy adventure when it was published, and it's not any less goofy in 3.5 edition (as I mentioned upthread, I wouldn't necessarily advise actually trying to run it);
(b) Remember that 3.5 edition uses lightning-fast leveling, so you go from 6th to 11th in the space of a single adventure (I'll send out the xp progression and level tracking chart with the adventure);
(c) What I've got really isn't that exciting -- the monsters have 3.5 ed. stat blocks, and some encounters were smoothed out a bit, but it's mostly a straightforward conversion with little attempt made to make it more playable.

Final mailing sent to the rest of the people here -- if anyone else wants a copy hereafter, please contact one of the earlier recipients.

Thanks!
