Carrion Crown

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Tonight we are going to start our first Pathfinder game, playing through the Carrion Crown.

Live stream for session one 5/26/2011 @ 6:30EST - http://www.justin.tv/absuguild

Feel free to join us for our live stream and watch, kibitz or rules lawyer us.

I'm really looking forward to GMing this AP. I've done a bit of prep (which I will share in a later post), including some cloth maps, aged handouts. I've borrowed alot of ideas from a few of the campaign notes posted (thanks guys!).

I'll post more later, after the session.

How long will it stay up for and is there any chance of a downloadable audio file for these eps?

Pathfinder Adventure Path, Lost Omens Subscriber

Hey watching it now and it should definitely be helpful for people like myself who are planning on running the adventure path. Anyway I was wondering, the dm said he had a lot of material prepared and I was wondering if it would be possible for someone to maybe post it up? Im currently trying to come up with my own material to help me run the game so I would be very thankful for these :)

Another EP going up?

Hey thats great, but the first episode seems to have disappeared. Any chance your able to put it back up? I only managed to watch half of it yesterday and I was also hoping to re watch it in preparation to my own game which im starting in 2 weeks.

I regularly look at this site to see if anything new has been uploaded. Now it's been a while, and I wonder, if you plan on continuing the videos?

Session 1 recap:
The players find themselves together on a slow carriage. Each summoned by a letter from Kendra Lorrimor requesting their presence and assistance with her father’s) funeral.

They arrive on an early fall day. The town greets them with suspicion and a general distrust. Two servants in the employ of the Lorimoor’s assist the party with their belongings. Kendra informs them of her father’s untimely demise. Player introductions are made:

Melrick – A Human Paladin (Ben)
Althalas – a Half-elven rogue (who hides his race) (Jon)
Korgoth – a half-orc barbarian (Jared)
Marduc Raz – a half-orc alchemist

Shortly after conversation and introductions, the party travels through town with the funeral precession to The Restlands(the entire time drawing ire from the community, more so due to presence of two half-orcs).

After arriving at The Restlands, the party is joined by several of the professor’s friends. Following the precession down the Dreamwake, the party encounters a group of thugs, led by an irate Gibs Hephenus. The thugs express their displeasure in having a “necromancer” buried in the same place as their kin. Benjan Caeller tries to calm the mob down, unsuccessfully]] The party manages (via role-playing and and various skills) to talk the thugs out of a bloody confrontation, at which point Gibs sulks back to town.

After avoiding the confrontation, the party meets Father Vauran Grimburrow and the two grave diggers. The Father gives a sermon, and the party has an opportunity to each give a eulogy and some words at the burial.

After returning to the Lorimoor estate, the will is read by Councilman Hearthmount in the presence of the Sheriff. The party discovers several books in a chest and are requested to stay in town for 30 days to assist Kendra after which they are to deliver several books to an associate of the professor.

Marduk immediately begins researching one of the books, the professor’s journal, and the other players retire for the evening.

Hi guys, yes we are planning on more videos. We will be streaming tomorrow as well (probably around 6:30-7:00 EST). So to answer a few questions, I'll be happy to share all of my materials. I'll upload some to our site. Thanks for he interest guys!

We are tracking our campaign on Obsidian portal (which seems to be working great so far):

http://www.obsidianportal.com/campaign/carrion-crown-ct

I've also made a page with some of the materials I've made:
http://absuguild.org/2011/06/20/materials-for-carrion-crown-module-1/

This above link has some more info and direct downloads to some of the handouts.

I printed copies of the sermon I gave (as father grimburrow) on paper, then I "aged" them with tea/coffee, frayed the edges and baked them in the oven for around 20-25 minutes. I then rolled the paper and tied with string.

For maps, I printed out Ravengro and Ustalav on cloth (If anyone remembers when Ultima came with cloth maps, this is what I was going for). They turned out fantastic. Easily the best prop I have ever made.

For the professor's journal entries, I did the same thing, however, I only handed those out to Will (since his character discovered the journal, did the ol' switchero from the other PCs, and bothered to intensely research the book. He revealed the information (mostly) to the party. We passed index cards back and forth for private communication.

I plan to come up with some gauge for the overall trust. I haven't figured out what I'm going to do, but I think this will link with a calendar of sorts.

I purchased Freezer paper from the store, cut out 8.5x11 sheets and then ironed some white fabric I cut form an IKEA pillow case to the shiny side of the freezer paper. After the paper cooled, I fed them into my Dell 3100CN printer and printed from a photo application with the margins slightly in (about 3/4"). After it printed, I removed the cloth from the freezer paper and Wala! Perfect cloth map.

For music, I started on composing a basic theme using a violin/cello section. Unfortunately, I lost track of time and have not yet went back to finish the theme. If I do, I'll post an mp3 for people to use. In lieu of my own music, I am using selections from Kronos Quartet's discography. It evokes the theme/feel I am going for. In particular several pieces from the Requiem for a Dream soundtrack. Lux Aeterna serves as our intro piece: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mQHYDXpfuHM

Combat is also precipitated by the beginning of the end: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9D-jQFbYDIc

I have a playlist that I manage inside of Google's Music beta and I add a few other classical or soundtrack related pieces to this list during the day. Why google music?

Well, I'm trying to run the entire session from my Xoom Tablet. Google music streams remarkably well from my tablet. The xoom loads the justin.tv chat session (flash), I can search PDFs, and I can IM the one remote player we have. I'm still using pen and paper for my notes during the session as I ultimately prefer dice, pencils andpaper out in front of me. Initially I was using my Macbook Pro, but found it too distracting.

Ben, the Paladin, uses a small alienware laptop or his samsung galaxy tablet during the session.

Jon uses a Macbook Pro for monitoring the Justin.tv session and controlling the Zino and Skype machine. Will, is going to start using an iPad. Jared goes completely old school - pencil and paper only (this is his first true RPG experience).

I'm tracking initiative via some index cards that are folded over the screen.

We are running three cameras, two are multiplexed using a piece of software called xsplit. This shows an up close shot of the board and a wide shot of the room. Another computer runs a dedicated skype session to Greg, our remote player. There is a 26" TV on the wall that we use to show a full screen image of Greg during the game.

Apparently we missed a setting in Justin.tv that caused it to disappear. We'll try to remedy this for our game tomorrow.

So as I mentioned we have a remote player. He was brought in after the first session. We did some back and forth on email (handling character creation, selection, etc).

This is what I sent him to bring his character into the fold:

You received a letter from Kendra Lorrimor, the daughter of Professor Petros Lorrimor, your old employer and a well respected friend.

The letter informs you of his untimely demise, and she requests your presence for the reading of the will.

In a furious effort to gather your possessions and head to Ravengro, you missed the first carriage of the merchant caravan. You elected to ride with the slightly less comfortable, but equally accommodating cargo wagon.

You arrive in Ravengro near dusk. The townsfolk cast a suspicious eye on you and do not rush to greet you, in fact, you notice they keep a healthy distance from you. A Mothers pull her child into her breast; A Father growls in a low voice at his son to move along and finish his chores. You sense not sorrow, but suspicion guides their actions. Perhaps they cared little for the Professor.

A man dressed in a deacon’s robe approaches you and says “Kendra mentioned more would be coming. Father Grimburrow is up at the Restlands… I suggest not interrupting the burial. You can watch from the road. Let me take you there.”

The deacon guides you through the streets. Watchful gazes pierce through drawn shutters. You feel as your every move is being observed, pondered and judged.

As you approach the cemetery, a wiry, older man rushes past you, knocking you in the shoulder.

He curses you under his breath and briefly stops.

The deacon steps between you and the old man, “Be gone with you Gibs Hephenus! Lest Pharasma brings her wrath on you!”

Gibs stops briefly, spits on the ground near your feet and quickly darts off.

“Gibs is an old farmer, I believe at one time, also the sheriff. He carries his anger like a stone in his belly.”
He pauses briefly. “Gibs was trying to convince people that the professor shouldn’t be laid in the restlands with Ravengro kin. He believes the professor practiced the dark rites; was a necromancer. Come we’ll miss Grimburrow’s sermon and I’ll be off to clean the steeple for a week.”

The deacon leads you around the winding trail, through a simple but old graveyard. In the distance, you see a small group of people, including two half-orcs and several humans, gathered around a grave. Father Grimburrow’s speech clearly finds you. (See the previous document of the Father’s sermon).

After the sermon, the precession walks slowly back to town.

The deacon leads you back to the Lorrimor house where you are greeted by Benjan Caeller, the towns’ sheriff.

“Sorry, no entrance permitted. Councilman Hearthmount is reading official business. The Professor recently passing and all.”

A short time later, a large man walks out of the house. He takes a look at you.

“You are late, however, the Professor made concessions, so will I. Benjan if you would be so kind, we must fetch Mistress Kendra before she retires. We still have business to attend to.”

The sheriff nods his head and beckons you to follow.

— You are greeted by a weary Kendra, she profusely thanks you for coming. "Not many of Father’s friends came… but thankfully, the important ones cared enough to make the journey.’

… Councilman Hearthmount reads the will (please see the previously attached document) … With his duty done, he excuses himself. Benjan nods.

“Please follow me, there are some friends I would like to introduce you to.”

….
"

I'm missing the session 2 follow up, however, I'll post it on the Obsidian portal page once we've written it down.

Technical issues:
JustinTV was down. We tried UStream, however, it didn’t save the session.

The start of the session found the adventurers in the Restlands, in a crypt after defeating several Giant Centipedes. Unnoticed, the party made their way back to town. The met Pevrin Elkarid at the The Posting Poles. Pervin informed the party that he posts town business on the poles and he would be willing to run errands for coin. They asked several townsfolk the whereabouts of Kendra Lorrimor.

Still suspicious, the party made their way to the Temple of Pharasma where they spoke with Father Vauran Grimburrow and his acolytes. They were permitted to use some of the resources in the temple to help them research Harrowstone. While the majority of the party researched in the books, Korgoth ventured off to the The Laughing Demon for some of the famed Corpse Chowder and to investigate the authenticity of the food and taste some ale.

While in the tavern, Korgoth found several musicians playing and dancing. Korgoth discovers that the food served by Zokar Elkarid is done in jest, and is simply mundane in nature. After considerable drink, the traveling minstrels convinced the half-orc to participate in a dance. The ritualistic dance enthralls many of the patrons, who join in, the music becomes louder.

As the dance comes nears coda, a group of Stirge burst in. With the aid of Zokar (armed with a large pan), Korgoth valiantly defends the patrons of the bar only to fall unconscious as the battle concludes. Pervin runs to find the rest of the party and summon Father Vauran Grimburrow to help heal the fallen barbarian and several direly wounded patrons.

Benjan Caeller arrives late to survey the aftermath and suggests the part return to the Lorrimor residence to let the Barbarian heal. After arriving the party continues their research and discuss some of their findings with the late Professor’s daughter.

The are awaken in the middle of the night to rustling, however, they do not find anything of importance.

In the morning Pervin rushes to awaken the party and inform them of something fantastic at the The Harrowstone Memorial. Upon arriving at the memorial they party discovers the letter V written in blood on the memorial. The search the area and discover that whoever vandalized the memorial was hiding their tracks and did not use the trail. They did not, however, find any additional clues.

After discussing their options, the party agrees that something is foul with Harrowstone and set off to the ruins.

Arriving at the ruins, the party discovers the decrepit house of the Warden, but determine that the collapsed roof and damage makes the structure too dangerous to explore. They set off to the explore the main entrance and discover a broken gargoyle head on the ground and several arcane runes etched upon the base of structure.

Marduc Raz searches the perimeter and discovers a set of stairs leading to a balcony. While the rest of the part is examining the runes and determining the option of using a grappling hook, Marduc sets off to explore the balcony and discovers the executions stone is not entirely unoccupied. The Headsman’s Scythe greets him, and a fit of fear, Marduc jumps off the balcony and sustains severe damage. The rest of the party rushes to his aid, only to find that Marduc is not there. They begin to fight the Scythe; Marduc quaffs a healing potion and rejoins the fight. While the party is severely damaged, they triumph.

End of session 3.

Ok, Greg's character is a summoner and we were discussing some of the issues with how long it takes to summon the eidolon. He suggested a feat that he can research. The feat would allow faster casting a limited number of times.

Here is his first pass

Quick Recall

Pre. Reqs.: Summoner Level 8

Quote:

As a result of your intense study and mastery of summoning your Eidolon you're able to now summon him quicker than most people can albeit a limited amount of times per day.

Twice per day you may summon your Eidolon as a full round action instead of the normal one minute ritual time. You may not use this in consecutive rounds.

We have been following a secondary path for research (out of game for this). Here is the GM only section for his character in the third session:

GM + Rut

The Professor’s library is vast. The grey wormwood book cases stretch from floor to ceiling. Each book case has a series of small brass plates carefully placed about its sturdy frame. Inset upon each plate, the soft glow of an arcane inscription presents the subject. The Professor was nothing if not thorough. The number of subjects present within the musty room is a dizzying journey into Professor Petros Lorrimor interests.

You find several books detailing the town’s history, property records, land division even a registry of prisoners housed in Harrowstone. The tomes are musty and littered with parchment scribbled with notes. Every available space in the room appears to be consumed by books or notes. Empty wells of ink scatter as you walk around the room.

Perusing through a shelf dedicated to the various races of Golarion, You find a set of unique books each stretched with a heavy, greyish-green leather that is vaguely translucent. Upon further inspection, you notice the faint tinge of blue ink, the rough outlines of facial features now pressed to the heavy padding the forms the books’ padded cover. You realize the five volume set, Gobelinus Anatomia – Volūmen I-V is bound in the flesh of a humanoid. Upon inspection, these books provide pages upon pages of detailed instructions detailing the anatomy of the goblinoid races.

The dissection of creatures is not unlike the act of creation. You are enthralled by the text. Each system connected in a manner that transcends the corporeal. You realize that there is an order… a presence to the construct that is life. And what is life? A form. There is a correlation to this. You realize that there is an efficiency to the physical manifestation of a being. Perhaps the arrangement of thought helps the formation of state… of presence. All creatures are built upon the order and absence of presence.

(Quick Recall 1 out of 8) -

Award: 200 XP.

------

The secondary research is a nice way to bring his character into the session. Since he is remote, it's a bit challenging to make him feel like he is part of the actual session. We're still working out the kinks right now, but so far so good.

Sorry, we've had a few glitches over the last few weeks. I only get 6 days to mark the files on Justin.tv to be saved. It looks like I didn't save episode 1 or 2. Last week justin.tv was down when we started so I quickly setup a Ustream account and broadcast to that, but when you use a third party application to stream to Ustream you don't get the option to save when you're done. So that recording is gone as well. Believe me, I'm frustrated too, from now on I plan on setting the streaming software to save a local copy of the stream as well so that we'll have something we can work with later.

Hi guys, were streaming live now. http://justin.tv/absuguild
