You're going to miss my birthday, DMHW, how disappointing ;)
I have no doubt that you will have a fabulous birthday!
Gonna bust out the buckskin and muzzleloader, Harp? Sounds like an awesome time.
Thanks, Bilbo! I'm thinking it will be great! Last year when I stayed at this lakeside cabin, I was paddling out on this lake in the early morning, I was checking out some strange branches sticking out of the water. When I got close, the branches came out and I realized that they were not branches at all, but antlers attached to a moose! What an awesome sight. Did you know that moose are really quite good at swimming?

All the fighter disdain I've seen around the boards lately mkes me want to play one to shut people up. And a Dervish of Dawn at that.
Anyway.
Is it possible for KArlan to get a bit of a respec? Recent events have kind of shown severe limitations in the method in which KArlan usually fights and I fear it's detrimental to the group.
So I was wondering if it was possible for me to change out certain choice I've made over the course of KArlan's career mainly to do with his choice of fighting style.
Mainly I jsut want to change out all the TWF and Shieldbashing stuff out for Power Attack, Combat Reflexes, Lunge and somethign else. The only other thing I want to change is switching the point out I put in dex to Con. What say you?

Looking at doing a Weird War game. If any of you have stories of family or friends who have served and would be so kind as to share them, please PM me. Some times those stories are not meant for all company and I would like to keep them that way. I am a Soldier and a student of military history, so no worries.

Wonder how Harp's vacation is going? That moose business was great stuff.
Hey Bilbo, Actually it begins tomorrow. But I am totally psyched because I just purchased kayaks for the whole family! I was trying mine out yesterday on a small pond nearby and they glided along the surface of the water with such ease. We saw great blue herons, loons and we even snuck up on turtles sunbathing on a log. I am going to have a great week! I leave first thing in the morning!
Zyren, please note my above post that I will be away. I am so glad that you enjoyed Venice. I have fond memories of that place. My wife and I, when we were poor backpackers, managed to get a free boat ride through the waterways to the Murano glass factory. I soon discovered why it was free. The tour was interesting, but this was really about them wanting me to purchase lots of glass. It felt like it was mafia run and the pressure to buy was huge. I was sure the guy in the suit hovering around us was named Guido. When we told him we could not afford anything in the show room, he looked disappointed but took us to the next show room that was just a little cheaper. Finally after meekly slipping through several of these show rooms, we snuck by a guard dog and ran out of the place trying to find a way off of the island. You see, the boat ride was only one way! That was an exciting time! However I always seemed to run into the temperamental merchant that would explode with anger if you didn't buy anything.
Karlan Bladetwist |
It's remarkably appropriate for Karlan. Though I want to hear what everyone else says, and especially the GM before taking it.

Primarily because the limitations on the cohort itself. He's restricted in classes he can take. Plus he's less powerful than a typical cohort unless he does a very specific thing.
It makes plenty of sense for KArlan to take since he's a knight and a leader of men (an officer in the town guard).
Storywise it requires surprisingly little retcon compared to karlans sudden shift in the way he hits things. HE could be a lot of things. Though it's really up to Zyren how he wants to ahndle it if he wants to handle it at all. I can write him up as an npc with the elite array and just make him a seargeant in the guard under Karlan. I seriously doubt he'll be taking any of these ogres one on one. As for where he came from? Sandpoint guard most likely. So he'd likely be written up as a career cop.
Heck I might just write him up for fun.

Yeah but you get your cohort nice and early, he's a martial at a level when martials edge out casters, and then at level 7 its the whole Leadership feat and the martial restriction no longer applies (Hey cool, you graduated, I'm go get a replacement) doesn't say the NEW squire has to have the foundation martial levels... :P
As it is, yeah he wont be fighting the Ogres one on one, that said neither are we :p
Good Feat, makes sense too.

I wanted to consult the Runes people before I select a few of Marek's spells. Up until now I've been building him purely as a damage dealer with some utility spells thrown in for good measure since the party doesn't have a wizard. I've noticed Celestra and Ailetha cover the buffing part really well (freeing up the haste slots I would certainly use), so I figured the group could use some controlling through debuffing (since it's one of the few other roles Marek could fill). Marek's routine would remain almost the same, just trading some pure touch spells for a couple debuffing touch spells. So should I keep Marek's focus on pure damage or branch out a bit on controlling? Please do not take the last battle in consideration - as the others I thought it was going to be a cakewalk and aimed to use as few resources as possible, so I didn't use any defensive buffs (blur, shield, mirror image, etc).
Shifty |
Yeah, I'm not taking that last battle as a sign - I'm not sure quite what to make of that fort, this was an 'easy' fight compared to what we would have got inside - and inside we equally wouldn't have had chances to buff prepare etc, as the fight would have kicked off at some random point we couldn't necessarily predict.
If just the lone gate guards are 115hp hard hitting fiends that are 1:1 as good or better than our tanks I think we really must have missed something here - the 'Leader' was even tougher...
But for one roll Harry would be dead outright there (one rounded), Thumper ended with 2hp, and Marek was taken out of the fight. A couple more ogres in the mix and I reckon we'd have been on for a TPK with everything working for us.
I suspect the Fort must be for our NEXT level and we have simply arrived too early - we're not geared up for enemies where the lowest is an Ogre with five fighter levels, their leaders must have seven or eight, and who knows what the Giant has.
So yeah, lets not worry about THAT fight :P
At best we could hope for is some kind of attrition where we pick off a gate guard here or there, but thats going to take a LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOONG time and at some point we still have to commit to an open battle against a prepared enemy (with the odds stacked against us).
Rune |
To DM Zyren: I left a feat slot unused on Marek's sheet since I couldn't find something interesting besides the regular feats (Toughness, Improved Initiative, etc). Then I stumbled into this one. I'm thinking it could represent fairly well Marek's singleminded focus to tear down the Graul clan and the ogres on the mountain; despite his larger goal, the feat would be focused on "the last of the Graul clan" or perhaps the chief of the ogre clans yet to appear in the main storyline (either on the fort or elsewhere, in the future).
Since it's a newish feat, I thought I should ask your opinion (and the party's) on the matter before taking it. So what do you guys think?
Shifty |
'The Grauls' as a collective are already departed...
And worse yet, you guys let go the stragglers of the family, so you can't have hated them that much, Harry was up for a full whitewash but the nice guys made friends instead :P
Might need a different enemy there, if there's some might chief dude then he must be enormous, so that could work :)
Shifty |
...so we talk to the mass murdering psycho, then take his word for it he will walk off into the sunset and not bother anyone? I don't see how willingness to talk (stemming from the enemy working out they can't win the battle) should allow them to white flag and walk off - especially mid battle. :p

Well none of the ones we let walk off were midbattle that I can recall. In fact we usually let ones walk off because we had specific reasons.
The smith we let go because no one wanted "child murderer" branded on their foreheads.
The mercs we let go (after stripping them down to their jimmies) because other than being at the wrong palce at the wrong time they didn't do anything necessarily wrong.
Who else did we let go?
Ah, the manticore. But KArlan didn't really participate in that. And I think mainly it was because it was better to have them killing/harassing the ogres than klling/harassing us.
TarkXT |
That reminds me. Since it seesm I likely will not be getting said cohort until level 9 anyway why don't I just take regular vanilla leadership then?
Seems silly to have a nerfed cohort if I have to wait anyway since part of the appeal of squire is getting it in the early levels. The flavor will remain the same, but this way I don't feel like I ahve to go to hillbilly town to get said cohort when I'm kind of hoping we'll return to sandpoint in the near future.
Heavy Harry |
We let the Graul guy go with the kids, frankly they should be cracking rocks somewhere or the like, not let free to go. I took the comment you ooc'd as karlan not hearing the surrender because harry just outright ganked the chap - not because karlan was selectively not hearing it for his own ends :p
