Ninja, quigong monk, double standard

Pathfinder First Edition General Discussion

Okay so i distinctly remember there being complaint that while the ninja was balanced it overshadowed its parent class the rogue, and while I found this a bad way to judge a class it's fair for some to think that way.

Now the new monk archtype comes out and everyone's singing praise that it "fixes" the monk. Where are all the "the monk is being overshadowed" threads??? What makes this upgrade okay but the ninja such an offense?

Just about every Monk can, thematically, be a Quigong Monk and grab the abilities in question. And can do so piecemeal, only replacing certain stuff. It also only adds new Ki-powers...a category of ability the Monk already possessed.

Ninja is vastly more restrictive, both mechanically and thematically. Not every Rogue can, or should, be a Ninja. Or, particularly, have to be a Ninja to remain competitive.

It's the difference between adding new spells to a spellcasting class and adding a spelcasting variant that gives up almost nothing to a non-spellcasting class.

The quigong gives up nothing to be a monk but gains everything, not every good monk should be a magic wielding one.

Same argument as ninjas and rogues but the ninja catches sh*t for doing it. (and not even as well!)

Some of the playtest threads had them being about even.

I'm fully aware I never agreed either. but obviously it was an argument for some that didn't seem to carry over to the monk, I fear the ninja has to face the ramifications for it

I think the general consensus is that they are even or close enough. That is why you have not seen any complaints.

I think the point of the qinggong monk is to consider it a pool of powers any monk can draw from optionally. The default monk is already a qinggong monk. Pick what powers you like.

Well put, just thought it was weird. I guess the image a name brings up is everything.
