Ranged touch attack and Range increment?

Advice

Hello everybody,

I am quite new to PF and have a question on throwing items like Holy Water, Tanglefoot bag, Acid Flask.

What does it mean if it says : The attack is a ranged touch attack (i understand that I think) - with a range increment of 10ft? (i dont understand the second part)

can you explain?

Thanks
Markus

Range increments are the "ideal" range at which a weapon is meant to be used. For thrown weapons, these ranges are often short (generally not more than 20-30 feet) while more traditional ranged weapons (such as bows and crossbows) are much longer (80+ feet). However, just because something is further than the "ideal" range does not mean it is beyond reach.

Each range increment after the first imposes a cumulative -2 penalty on the attack roll. For example, to hit someone with a flask of holy water (range increment 10') who is 40 feet away, you would suffer a -6 penalty. The first range increment is "free." Then out to 20' would be -2, out to 30' at -4, and 40' at -6. A thrown weapon's absolute maximum range is 5 increments (50' for the items you mention). A standard ranged weapon, such as a longbow, can fire out to 10 increments (so a 100' longbow can actually hit out to 1000', albeit at a -18 penalty for range).

Hope that helps!

A range increment is how far you can throw shoot a particular ranged attack before penalties come unto play.

For every 10 feet past the original 10 feet you take a -2.

As an example if you throw one of the items 10 feet you don't take range increment penalties, but if you throw it 15-20 feet away then you take -2 to the attack roll since you have exceeded the 10 feet.
If you toss it 25 feet then you take a -4 since you have exceeded the range increment twice.

And to clarify on the "ranged touch attack", that means that the attack total is compared to the target's Touch AC, rather than their normal AC.

This is to represent attacks, like the goop from a tanglefoot bag, that pretty much ignore the target's normal armor, and deal effects or damage irrelevant of "hard" protection.

For firearms, the ranged touch attack only applies within the initial range increment. Does the same apply for alchemist's bombs?

No. All thrown splash weapons are ranged touch attacks, period, and bombs are thrown splash weapons.

Pretty sure only firearms are Special enough to target touch AC but only sometimes.

Thanks for the clarification.
