Prepaints work much better for my needs, and while I have a deep collection of D&D minis, there's some Pathfinder stuff that just doesn't have an analog in those sets - ugothols and sinspawn spring to mind. So, here's hoping there's more plastic crack in our future than just the Beginner's Box-related set!

While not plastic crack, ulgothols are in this set here and sinspawn are in this set (and the upcoming "Sins of the Saviors" set).

Just wanted to clarify something ... this isn't going to impact the relationship with Reaper in any way is it?* As in, hopefully this isn't the first steps in a migration from one manufacturer to another?

I really hope not, cause I really like the Reaper minis. Though I'll buy these ones too so my kids have some minis they can be a bit more rough with.

* Yes, yes, I realize you can't divulge internal business developments like that, but just wanted to get the thought out.

Relax! Our relationship with Reaper is just fine! We love them and they love us. We love the minis that they put out for Pathfinder. We just sent Sean Reynolds down to Reapercon last weekend and they are sending folks up to Paizocon in a few weeks.

We just felt that there was a need for a box of prepainted plastic miniatures to go along with the Beginner Box at the end of the year. WizKids approached us and has the ability to get this done very quickly, MUCH more quickly than Paizo or anybody else could I wager. So we jumped at the chance. Where this goes from here, nobody knows. But we would NEVER replace metal minis with prepainted plastic ones. Best case scenario is that we are able to provide BOTH avenues for people to get the minis that they want. But for right now, this is a one-shot thing with WizKids and we have lots of ongoing plans with Reaper.

There, feel better? :)

I would feel better if there were more pics of the minis. ;)

I would feel even better if we received confirmation this was going beyond a one-shot deal. :)

That's what I'm worried about.

Also, not sure what your standards are for 'gangbusters'.

Thanks Lisa.

So, the minis are in my core rules subscription too, right? You know how hard it is for me to handle these things on my own. That's why I delegate these tasks to the subscription-bots programmed by the PMG for just this purpose.*

Every product page has to have a price on it—that's just how the system works—and adding a phony price would be a bad idea.

Besides, right now we can't tell you any more about the product than is in the press release...

I dunno...you should list it at $5k, see how that works out. Somebody might buy them.

There was an iPhone app that did something similar. It was a really stupid game, involving popping virtual pimples or something. The creator listed it at $0.99, and it didn't sell that well. So, he set it up to increase the price everytime there was a sale. Apparently, somebody bought a copy even when the price when above $500 (and, others bought it at $10, $50, and $100 before then).

Of course, the damn app store doesn't incorporate the concept of refunds (or customer service), so it may not work out as well for you...

My lack of a morning coffee perhaps made me come across as far more stressed about this than I was (as in, I wasn't at all) :)

I never really worried all that much - I absolutely love that there's going to be both options now. Bring them on, can't wait!

I'm hoping this set will include the 4 central iconics (Merisiel, Ezren, Kyra, Valeros). I would buy multiple sets to use for my PFS games, especially at conventions when I will have new players using the pre-gens.

This really rounds things out nicely. With the Reaper minis, the excellent Paper Mini sets, and now these, there is something for varying tastes, budgets, and degrees of wanting the specific mini.

I recall an article discussing the effect of pricing on digital products. If you price an item too low, you actually get less sales. It was explained as a psychological bias that something that cheap isn't worth buying. Increasing the price turns that bias around in that the product costs more, which means it is 'worth' more. Despite not actually changing in quality.

Okay, let's see what we can glean from Beginner Box photo on Facebook.

Cardboard stand-ups with plastic bases, pre-highlighted numbers on the dice, Rogue / Fighter / and I think Cleric Iconics (supporting the basic four), traits, skills, proficiencies. Seems to support it being Pathfinder L1 - 5 and not a greatly simplified Pathfinder ruleset (more akin to BD&D or something).

Is that a new or pre-existing Flip-Mat? If new, will it be available apart from the box?

One side of it is the same as one side of Flip-Mat: Haunted Dungeon (and depicts the location used for the introductory adventure); the other side is a blank grid taken from Flip-Mat: Basic, so new GMs can make their own maps for further adventures.

^LOOK UP^

It's under the product description.

Any chance we can lock out reviews on unreleased products? I get that some overzealous people are excited, but allowing them to post "reviews" of products they have not read (and in fact do not even possess) works against the purpose of having a review system by degrading the quality of the information therein.

Paizo Employee Senior Software Developer

I agree. The reason we haven't set it up that way in the past has been that products can be released before we actually have them available for sale, and letting the website enforce the rule would probably work against us. Especially since you don't have to have purchased the product here to review it here.

However, we do have much better information about Paizo products, so enforcing a rule like that for our own products makes more sense. For now, we remove reviews like that manually when we see them, and I'd've removed it yesterday when I first saw it but got distracted. Somebody will take care of it today.

RPG Superstar 2008 Top 32

I removed the review.

Thanks guys. I'm sure the product will deserve (and receive) a number of five-star reviews upon release. I know I can't wait to get my hands on it.

Couple of quick questions on the pawns...or foldover minis, or cardstock minis or whatver terminology you guys want to use for them. I actually prefer these kinds of minis over either plastic or metal, so they have my definite interest.

(1) Is this the kind of product that might see stand alone releases -- such as updates to cover all of the critters in all of the bestiaries, or major characters from various sourcebooks and so on?

(2) Will these be released in a sheet format that allows photocopying, such as onto more cardstock pages so we can many, many copies of the critters that come in large numbers?

Many thanks.

The monsters are on a sheet so in theory I suppose you could make copies.

If you're talking about the Beginner Box as a whole, there will be *some* add-on support explicitly for the BB, mainly in the way of stuff on the website... but our main intent is that when Beginner Box players start wanting much more stuff, the main RPG line will be the place for them to go.

If you're talking about packs of just additional pawns, we like the idea, but we don't currently have anything planned. If we get enough people wanting it, we know how to make it happen!

Longshadow1969 wrote:

They are provided via punch-out sheets, and are thus copyable, but finding cardstock thick enough to use the same plastic stands may be tricky. (Note that we do provide multiples of several of the more gregarious beasties.)

Apologies for not reading the entire thread but I was looking up Ultimate Combat's date and noticed this is on the RPG subscription list and have to ask: as an RPG subscriber am I going to be receiving this automatically as part of my subscription?

I don't have a need for it and, though I'd like to support Paizo's efforts along the track of enticing beginners, don't really have an extra $35 to pay for it. Is there a way to opt out of just one item on a subscription?

Rather than quit as a subscriber and sign up again I'll go ahead an buy it and maybe try to find a worthy soul to receive it as a gift...but this seems sort of out of place on a list for someone that has spent $xxx on all of the core "advanced" books.

Not complaining, just asking. :)
M

Yes it's a subscription item.

I'm still wanting to know what the weight is going to be and what the postage to the UK is going to cost..I have already had to forgo the print edition of Tome of Horrors because of ludicrous postage costs and want to know if this is going to have the same problem..

but as I'm still waiting for an answer to the previous requests for this information I'm pretty much resigned to the fact that I ain't going to get one.

Paizo Employee Senior Software Developer

DM Wellard, add it to your cart and proceed to checkout. You'll see what our current best estimate for shipping options and prices to your address. You can remove it from your cart after.

$45.99 postage..thats way too much, over 1.5 times what the box will cost with my discount..

Add to that the fact that UK Customs will class it as a game because it contains dice and slap another 21 % on the price due to taxes.

Looks like I'll be cancelling my RPG sub after Ultimate Combat and renewing in time for Bestiary 3

They were pretty much damned if they did and damned if they didnt with this issue. A bunch of people wanted it to be included as a subscription item and a bunch didn't. I don't know if there's an associated PDF but if there is at least you'll get a free copy as a subscriber.

Paizo seem ridiculously fine with people 'opting out' for one item of a subscription, so I doubt you'd ruffle any feathers (especially given the unique nature of this product).

I can see that...nerd rage is like that. ;) I won't get mad and take my ball home or anything. It just surprised me, that's all. I'll just budget for it and look for someone who deserves more than coal and switches this holiday.
M

Edit: To Paizo: it really is a great idea. Looking forward to checking it out.

We're currently estimating the Beginner Box weight right around 3.5 pounds, which means a packaged weight of slightly over 4 pounds; since the USPS did away with surface mail a few years ago, any international package over 4 pounds can only go International Priority, which is not cheap. (We have the same issue with Core Rulebooks.)

We'll adjust the weight as soon as we get a finished sample, which probably be a few weeks yet, and we'll do everything we can to find a way to package it safely at under 4 pounds if we can, but I'm frankly not optimistic on that right now.

I'm certain now I'll be giving this a miss on my sub as I can get my FLGS to order it for me from Esdevium and even with markup and VAT be sure of getting it cheaper(he gives me 10% off on big items)

BTW, what I really like about it having those 80 pawns is it is perfect for using them while trying to fill your minis collection. And I am hoping the prepainted plastic minis takes off past the first set!

I'm probably going to cancel my sub, not because this isn't a cool product, or isn't a great moment for paizo, but... well I really don't need it (not withstanding the cool art.)

I couldn't agree more. Being a charter subscriber, I own pretty much every sourcebook and rulebook printed for Pathfinder. I do NOT need a beginner box set.
