Boy, so many people actually wanting to work in customer service. Even if it's Paizo, I'd still cut off my left arm than to do that again.

Although I understand where you are coming from, I like customer service.

  • I like being helpful and useful. It’s a nice boost to be able to help people and solve problems. Being helpful makes me happy.
  • I like being in contact with a wide range of people. Customer Service provides an opportunity to connect with all sorts of people that I’m not likely to encounter on my own. This nudge out of my comfort zone and routine bubble of the mundane is healthy growth.
  • I enjoy the pace of activity. It’s fast, active, and fun to be busy.
  • The work plays to my strengths – I’m a polite, diplomatic, and generally upbeat communicator. It’s nice to be in a role where these characteristics really make a difference to the success of my work.

You forgot to mention that you end up with some great stories, either by personal experience or second hand. That is my favorite part about customer service.

Yeah, but most start with "You won't believe what idiot called today..."

They may be funny in hindsight, but if you have to tell them just to get that stuff off you chest, that's not healthy.

I don't agree with the first part. Plenty of them are heartfelt and touching. It is all about how you look at things, observe the world around you, and think of people. Sometimes telling the story isn't about blowing off steam, but instead it is about sharing an experience.

Example: My current job often has me being out in the public with people who have special needs and disabilities. I could either tell you about all the crazy and stressful things they do, or I can tell you about how they suddenly get excited and happy over the small and simple things. Or how one of them has no sense of time or space but when you put Mickey ears on her she lights up and starts clapping excitedly.

Look for the best moments and you will find them. Let your bad attitude take over, and you will miss so much good.

Liberty's Edge

Eh - it's different strokes for different folks. I 100% believe there are people cut out for certain things, and customer service is one of them.

I worked at the internet help desk for a major telecom company and I never had a good day. Once someone's problem was solved and everyone was happy, you hung up the call and immediately got yelled at from a new customer and the cycle repeated, every day, all day. Some of my fellow co-workers would yell, curse, and belittle the customer (while the phone was on mute - those that forgot to press mute were let go pretty quickly); while others, like myself, would sit there, let the customer rant, and then fix their issues. 8 out of 10 the customer apologized for their attitude and the rest of the call would be more relaxed.

It's all in how you let it affect you. You can take it personally or you can just let it go. You can dwell on the idiots who make you weep for the human race, or you can remember those that were ready to throw you a party because you were able to help them solve whatever problem they may be having.

I love that you've called it 'Customer Service Wizard'.

I mostly applied for my current job because the title was 'English Guru', they were recruiting a 'Maths Wizard' at the same time.

Fortunately, that's not the normal CS day at Paizo.

In my experience, the customers of Paizo (at least on the messageboards) tend to be reasonable. Of course, as with any Customer Service position there will be some difficult days, but it is usually much worse when it involves the necessities of daily life, such as, utilities, textbooks, cell phone, insurance, etc.

I have to get on it and update my resume! ^_^
