WHEN
Someone correct me if I'm off, but from Episode 2 onward we've had:
Team Fortress 2 (along with CONSTANT updates)
Portal
Left 4 Dead
Left 4 Dead 2
Portal 2
Please Valve? Can we put some other stuff on pause until we get Episode 3? Pretty please?
(just don't delay Portal 2's release!)
((or the Meet The Medic video))
(((or the new content for L4D)))
((((OH GOD NOW I SEE WHAT THE PROBLEM IS))))
It's just that...the way Episode 2 ended. To leave us hanging for this long... We're hurtin' here, Valve!

I've also been hoping for some more Half-Life 2 goodness or even Half-Life 3. I'd honestly expect to see L4D3 before anything from Half-Life, that's their newest cash cow.
Speaking of which, L4D and L4D2 were each a 6 month distraction at best, both communities dropped off and what remains is something I'd rather not participate in... non-cooperative team-killing newbs and elitest kick-happy jerks.
Team Fortress has had a place in my heart since TF Quake, but the seemingly endless updates (TF2) for the sole purpose to make profit from cosmetic-only updates, not really floating my boat anymore. This is what I play when I need to fulfill my PvP requirements that MMOs fail at horribly.
Portal, I can live without, I had enough of teleporting deathmatch back in my days of playing Quake 1,2 & 3 over LAN. Meh.

In the developers commentary for Episode 2, they stated that they would only do episode 3 when they had a new technology to show off. Then there's the general effect of Valve Time (although given that Portal 2 is looking like it will release early...)

There ain't gonna be an episode 3 nor is there gonna be a half life 3.
There will be. Not until the DotA 2 bubble bursts, people stop buying Team Fortress 2 hats and more countries realise at lot of Steam's corporate policies are shady AF, but when the Steam bubble bursts Valve will realise there's maybe three things that will get fans excited again and they all involve having a "3" in the title.
Whether they'll be any good given that the entire writing and creative team at Valve responsible for those games has left the building is another question altogether.
