Inspire Courage as Cavalier class feature

Homebrew and House Rules

Silver Crusade

I've run into a bit of a conundrum. The setting my characters play in consists of dense forests, swamps, and other terrain that makes mounted travel difficult. One of my players wants to play as a Cavalier, but wants to switch the Cavalier's Mount ability for a more useful one and flavor appropriate one, namely the Inspire Courage Bard class feature. Is this an equal exchange? I was thinking Inspire Courage was a little more powerful, and could perhaps be remedied by also taking away a bonus feat or the like. What are your thoughts on the matter?

Hard to tell for sure without some testing. On one hand, Inspire Courage is extra-useful. On the other hand, the Mount is pretty versatile for a Cavalier - riding, making use of your class bonuses to charge attacks, and it can be an OK combatant on it's own.

My guess is, give it a try. If it turns out too powerful, think about toning it down somehow, or just live with it. But if you're only allowing it for a "test drive", make sure your player is aware that rules can be changed in the course of the campaign, to avoid conflicts.

Well nothing inherently wrong with it. Cept he is probally wanting to go battle herald.

I'd at least increase the BAB requirements of Battle herald to a +5 since he will no longer take that level of bard he needs.

Don't let him double dip IC if that what he tries to do instead. if he does do something like that don't give him the starting 4+cha, but instead just a normal +2.
