Louis Porter Jr.'s Apology for my April Fool's Joke

I'm not going to rehash anything or throw any more fuel on the fire. I just wanted to say that it was the right thing to post this, and you should be commended for doing so.

Spoiler:
I did think the joke was funny

Dark Archive

For the record, I was not offended by the joke.

But I appreciate the sentiment.

Well, it's an apology, but he spends way too much time explaining and excusing himself instead of just saying it was insensitive to the people that have been waiting for RC.

A simple "I'm sorry. It was tasteless." would have been better than trying to explain away why it should have been acceptable.

An aplogy shouldn't contain an excuse...

Sovereign Court

I was not offended(despite having all my preorders stuck), and honestly, while the situation with sinister is unpleasant, the fact that it was april fools was quite a clue, and I think maybe we should all chill out.

Now, about those Recon Cougars ...

Don't worry, SFM... I'm on page 10 of the design doc! ;)

Dark Archive

yes about those recon cougars....

I was not offended, but I appreciate that you offered an apology.

For the sake of making up, you should create an alternative for inviting all those middle-aged paunchy white-collars.

While I find the joke rather unfunny... aged geeks of any persuasion deserve to have sex from time to time... I do not find it particularly offensive. Well, you could have made less focused on fairer sex, but that's all there is to it. At least in my opinion.

Hmm. PFRPG Ranma 1/2, anyone?

Regards,
Ruemere

I have gotten out of this what I said would be enough. It was an apology. I don't think it was forced. To me it was a real apology for something he never thought would blow up in his face. The lesson here, and this is for ANYBODY, is to get feedback on ideas like this. THEN, this is the most important thing, listen to the feedback.

LPJ, you have really apologized, so now I will go back to actually judging your products on their merit. I know others will not, but that is the results you will have to work with. I can forgive, because I had nothing tie up in the Razor Coast. I said before, that I was sure it was a joke, but even I was hoping it was not. The setting always sounded interesting. And I thought that it would upset too many people if it was indeed a joke. So, I hoped you were thinking that too. I understand committing a faux pas. Lord knows I have done many myself. I want everyone here to think about the last time you inserted your own foot in your mouth before you get too lynch party happy.

This was a hoot - and even my Cougar wife thinks it is about spot on.

The thing that others me is that some people found it offensive, guess they don't know many/any cougars.

People must have been trying to be offended.

It wasn't the cougar thing that upset most people. Was the original implication that Razor Coast was finally coming out.

...that would be even funnier if true :P

It was funny, especially the surprise at the end, that never gets old.

We live in sad day and age when something like this must be apologized for. It's almost not even worth trying to pull pranks like this if people are going to be such babies.

Don't ever feel ashamed of your humor Jr, kudos for the attempt!

He knew it was going to pi$$ people off and he did it anyway. The only reasons he apologized is because of the possible backlash against his store, that his sales may be affected.
He made the announcement, offended a bunch of people, and then backtracked with an apology. Happens all the time in the public media. People say and do what they wish and then apologize for it, thinking that the apology makes everything all better. Because, after all, "I said I was sorry."
Pathetic.

It was a fairly standard April fools joke. You tell people something they want to hear but which is inherently improbable to suck them in, then you reveal it is not true and say 'April Fools'. It wasnt set up so well IMO as it started before the day therefore breaking one of what I consider to be the standard rules of April fools but I guess this isn't unheard of.

Some people laugh it off, some get grumpy at being sucked in.

I suspected it was a joke but hoped it wasn't and got sucked in a bit.

I didn't watch the apology because I figured it was meant to be a bit of fun and nothing more. Not a big deal. Not offended.

I will still trust, and appreciate the updates I get from LPJ on Razor Coast from time to time.

It's only my opinion, but I think anyone who was offended, hurt, or meaningfully impacted needs to re-evaluate their life choices.

We're a bunch of gaming nerds. LPJ got our hopes up, as a gag. On April Fool's Day.

Any impact from such an event should - in a healthy individual - be so inconsequential that it's immeasurable. Really, you have yourself to blame if you're bent because of this because you've attached entirely too much meaning and importance to the release of a few RPG products. Even ones that were over-promised and have turned into vapouRPG.

Get upset when someone keys your car. Or poisons your cat. Or down-sizes you into unemployment. Or beats you up.

Not when someone points out who obsessed your are about an RPG product. 'Cuz that's really all LPJ did.

Unforgivable.

IIRC he said he did not know that Razorcoast was as big a deal as it was, and he assumed(bad idea on his part) that a very small amount of people were taking it seriously that it would ever come to exist.

PS:Pranks do piss people off, but they are normally done so that the person is only slightly irritated and laughs about it once they realize they have been had. LP made a terrible decision due to the fact that the anger level was well beyond irritation for some people.
PS2:You have no way of knowing that he did not feel bad so don't make assumptions. You see how much trouble that caused him.

Things which would make people roll their eyes and groan at worst on April 1 are a lot more likely to cause irritation on, to pick a non-random example, March 30. If Louis had stuck to a joke on the day instead of advertising his announcement in advance I doubt there would have been nearly so much anger.

I agree. I heard of RC a while back, but had forgotten about it until recently, and I also thought he had acquired it when the announcement was brought up days in advance. I saw a lot of heated posts from the thread here before LP got his prank into motion, and it did seem people were quiet serious about it since they had invested in it.

On a related note I don't understand why Nick(is that his name) won't sell the rights if he is not going to produce it.

If Nick is the wrong name I do apologize. My knowledge of 3pp producers is not that good.

One I share.

Seriously, some people need to get a bit of a grip.

And you can't even tell me that these same people who are so pissed off about LPJ's joke, wouldn't have been treating him like he was the Second Coming if he actually had gotten the rights to Razor Coast and was bringing it out.

As if that's some kind of double standard?

ditto

I have no connection to Razor Coast or anything, but I believe the joke was in bad taste... or rather poorly executed. The 3 day advance warning was the failure that caused so much backlash.

If he'd posted the teaser he sent up 3 days early on April Fools with a link to the "Cougar" joke then it wouldn't have had this issue. A joke shouldn't have a three day build up which is what caused the tension that led to this. It'd have been a 1 minute joke and over. Instead people that spent money were given 3 days to wonder.

At this point I don't really care, it's over.

Liberty's Edge

If this AprilFools joke would'nt have a history (like LPJ talking really bad about RC and Nick Logue in the past), no one would've been pi$$ed off - at least I would'nt. Than it would've been a joke, nothing else, no discussion needed.
But this whole issue looks (at least for me), like still beating the same horse which is already down (even if RC will be published one day). I don't like that!!!

The same could be said of all threads.

Which would leave only three threads left on the board to discuss upon.

This is me as well. I have been waiting for RC since it was open for pre orders and even though I was excited that LPJ might have had it I thought it was a great set up and execution of an April Fools prank. Dude's apologizing where he probably by all rights doesn't have to and that is decent of the man. Chillax folks.
