Grand Lodge

A placeholder for ooc discussion and especially character concepts ahead of the game.

It looks like the recruitment did work very well. I doubt we have the final group together - but this should be a more appropriate place to discuss characters and the game.

More to follow over the next hour.

My current plan is:
Get characters concepts together and get them approved over the next week.
Give the GM time to read the remaining story and prepare the first two acts.
Prepare a background story and your introduction at the opening of the will.
GM to prepare individual boons to be handed out.

I aim to have the first post of the actual game on Sunday 27th with your first reply/introduction by the following Tuesday to ensure your place in the game.

Please let me know if you have any problems with this timing ahead of time, so that I can work on some individual solution.

I will post in a moment the current list of players and reserve as well as comments for character concepts. Please allow me a moment to get that post together.

Thod

Grand Lodge

Let's start with the official player and reserve list.

Uchendu - Raven Half Elf Summoner

Atzi - I need a confirmation if this works with your private life and a character concept

DM Wellard - Andrea Greenhold - Human Witch - I need confirmation that Andrea is the actual character you would like to play

Diskordant - Lluren - I need a character concept and confirmation that you are not playing in the all Hellknight Carrion Crown as well

Varnulf Wulfson - Cassandra Blackmore - cleric of Pharasma or Oracle of Life - changeling

Kevin Darlok - human Fighter - Aldori Swordlord

Reserves

1st reserve Fraust
2nd reserve Painlord
3rd reserve Arazni - Gnome Oracle of life

Grand Lodge

Uchendu

I prefer Raven over the JuJu Oracle. Especially as we seem to have a few Witches/Oracles.

Please be aware that being Halfelf and a Summoner both can pose more challenging in diplomatic situations in superstitious Ustalav. Especially if your Eidolon is with you.

You might get a negative circumstance bonus on diplomacy checks. I will wave them if you convince me so via good role play or once you earned trust. But initial reactions can be more difficult.

I like the background and the connection with the Prof.

Just build Raven up in full detail.

Thod

Grand Lodge

Wellard

I like the concept and background of Andrea - but I only later realized she was originally build for another game that folded. Could you please confirm that you play with her. I will then look at her again in more detail.

Thod

Posting as a reserve. :( Why does everyone want to play an oracle of life for this game. I thought the character seemed unique.

:)

Grand Lodge

Varnulf Wulfson

A changeling is fine. Either cleric or oracle of life should do.

Following Pharasma:
The only temple in town of Ravengro where the Prof lived is following Pharasma. Keep this in mind if you write your background story. If you have been in Ravengro for some time, then please add a paragraph that includes your relation to the temple at that time.a

Not sure why this is the case ...

Some remarks I did make above to Uchendu could apply to a 'strange gnome' as well. You have to be aware that you are in a superstitious environment.

As Oracle of Life there is a good chance you also chose Pharasma. In this case please have a look at the spoiler for Varnulf Wulfson. It will the also apply to you.

Already posted in the recruitment thread but for thoroughness figured I'd repost here too.

The hellknights game has bot finished casting, and my chances are slim, there's 21 for only 6 slots and my character isn't even submitted yet as I still am digesting the hellknight fluff to make a character with.

With that said in full disclosure I am in a pbem for carrion crown, so unfortunately I guess that means I have to withdraw. Sad. But thems the breaks I guess.

Have fun all.

Grand Lodge

Kevin Darlok

I like the character and the background. All that is needed is some refinements to ensure you don't fall afoul of any of the character generation rules. I will have a more detailed check tomorrow and will let you know if I spot anything.

I like the idea of a minor noble and Aldori Swordlord. It also ties in nicely to his background with the Professor.

Checking in.

Thanks for the invite Thod.

Here is a link to Cassandra: Cassandra Blackmoore

I'll post a background and purchase the rest of her gear later. Should have everything ready by tomorrow night.

Yeah, technically, Cassandra looks almost exactly like Avarinelle. Sigh... Well, I suppose I can come up with a different character.

1d17 ⇒ 6
1d10 ⇒ 8
1d7 ⇒ 2

An elven monk of the sacred mountain? Huh.... okay. Have to look into the players guide again. That might not even be feasible. :)

Of course, I'm just a reserve character anyway. But if I am chosen (should someone not be available, I guess I'll run with that idea).

Posting as a reserve...changed things up a little, and I'm aware of the stigma an elf would suffer.

Background:

Intrigued by the haunted landscape of Ustalav and its arcane history, Nym has spent the last few decades in Caliphas studying fencing as well as wizardry. He first came to the attention of professor Lorrimor years ago while an aristocratic student was arguing with the professor on the subject of fencing. Nym came into the conversation, supporting Lorrimor’s position. The discussion was settled with Nym and the aristocrat dueling to first blood. The duel was a close fight, but Nym won out in the end, scoring a slash on the back of the aristocrat’s hand.

The professor came to Nym on several occasions afterward, hiring him as a liaison when dealing with rougher elements on campus. Durring their dealings the pair would often bounce back and forth between matters martial and planar, often speaking late into the night over drinks.

Upon graduation, Lorrimor gave him a finely crafted fencing sword before they parted ways.

I'm just going through them in opposite order of posts over night. If you wonder about replies - I'm on UK time Zone.

Looks ready to go. I will copy all characters later today (or when available) to HeroLab for the final blessing. Helps me spotting anything missing.

Thod

A magus ... I have to admit I didn't follow the play test but rather was waiting for the final product. I've no problems with a magus - to the contrary - he could add some spells for the group. And I can learn a little bit more about the magus.
But good that I gave myself a week before start. Characters look ready - but I would do everyone a disfavor jumping in and doing stuff afterwards.

Some remarks to the build;
I think you have well overspend. PFS allows 150 gp.

Heirloom weapon: is this the rapier or do you refer to the dueling swords given by the Professor? On first glance I felt that damage output of a rapier with your Str. Looks pretty weak. Yesterday I helped build an elven rogue with heirloom weapon and elven curved blade. While i'm not trying to advertise munchkin here - it did fit in this case. This is in case it is the rapier right now.

If it is the duelling swords. Heirloom weapon still mean that you pay basic price for the item. This could be an issue (don't have the right book at hand to check out dueling sword) as you are already having issues with gold. But if build into the background - I could give this as early gift to you. You already did something along the lines in your current background.

You just wouldn't get anything later at the opening of the will.

The character so far looks fine. It will probably cause me an issue with HeroLab (haven't checked when changeling will be available) but that is just a minor inconvenience.

I think you still have an overspent.

Possible solutions:

The easiest would be to drop the chain shirt and take studded leather instead. That would yield 75gp.
Studded leather might not fit into your view of a minor noble sword lord.
You could start with some broken Armour for less (down on luck lately). In this case it might need a make whole. The cost would be negotiable with me between zero and half price.
Or I could look into some Armour in the will.

Please let me know your preference. In case of broken Armour / Armour in the will, do it via spoiler.

Thod

Grand Lodge

Aldous Preklikin

I have to admit I'm impressed how you turned a potential liability for the group - half-elf summoner with Eidolon - into an asset for diplomacy. Especially as it is done in a pretty convincing way.

You got me searching for your favored class skill - but eventually I found the 1/4 extra evolution point.

Nitpicking:
RAW you would need to assign your second favorite class (half-elf special) at character generation. I don't cate that much and feel free to decide once you double-class - if ever.
The same goes for the three extra class skills for the Eidolon that still can be assigned. I'm happy if you do that at lvl 2. Right now it makes no difference as you don't have skill points left.

That is character one ready to go.

Thod

Edit: nearly forgot one bit. Where is the silver mask from. I'm not subscribed to every book in hero lab - so didn't find it.

Male 'Human' Summoner 2

Thanks :-)

Given that Ustalav is the 'Land of Gothic Horror', I wanted to come up with an interesting/unusual character, that thematically would be appropriate for the region (in terms of fear and hidden secrets) - however, I did not want to cause the party too much angst by doing so, so I decided to see what I could do to work around it :-)

--------------

Aldous does not get a second 'favoured class' - he has 'Arcane Training' (essentially, it allows him to use Spell-Completion and Spell-Trigger items from the Summoner Spell List as if he was one level higher than he actually is) instead of 'Multi-talented'.

--------------

As for the other three class skills for the Eidolon, I was waiting to see if we ended-up with a Rogue in the party; if not, they would probably end-up being Disable Device, Linguistics, & Sleight of Hand, so that we have some coverage of the 'Rogue' skills, although I agree that at present, selecting them is really a moot point :-)

--------------

Regarding the Mask, it is an item of clothing in the Adventurer's Armoury - Masks are listed as being anywhere from 5sp to 50gp, depending on how elaborate they are, so for a plain silver mask, I opted for somewhere in the middle :-)

Grand Lodge

Cassandra Blackmore

Here are a few quick comments for your character

Lvl 1 spells - you should get Cure Light Wounds as bonus spell. That leaves one more first level spell to choose.

Favored class bonus: you write you did take the +1 skill point - but I could only see 4 points assigned - heal, knowledge nature and planes and spell craft.

Hag Trait - I didn't spot that you selected this. I guess the Hulking changeling or Green Widow seem most appropriate. Sea Lungs would need some explanations.

I added studded leather, light crossbow, morningstar and sickle. That leaves 74 gp. I haven't yet added ammunition.

Looks overall pretty fine to me.

Backgrounds needs adding - but we still have quite some time. So no worry. I just wanted to ensure you have time to deal with all of the above.

Thod

Grand Lodge

Aldous

Thanks for the added info. I didn't look through the racial traits in detail to spot it.

You make my life easier if you add a short note in case you add something from a 'strange source' or other vice non obvious.

I found the arcane training and I did spot the mask from the armory earlier but didn't connect it as it was given with minimal cost.

It's in the section under Racial Traits. I chose Green Widow as her trait. Ties in with the Tongues curse, she speaks Aklo (her mothers tongue), when she's stressed.

I couldn't find the Sword Scion trait. Where is it from?

I haven't yet added equipment as I wait for you to sort out the money and it works better with two screens (iPad is now charging).

Everything else looks fine.

Cassandra

Another one who hides stuff in racial traits ... I did spot the Curse and Aklo - must have missed the Green Widow.

I added Bless, Diplomacy and the Green Widow. I currently have you as Half-Elf with some changes for extra +2/-2 abilities and AC+1 in the computer. If I quote a value and you feel it's wrong - let me know. This could be the cause.

Languages
Changelings speak the primary language of their host society and common. I can be convinced that that means you add Varisian as primary language of your host society if this is mentioned in your background.

And I haven't found the superstitious ward. What book is it from? For the moment I selected Magical Talent which more or less would allow the same but Superstitious Ward seems to fit better.

Thod

Male 'Human' Summoner 2

@Thod: Sword Scion is one of the 'Campaign Traits' from the Kingmaker Adventure Path. Essentially, it gives you weapon focus in both Aldori Dueling Swords and Longswords for the cost of a trait, so it is a fairly good deal (especially compared to the 'power' of the Carrion Crown ones).

I have included the text for the trait in a spoiler.

Sword Scion:
You have lived all your life in and around the city of Restov, growing up on tales of Baron Sirian Aldori and the exploits of your home city’s heroic and legendary swordlords. Perhaps one of your family members was an Aldori swordlord, you have a contact among their members, or you have dreamed since childhood of joining. Regardless, you idolize the heroes, styles, and philosophies of the Aldori and have sought to mimic their vaunted art. Before you can petition to join their ranks, however, you feel that you must test your mettle. Joining an expedition into the Stolen Lands seems like a perfect way to improve your skills and begin a legend comparable to that of Baron Aldori.
Benefit: You begin play with a longsword or Aldori dueling sword and gain a +1 trait bonus on all attacks and combat maneuvers made with such weapons.

Grand Lodge

Aldous

Thanks - wasn't a place I was looking.

And I also just found the Superstitious Ward.

Thod

Grand Lodge

Kevin

Technical speaking Sword Scion could cause an issue due to it's source. Looking at your character concept (Aldori Swordlord, son of a minor noble) I could be convinced.

Add some time in Restov to your background (at least a year) and I could look the other way. For example it could fit inbetween the time you parted with the Professor and prior to the call to come to the opening of his will.

I hope there are no complains/ill feelings from other players about bending rules here or setting a precedent. My main reason to allow it is, that I can see it fitting snugly into the background and character. Without the character being an Aldori Swordlord, Son of a minor Noble and from a neighbouring region (River Kingdoms) I would feel much less inclined to allow it.

It's unusual and certainly needs some more thoughts to generate a background story. But surprise me :)

Thod

Thod,

How much is starting gold, I will redo my gear, no problem.

As for the trait, I was leaning towards the Sword Scion trait appling to Mivon also since it is also blessed with Aldori. If the problem is that it is a campaign trait I could easily switch it out with Heirloom Weapon: Aldori Dueling Sword.
I took the Sword Scion Trait for back ground and the +1 to CMB. Heirloom seemed a little unfair. I would start with +1 Melee with my sword and a free Masterwork.

Mivon:
Guide to the River Kingdoms wrote:
Most Aldori of Brevoy regard Mivoni Aldori as part of a subfaction of the swordpact, and many seek duels with the Mivoni to prove the superiority of their own branch of the tradition. The Mivoni conduct regular duels and face constant incursions from bandits and other fame-seekers drawn from across the River Kingdoms, and so their style has necessarily adjusted itself to become a broader, more encompassing net, a defensive style from which strikes and counters spit like lightning. Swordlords from Brevoy come to Mivon to test their skill and the strength of the Mivoni, and those who return to Brevoy—many of them grievously wounded—report that the Mivoni swordpact flourishes.

Thanks for the information of Mivon. I do have the guide to the River Kingdoms but didn't assume anything special about Mivon compared to the rest of the Kingdoms. Keep the Sword Scion trait - no problem in this case.

I'm mainly concerned that it fits in and make sense and I didn't make the connection myself.

Starting gold is 150. It is the PFS standard. It might make some classes more difficult at start - but I hope soon that hundred gp more or less at start don't matter.

Yeah, "on the payroll"...figured as a noble poser I would need the extra cash.

Sorry I didn't make it clearer, but the heirloom weapon is the rapier. I refered to it as a dueling sword in the background because that's how the character would view it. It's not a new weapon out of any strange source...though I would have prefered to use a cane sword out of the APG for theme (their stats are unimpressive though).

forgotten stuff:
alignment =LN deity=Nethys (though not terribly religious)
Starting languages...well crap. Do you know where it talks about what countries speak what languages? I'll go through the players guide again and see if I can find anything after I post this.
Also, I'm not seeing a spoiler addressed to me

magus:

As for build...I'm a little weaker than I could be starting off (compared to other magi builds), but probably not as bad as you might think. At second I'll be able to chanel spells (such as chill touch) through the rapier when I attack, so the -1 damage will be overshadowed. Through first level, I'll mostly be a flanking budy using my high AC and fighting defensively to keep from getting dead while helping somene who can hit do their job.

For spells...they have a spell book with all 0th level magus spells, and 3+int mod spells, and gain two every magus level afterward. Pretty sure they can copy from scrolls and other spell books like a wizard.

Any other questions I'd be glad to answer. This is my first time playing a magus, but I've been going through other APs converting over NPCs to the new classes from the APG and the playtest document...so I've made three or four magi now and looked through a lot of the message board posts on the subject.

Unless you think its completely unfeasible, I'll think I'll try the monk of the sacred mountain. I think she might be a traveling companion of this magus, both dedicated to special training procedures. Sorry about the delay, will attempt to have something up today.

Okay.... new character concept:

Galadan Teresthin, N male elf inquisitor of Pharasma

Galadan is an undead hunter, for lack of better terms, having spent a great deal of time researching the undead and seeking them out to at least incapacitate them if not destroy them. In the recent past he assisted Professor Lorrimor as a researcher in a distant university, looking for necromantic powers found in the light and shadowy places of the world.

Appearance: Galadan has black hair and black eyes, which is unusual for an elf to say the least.

Traits: On the Payroll, Undead Slayer

Cut down gear to below 150g.
Kept the Chain Shirt, got rid of the short bow and other items.

First the bad news. I was spontaneously invited to tea and since dinner the sole PC running HeroLab is taken. All in depth character reviews will have to wait until tomorrow evening.

The good news. We seem to progress very well. And I wasn't completely idle. I've now read through parts 1-3 in more detail. Good enough to run it F2F. For PBP it still needs some more work. So I'm itching now to start. But I keep the start at next Sunday. Better to have a few parts pre-written.

Fraust

No - I didn't do a spoiler for you. I only do spoilers if I feel something I say could give away information or influence the future plot. I do read all the back story and try to integrate it into the story.
Sometimes small details can make a difference. Assume you run into the ghost of a mass murderer who targeted green haired gnomes. In case you play a gnome I would ask precisely your hair color and if the annswer is green - well - assume you just got special attention. I don't want meta-gaming because of weird questions. So any such question will go into a spoiler.

All

Two more questions for which I like the input from all players.

Q1: Harrow Points. I did notice them when I leaved through the player guide. But I completely forgot them when I wrote about the rules of the game. Are there any strong feelings against Harrow Points?

I don't want that you get the feeling I alter rules on the fly. You want to know what to expect to enjoy the game. These are details I should have listed originally but it slipped.

Q2 follows in a moment (or two)

Thod

Grand Lodge

Q2 - so far I have liked every single character concept presented here. Or at least all reservation have been overcome when I saw them in more detail and skepticism turned into approval.

This leads to a small dilemma at the moment for Painlord and Arazni. They have to hope for someone to leave before they can start. I really like Wren - the FeatherMage/Witch and look forward to more details about Galadan.

Preparing parts 1-3 I realized that the actual number of players before part 4 doesn't matter that much. During information gathering it doesn't matter to have one more person trying - or one more person not trying because only a single one in the group can do it.

The few fight scenes are simple enough to scale from 2 to 3 or 4 critters. This medium works different to a table situation where I would never suggest something similar. but here you have to wait a day or two anyhow before the plot moves on.

I expect 6-8 weeks minimum for parts 1-3. I wouldn't replace any character who drops (unless we go below 6). This question might be mood as I'm still waiting for two answers. But it could be better to allow them from the start instead of finding reasons to add them after two or three weeks.

Feel free to e-mail me if you have strong feelings about this but don't want to raise them here in public. It's important for me that you have fun and like the game. So far I like what I have read and really can't wait to share it and see how the group manages.

Thod

Sorry about the delay..I'm having major problems signing into the message boards from home and at present can only post from work which means I am very limited in what I can do

Yes Andrea is the character I will be playing in this.(Ive started her 4 times before and got nowhere so hopefully she isn't a jinx character.)
