I'm re posting this from an industry mailing list I belong to because I think it's important ...

Jim Roslof, one of the early artists and art directors for TSR, is dying from cancer and does not have many days left. His wife, Laura said cards are welcome and seem to cheer him up. If you're interested, please send kind thoughts to

Jim Roslof was one of my faves back in the day.

Pretty sad.

Scarab Sages

That always sucks. My thoughts are with him and his family.

That sucks. I'll get a card in the mail for him.

Very sad. My prayers are with Jim and his family. He made some nice contributions to my childhood. Thanks for the thread, Marc.

Dark Archive

So sad. We are having a Pathfinder Society gathering at the store this weekend and I'll make sure to pass a card around. Thanks for letting us know Marc.

That was before my time, but I looked him up just now, and found this:

In praise of Jim Roslof

Not bad. Not bad at all. Not my favourite style (probably a generation gap thing), but good stuff nonetheless. Especially compared to some of the stuff I've seen about the old days of D&D art. That man really knew how to paint.

Due to that ocean between the USA and here, a card of my own isn't really an option, but maybe my words will reach him nonetheless.

So if you can read this, Jim:
You were there right at the action, long before many of us even learned about this awesome thing that is called roleplaying. Some of us weren't even born yet (I wasn't).

You were among the first who brought the heroes and villains of this game alive before the players' eyes, and who knows how many other artists you inspired. I thank you for the contribution you made to this awesome hobby, which really is more than a hobby for most of us. Our short vacation trips from reality wouldn't look as good as they do without you.

That picture of Thor from Deities & Demigods was awesome. I loved it as a kid!

In my early college gaming days, Jim's artwork captivated me and propelled me into buying more than a few modules and books. Hope he and his wife find peace and comfort during this terrible time...

Grand Lodge

Sad, I just saw he passed either last night or this morning.

Yeah, that's what I saw on Wikipedia. +RIP, Jim, and condolences to his friends and family.

Liberty's Edge

May Jim Roslof rest in peace. May his family and friends be comforted in their sorrow.

I remember his artwork well, from the days I first started gaming. May Jim Roslof be remembered fondly by gamers around the world.

Another of the 'Old Guard' gone.

From the Ghost Tower of Inverness I salute you

Marc, thanks for posting this; I'd not have know otherwise. :(

"A! Elbereth Gilthoniel!

Gilthoniel, A! Elbereth!

We still remember, we who dwell,
In this far land beneath the trees,
The starlight on the western sea."

I'll send a card to Laura Roslof, expressing my condolences.

Some of Roslof's drawings were burned into the back of my young mind. Part of me craves that old style, but art evolves...

So I'll draw my next picture with him in mind.

Thanks for the images that set the mood all those years ago.

I remember playing 1st ed and looking at the art.(I always look at the art first.) He was one of the originals. My condolences to the family. RIP Jim Roslof.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

That's such heart breaking news. I hope the cures are released soon. There's good people dying.
