At the same time, Conan the Destroyer holds, IMHO again, the doubtful honor of being worse than Krull.
Aw, hey now! Them's fightin werds!!! Krull was awesome!! Hot chick and all! If only they'd given him more time to fight with the Glaive?!?

The worst thing about Krull - interestingly original premise with underwhelming (understatement of a year) execution - makes for big disappointment.

It....It's like....I don't know you anymore!

I liked Krull. I saw it in the theater when I was 12 or so.

The NPC who could see his own death freaked me out.

And the Glaive may be the best weapon EVER!

I know it's billed as "the best scene," but still, after watching that clip, I kind of want to see the whole movie.

Conan the Destroyer is a great movie, D&D movie that is not Conan. Seriously, sit down and watch it and keep in mind it is a D&D movie and not a Conan movie. It suddenly gets a lot better.

I am waiting for the day when a great D&D movie is actually a good movie by any other standard. I don't think I've ever seen one.

I'd humbly nominate Your Highness, for one.

I'd forgotten about that one - it disappeared from the theaters pretty quickly... I haven't seen it yet, but I really enjoyed the trailers, so hopefully I'll agree :)

It's like putting a shower scene in a horror film then shooting it all shoulders up/knees down. Why are you bothering to used contrived devices to show nudity if you're not going to show nudity!?!
That would be pretty stupid thing to do.

Congratulations, you found the only exception to the rule and in doing so completely missed the point. Way to go. Two thumbs up.

ETA: Here's an example of the kind of scene I was mocking. (sadly SFW). We get Jessica Alba, naked in a shower, holding her hand over her boob so we don't accidentally see a nipple (shock!), and then getting out of the shower and...and...why was she in there in the first place? Does it have anything to do with the story? Is it important in any way?

No, it's this BS titillation scene made "safe," because apparently gratuitous nudity is, I dunno, sexist or some rot. I say that you either go whole hog and just revel in your own crepulence and use the shower scene as the excuse it is to show off an actress wet and naked, or you cut the damn scene out of the script in a effort to be non-exploitative. I don't really care which way a filmmaker goes, but this half-assed let's have our cake and our dignity too nonsense is just annoying.

No I got the point, it was just as Spanky pointed out, the scene is SO ICONIC, that if you mention shower and horror, that is the first thing people tend to think of. I was just making a joke.

I pretty much agree that doing shower scenes to tease but not show is kind of pointless.

Now I don't think shower scenes have to be about teasing though. There is something very intimidate of showers. Part of it is being vulnerable (nude and also not totally aware due to shower curtain). But it is also intensely personal, a closed in space where your cries (or singing as the case may be) can be covered by the noise of the water. A place where you can get away from everything.

For example, in this scene yes you get to see some butt here, but I don't think the point of the shower scene is for titillation.

Scarab Sages

The shower scene in Psycho had a point. It's exactly how she dies in the book. It served to show two things: 1) no one was safe and 2) no where was safe. Before that, the lead actor was never killed off and no one ever bought it in the shower. Psycho changed all that. The shower scene with Jessica Alba was too long and really did nothing to advance the plot. They could have cut a lot of it out and end up with te same result.

::headdesk::

When I said "shower scene," I was using that as shorthand for "the common trope of low budget, exploitative sci-fi/horror films made 80's," not for "every scene set in a shower."

The Ace Ventura example you gave, for example, is not a shower scene, so much as its a comedic version of the Shower of Angst.

But this has less and less to do with Conan. So we should stop.

Just one more shower scene and I'll stop.

PS. In the retrospect, I've watched Krull years after premiere. I was spoiled silly by movies that came after, and that's why my memory of the film may be a bit harsh.

Liberty's Edge

I made the mistake of buying a copy of Krull a year or so ago, having not watched it since I was in my teens, and showed it to some friends. They were like "This movie is boring and sucks," and all I could do is say "I remember this being so much cooler."

Still, FIREMARES ARE AWESOME. This is a FACT. I've included them in many, many campaigns and players who don't recognize their source always think I'm some kind of uber-genius for having thought them up.

I would give them the same stats as nightmares, except good alignment. Thinking of, sounds like these firemares ARE nightmares, and that the show editors changed their names to firemares just to avoid legal complications... :P

My wife almost cries when the glaive gets stuck.

And yes, they should have used the glaive more, like when they were trying to invade the black fortress.

Liberty's Edge

It'd be cool if they remade Krull. The basic story is solid, but the effects simply didn't live up to it - especially the glaive and the beast and the whole end fight. Major let-down.

But do it with modern CGI and it could be truly awesome.

Wouldn't his hand rust in the shower.

As for Krull my mom loves that movie, but then again that is her maiden name.

Just hope the stuff that sounds cool isn't dudez who should've been consulted for the screenplay making up cool stuff's.

Aluminum alloy. Besides, character biography (prior to this particular scene) does not bode well for his retirement plans (the whole world is about to collapse).

Regarding your mother's maiden name - is it really spelled Krull? Maybe it's Król or Kral?

nope her last name is Krull, same as my uncle on her side of the family or my grandparents. Plus my parents got divorced and she went back to that name. i know it well, every time I write her a letter. Same spelling as the movie which is I think a reason she loves the movie. Though to be fair she has always liked fantasy movies and books.

For the record those curious they pronounce it that is sounds a lot like Crawl.

The Exchange

New Trailer. It's described as the first scene of the film. I think it is more, 'clipped from the first scene', but still, it's pretty cool.

Ron Perlmen, Picts and a teenaged Conan... How freaking awesome is that?

Yup. Never had any doubts.

Liberty's Edge

That was totally badass. Especially when he spit out the unbroken egg.

It looks like they were influenced by the Kurt Busiek run of Conan for Dark Horse - in that version, which is (IMO) one of the best ever, the young Conan is shown to be something of a runt amongst the Cimmerians, which only makes him fight that much harder. I like that this version seems to be going along with that idea, with the young Conan being noticeably smaller than his peers.

I'm with Spanky. So. Completely. Stoked.

I didn't get a 'runt' impression, rather that he was younger than the other boys. The other boys were all wearing white ceremonial looking furs, while Conan was dressed in his everyday stuff. Ron Perlman has the attitude of, 'Aw, what the hell? I'll humor him'.

Well, what I saw was probably influenced by reading Busiek's take, but I thought Conan was just the smallest of the boys and wasn't wearing the white furs because he was late to the ceremony and didn't have time to change.

I also think he was just to young, but eager and the elder was humoring him. From what I recall Conan killed his first man at a very young age and joined the warriors well before the age most boys did so.

It's like Musashi;
he wupped a grown samurai when he was thirteen.

Though to Conan's credit, he didn't whup any thirteen year olds after becoming a grown samurai. ;)

Well he was 15 and already a very respected warriorwhen the Cimmerian sacked Venarium.

I don't know. The more previews I see, the less I like it when Jason Momoa is talking. With the lines I have heard, he sounds too educated and eloquent to be a barbarian and his voice does not have the depth I would expect from Conan. Also, I read many of the stories before I saw the Arnold version of Conan, so I am not just comparing Jason's voice to Arnold's. While I will see it, it will be a dollar theater or dvd viewing for me.

I am bit disappointed Momoa rolled his eyes at the mention of the riddle of steel (probably the 500th and counting.) I would hope he understood its importance to the Conan sagas, and by this time have come up with a 'stock answer' if not a really good answer.

...or maybe he's just tired of all the fanboi crap?

I, for one, am glad to see that the primary focus of this film is the Howard stories, and not the Ahnold movie. Riddle of Steel? Ain't got a thing to do with Conan. Now if only he looked Irish...

I am looking forward to this movie more and more. I am a fan of the old Howard stories and if this really does stay close to those roots then I hope it is a big success and we get a string of movies.

The Exchange

The more plot points I see in the teasers and trailers the more it seems like they are following the bare basics of the Arnold movie for a plot. The less I like this. The less it seems like a Conan movie. It might end up being a good fantasy flick and that is all great; I doubt it will be an REH Conan movie. Which is sad on so many levels.

I have seen it folks. I saw, I liked, I am content.

No plot spoilers here, just spoilers of a few overall impressions:

2 things about it worse than the Arnie version:

Spoiler:

John Milius created a distinctive style. Nispel Did not. The usual Hollywood styling.
Basil Poledouris. Whoever did the 2011 soundtrack did nothing memorable.

2 things about it better than the Arnie version:

Spoiler:
Jason Mamoa
Computer generated effects

2 things that just made me laugh:

Spoiler:
Hyborian winnebago (you'll know what I mean)
Conan's dad saying "I love you son."

2 things that disappointed me:

Spoiler:
Not pure Robert E Howard faithful (although hitting far FAR closer than 1982 IMO, so maybe this isn't really a disappointment)
I had to watch the censored Philippine version. A really sloppy, pointless, and inconsistent attempt to make it acceptable in a country with really mixed up moral standards.

2 things that were teh awesome:

Spoiler:
How Conan passed the Cimmerian rite of warriorhood. Already spoiled in previews of course.
The fight choreography. Especially Conan.
