Anyone out there had a chance to dig into Hok the Mighty yet? We'd love to hear what you thought of the book. How do you think it compares with Who Fears the Devil? or any other Wellman you might have read? And how does it stack up with other prehistoric fiction of the pulp era, such as that of Burroughs (The Eternal Lover/Savage, etc.) and Haggard (Allan and the Ice-Gods)?

This was great. Made me feel like reading the Tarzan series again!
Yeah, it was good stuff. Does anyone know if Poul Anderson ever read "Day of the Conquerors"? It reminded me of The High Crusade, but was written a bit earlier.
By the way, I just finished reading "Battle in the Dawn" and I wasn't disappointed. I especially liked the scientastic footnotes!
The only odd thing was that Hok seemed to get amnesia after "Hok Goes to Atlantis"; after seeing all kinds of Bronze Age technology, he's still mystified by metal, etc. in later stories, not to mention forgetting about his nifty club with a giant diamond for a head.

I can't recall if Wellman left any cues to indicate it one way or another, but perhaps he didn't publish the stories in internal story order (we arranged the stories in publication order). Or possibly he just slipped up. Something to look out for the next time I read the stories!

Some of the later stories did refer back to it, for what it's worth. They were all good stories, I just thought the Atlantis one sort of seemed like the odd man out, in a sense (i.e. Hok isn't the most advanced guy in the room).
