Okay, I don't know if this was already posited, but it seems that the majority of people are clamoring for pirates or Land of the Linnorm Kings/Irrisen. It seems a simple solution to please the two largest camps is:

VIKINGS!!!

Northmen plying the seas, raiding the coastal cities and putting the fear of 7' tall, 300 lb, bearded men with greataxes into everyone. (Gee, can't imagine why) Sailing the coastline of Varisia laying waste to every settlement you find. (Burn Sandpoint! Burn!) Sailing through the shadowy waters of Nidal before slipping past the Chelaxian naval blockade of Aroden's Arch and wreaking havoc on both Avistan and Garund. Sailing into Byzant... er, Absalom to trade your plundered loot and hand over all those poor orphans you took in to good loving homes. (Which way to the slave markets?) Then it's back the way you came to do it all again, hitting the bigger cities for better loot... and more orphans. (We've heard the horror stories of what they're doing with the orphans in Isger and damnit, someone has to save them.)

Arrive back home just in time to send off your own beloved Linnorm King (may his longship run agound a sandbar and he die of thirst before he even sees Arcadia), break the heads of all those upstarts who thought themselves your better (or worse, your equal) and get to go out hunting a linnorm to prove that all of civilization rightly fears your battle prowess(but not nearly as much as they do the body odor and rancid breath. No, not the linnorm's).

Maybe this does skew towards the northerners, but the pirate fans shouldn't be put out. We'll get you a brocaded coat from a Chelaxian tailer (yes from out of his cold dead fingers) and a parrot from some garundi port (one of them's bound to survive the fire). No you may not have an eyepatch (real men like the looks ladies give their empty eye sockets just before they start screaming).

While "Planescape" is WotC IP, the aligned planes and the planes in general are not. The specific names for the planes are, but Paizo has their own. Even has a major city in one of them (Axis).

Around Golarion in 80 days (or 15 levels), a big race/scavenger hunt/chase with a little bit of everything thrown in, Mammoths, pirates, underdark boat rides, airships, etc.

A level 15-20 AP

megadungeon- something like part one of Age of Worms, where the group had numerous leads to follow, both in the town and in the dungeon, and had to go back and forth several times. Some mystery solving thrown in. Puzzles, riddles, stores with specific lists of items for sale, etc. Whispering Cairn was one of my favorite adventures of all time. I would love to see something like that expanded into a 6 part AP.

Whatever future AP Paizo does, i hope at one point to see Absalom at least in one of the books. I don't recall Absalom even in any past APs. As a matter of fact, i can't think of any modules based around Absalom either. I think there's a society adventure that focuses on it, but that's about it. One would think that Golarion's largest city would be featured somewhere in an AP.

There are _tons_ of Pathfinder Society scenarios set in and around Absalom. It's also the site of our early 3.5 adventures The Hangman's Noose and Gallery of Evil. I think an Absalom AP is inevitable, but such a thing would probably require something super-awesome like a hardcover Absalom sourcebook, and you know how long something like that might take to put together...

Honestly it should be a mix of Kingmaker + Serpent's Skull + Savage Tide - BUT! It should really embrace Pirate movies, history and literature.

Treasure Island and Monkey Island.

Ship to Ship combat!

Wenches!

Voodoo curses, and hidden temples to ancient and primal volcano gods.

Horrible things rising up from the depths of the sea!

Did I mention the wenches?

How about an AP with the theme of revenge

Part 1 has the PC's humiliated (and possibly even killed) by a group of 5 bad types.
Each of parts 2-6 deal with the PC's getting revenge on one of the bad guys.

Season with plot twists as required.

Awesome. Sounds like Kill Bill. Death List 5!

ALL OF THE ABOVE!

And more wenches.

And an extra plus for "So, what happened to Aroden" Epic (yep EPIC!) AP.

Either Numeria or a planar ap.

Her Majesty's Expeditionary (or whatever it was called), the guys with Paracount Juliastar.

Something where those guys (updated to the new system) are involved as constant foes in an adventure path.

You could have some "backup" guys ready to plug in if some of them get knocked off in the early parts.

As far as areas, I'd really like to see Nirmathas, Nex, Lastwall, and Galt.

For some reason those areas grab my attention. Maybe Molthune too, they are pretty bland but maybe one part of the adventure path could be with dealing with a full fledged incursion into Nirmathas by Molthune.

Ah. Very nice. And that would be a book I'd be very happy to buy, too.

I would love an AP that takes place after the usual big bad plot or event has happened. Then have a group of new heroes tasked with sorting out the mess and perhaps even given a chance at reversing the initial ill fortune.

A straight up war AP between two nations would be fantastic. I would enjoy following the exploits of a group of heroes and whether or not the events of the adventure path would see them on the same side that they began on. It would be a great way to weave in some mass combat, kingdom building/destroying, political intrigue, seige combat and some open ended choices here and there that can change who the BBEG's are (via faction points or some such).

I think a classic artifact AP would be good. The PC's find themselves in possession of a very important maguffin and it should be frightening to use and even worse to lose. Not exactly new territory by any means, but if done right this type of thing can be quite fun without simply being LotR and I have little doubt that the Paizo crew would leave quite a lasting impression.

Seafaring AP (Pirates or vikings)

Heroic AP - Something not grim, not dark, no grey morality

War AP - The PC'S start as soldieres or army scouts and work their way up to leaders

dwarf-centered AP (history of the 5 king mountains)

around, on and in lake encarthan

The one experimental, one normal AP formula seems like something they're moving away from, but I have a guess for the experiment they're unsure about. Every so often, the editorial types talk about how you don't actually need a balanced party, as long as the players change their tactics. So I'll guess an AP set in Rahadoum, as the Mana Wastes is too small.

I'd also like a sword & planet AP. I'm less into the pirate vibe.

Erik Mona wrote:

Would definately buy this book, and the subsequent AP that goes with it, I cant wait for the Greyhawk City/Waterdeep of Golarion to get more fleshed out and detailed.

Nom Nom Nom...yummy lore...Nom Nom Nom

Also for possible future ideas, to reiterate what I said in another thread similar to this a while back, newly updated and balanced epic level rules, coinciding with an AP that takes the PC's through the Test of the Starstone, also possibly tying into the mystery and revelation of the death/disappearence of Aroden.

1. Mercenaries. Source material: Bladestorm. The party hires themselves out.
Possible Location: Mercenaries at the Worldwound? Interact with the Paladins, etc.; More likely: Mercenaries in the River Kingdoms, being hired by different houses and interacting with different factions and warring with different factions.
Benefits: Sandboxy like Kingmaker; Faction Rules like Serpents Skull

2. Sid Meier's Pirates! . As stated by the others, a sandbox game where the players are privateers in the middle of a war or something of the sort; the hook is that the story takes the master and commander players on an around the world in 80 days chase of a great white whale of a target through caribbean-like waters to the cold barren north, while there is mutiny on the bountiful ship.

Taking prize ships would be an important part of this, as would battles on galleons. There would also have to be more interesting types of vessels, like plant vessels (to interest the druids).

First post in ages but I've been toying with some ideas for a home-brewed Golarion AP that paizo would do much better than I could.

1. Pirates: for all of the reasons mentioned above, though to my mind Savage Tide had a really good balance of ship based and more exotic adventure sites. I'd also love to see the moral ambiguity of piracy played up, yes it has swash buckling and daring do but at the end of the day it is still robbery, murder and perhaps even slavery. Had an idea for doing a campaign where they are recruited by a charismatic pirate captain who begins heroically raiding Chelish or Nidalese ships and fighting their navy but his leadership slowly turns darker as they resort to raiding and slaughtering unprotected towns and taking slaves from Andoran, eventually driving the PCs to create their own fleet to stop the monster they once served.

2. Sword and Planet: Golarion has such a great solar system exploring any of the planets would make for a great AP though I'd want it to only visit maybe a couple of planets as otherwise it could feel a bit disjointed. Personally as a fan of John Carter of Mars I think Akiton would be the coolest planet to visit, maybe get an accompanying Pathfinder Chronicles book, perhaps even a multi-planet hard cover (though I do understand how much work that would take).

3. Mana Wastes: something similar to what Sgmendez suggested earlier, sandwiched between two magical superpowers a lone city where technology thrives is a hell of a cool setting for an AP.

4. Vikings: An AP set around the frozen north primarily the Land of the Linnorm Kings and Irrisen would have so much scope for epic adventure. I also really liked the idea of an Island hoping campaign accompanying a Linnorm king on their way to Arcadia.

5. Osirion: An AP focusing on tomb raiding and uncovering the fascinating ancient history of the country, plenty of pulp-y style exploration, competition with other adventurers, traps aplenty and ancient curses. Basically an AP length version of Entombed with the Pharaohs which is still one of my all time favourite Pathfinder Modules.

6. Numeria: It seems like Numeria has so many opportunities for a unique AP although I'd be a bit worried about it becoming too sci-fi (was not a big fan of the giant robot scorpion in The Inner Sea World Guide as it just looks way too modern/transformer like).

To be honest I'm pretty sure Paizo will do a great job with whatever they do, so far I have not been disappointed with any of the APs, my favourite probably being Legacy of Fire just for the sheer amount of exotic adventuring.

I'd love to see an AP where the PC's are thrown into a huge war. Be it between good verse evil or nations. It could be 2 two factions or several forces. I want the PCs to be a small force, going through a huge army taking out key personel. Political missions, sabotage, rousing internal rebellious groups. So many options, It could part sandbox part railroad. I;ve thought about it for a decent time lately, so many ideas to expand on.

Personally, a Worldwound AP would be fantastically grand in scale and fun. It would have to be particularly intense to pull off well but the pay-off would be worth it.

I see the idea of a "War" AP tossed around and was thinking it would be a natural fit for Lastwall. The nation is particularly interesting and it would be easy enough to be stuck in a quagmire between orcish hordes from Belkzen and undead legions from Ustlav. Of course, Ustlav is about to get it's own AP so that may have to wait for a while. Heck, you could even include some political intrigue with getting allies from Nirmathas or even some of the rival hordes of orcs.

To my knowledge, orcs haven't been figured prominently in any AP so it would be fun to see them. They may be a bit too generic of a villain but I'd like to see an AP feature them at least for a while like goblins, drow, gnolls, kobolds, and serpentfolk have gotten. Edit: These have all been done well, and I'd like to see Paizo's treatment of the race as a foe.

I quite like Vikings, but vikings are not pirates.

Pirates get more willing wenches.

So I vote proper pirates.

Then later on, get me some Vikings!

+1 for War-themed AP.

+1 for Viking-themed AP.

Big "Hell No" for Alkenstar/Mana Wastes, though. If the feedback I recieved in earlier threads for suggesting an Arcane-themed and Religious-themed AP apply (limits character selection, limits character choices, etc.), then they equally apply to the nerfing of arcane casters in that area.

Additionally, I still don't like guns in Golarion, so I certainly don't want to see an entire AP's worth of guns.

While Jade Regent doesn't sound like my typical cup of tea, I'm intrigued enough to wait and see an installment or two before deciding. An Alkenstar AP, however, would likely trigger a cancellation/suspension of my AP subscription until that one was in the bag.

If only I were a hydra, all my heads would be in agreement on this.

One more weigh-in on a possible pirate AP, although it would apply equally to a War-themed AP.

GROUND IT FIRMLY IN GOLARION LORE.

That means, make it internally consistent with the setting.

It's established that firearms are rare (Alkenstar excluded) and that magic is preferred by a wide margin.

That said:

I don't want to see 17th-century sailing ships loaded with canons while ground warfare is dominated by footsoldiers, archers, and mounted cavalry!!! I don't want naval battles dominated by cannons anymore than I want castles, swords, plate armor, mounted knights, and vikings rendered useless.

Piracy has existed as long as ships have. I'm ok with having more advanced sailing ships, but realize that is sailing tech is going to jump to the 17th century equivalent, doing so will be shooting those precious Viking-ships and other rowed vessels in the head. At point blank range. With a large bore handgun.

While I love Pirates of the Carribean, that's not Golarion.

And yes, I know you can have guns and gunpowder exist in limited fashion without derailing a game. But this definitely starts steering into Campaign-Altering Elements territory.

I'm not asking for medieval naval simulation. I'm just asking for Golarion fantasy (which is slanted more towards medieval/early-Renaissance than 17th-Century Age of Sail) consistency.

What if it was a Geb/Nex AP where in one issue you traveled through the Mana Wastes?

Justin Franklin wrote:

From a purely selfish standpoint, I'm not interested.

From a more objective standpoint, I'd rather see Paizo test the waters for Mana Waste demand with Pathfinder Society adventures or a Pathfinder Module as a test bed. Depending on how well/poorly that sold, you'd have a better idea on how popular such content would be in an AP.

APs are just too large an investment in resources. It's for that reason that I can appreciate the need to have APs appeal to the largest crowd possible, even if that means my personal wish list doesn't get fulfilled.
I'm an AP subscriber not only for the APs themselves, but also for the Golarion lore. Honestly, while I'm gaming more than in recent years, I'm not gaming enough that I can burn through an AP in 6-12 mos. While Paizo grabs an increasing amount of my disposable income every month, my AP subscription would be suspended/cancelled until such time as the gun-heavy AP was done. I just can't justify spending the money on something that I know I have no interest in when there's plenty I haven't had a chance to get to yet.

While I expect Jade Regent to be popular, I also view it as a bigger creative risk than say, Kingmaker's sandbox approach. That's just my gut and maybe I'm dead wrong. However, based on the UC playtest posts, I don't think the "no guns" camp of the Paizo customer base is a small one.

YMMV.

I played in a campaign once where the PCs were part of a mercenary company of about 100 or so members. They were known as a "good" organization and generally took the high ground. They had been involved in a few wars in the past, always siding against the nation trying to force their will upon the other.

We got involved in a war between nations. We started out as our own force, usually spearheading minor battles with the front line troops. As we gained levels we progressed until at higher levels we were assigned to the king by our superiors. We became an elite strike force, taking out the enemies generals, lead bad gys, etc.

It was easily one of the best campaigns I've ever had the pleasure of playing in. I'd highly recommend an AP that covered this area of a game.

Sovereign Court

The more I think about it though, I think an AP with a war theme would be insanely difficult to pull off. In order to have the plot rolling in the right directions the PCs would have to win pretty much all the battles. I just seeing the war campaign more of a DM modifiying it after every session to keep the campaign on track!

Not if the AP takes a "battle" approach vs. "war" approach to the individual AP installments. You could also have installments moving to different fronts/campaigns in the war, where the outcome of a previous installment is not directly dependent.

Actually, as I think about it, it would be very interesting to see a mechanic like Council of Thieves' Fame Points used. Individual missions within an AP installment wouldn't have to focus solely on the large scale conflicts. However, if each installment did have mass combat scenarios, you could use a "War Points/Victory Points" system to reflect the ebb and flow of the battles through the AP. Victory in issue #1 lends additional benefits to the forces fielded in issue #2. Defeat in issue #2 results in fighting from a disadvantage in issue #3.

Assuming the PCs have to focus on intrigue and special forces style missions, you could have many possible campaign outcomes. The PCs might succeed in slaying the opposing general or rule but their nation still suffers defeat, or the reverse, or either end of the spectrum (total victory, total defeat).

Damn, the more I think about this, the more I like it. Give me a War-themed AP now!!

Sovereign Court

James Jacobs has already written an excellent war AP (Red Hand of Doom) so it can be done.

I'm all for Irresen, Linnorm Kings and Mammoth Lords. I want an AP that's designed for that section of the world. Cold forests, snow, ice, cold, mammoths, linnorms; things that would be completely awesome to be a barbarian, ranger, fighter type in.

Basically Erik Mona could remember winter when he was a kid and turn that into an AP. That'd be for me.

I would like something that has the fell of the old 1st edition adeventure to the Barrier Peaks

Something with frozen lands, uninhabitable north, mammoths, crevasses, ice trolls and white dragons. A barren place a horizon walker might actually be useful.

And something Journey to the center of the earth erm, darklands, where the PCs cannot get back where they came from and have to travel deep and far to return to the surface.

Planar travel, journey to legendary DnD locations, The city of Brass (legacy of fire didnt do this enough), Asomdeus's plane of hell, midgard....etc I could see this in tandem with the whole scavenger hunt to collect components for someone unknown magical device, only to find out you need to stop the madman you were unwittingly working for.

1. Seconding(or is that fifty-seconding?) the Megadungeon AP suggestion.

2. I'd also like to see 2 or 3 Short APs. These would be 3 issue APs covering perhaps level 1 through 10. I see alot of people talking about *starting* APs, but not many about about *finishing* them - 6 issue, 18-20 level APs can obviously take a long time to complete. A few shorter ones would be nice, cover more manageable character levels, more diverse themes, more campaign setting regions, and be finishable in a shorter period of time.

+1 on the Megadungeon AP. It would be really nice to see Paizo's take on this.

I'd also love to see a city-focused Absalom campaign, but it needs an absalom city book, and it needs to be more in the vein of ptolus, and less like any city book WoTC ever put out. With a big, detailed map like Ptolus had.

James has said a number of times that they'll never do a "short" AP because the act of spinning up an AP itself is a huge undertaking (moreso than just cranking out the books that make it up).

If you want to go for the idea of short APs, why not check out the linked module line? These are modules that have the same locations/NPCs/plot continued from one to the next, and give much of the AP "feel." There's the Falcon's Hollow series, the City of Golden Death series, the Pyramid series, the Last Baron series, etc. Many of which are quite good.

1. Alright I'm going to have to jump on the bandwagon too, pirates, yeah that would rock. A good Ole Errol Flynn, swashbuckling, swing in on a rope and save the girl (or guy, whatever) adventure. And it would be a good way to showcase some of the new classes because pirates rock, ninjas rock, pirates AND ninjas, rock the house man. It could also give the gunslinger a boost, get all the gunpowder haters to back off the vitriol a little because pirates isn't pirates without cannonade broadsides and a brace of pistols in your belt, I don't care WHAT you say, and ya'll know I'm right.

2. A well written massive dungeon crawl would be excellent, maps, maps and more maps, man I love maps. A chance to really explore your underdark. Maybe your own mines of Moria or Mithral Hall, with the adventurers helping to reestablish an ancient dwarvish kingdom or some such, yeah that would be pretty cool too.

3. All the new planar critters in the B2 plus the great start you got in the Beastiary have had me increasingly chomping at the bit for something that would allow me to interact with all those neat beasties, most of whom have almost no place in the average campaign. Frankly a game where both they and all the templates are almost commonplace would be great. Plus, I love the idea of all the exotic locales that the characters would be exposed to. It would be a great locale not only to adventure but to base characters in.

Every time I read through runelords, I always think it would be cool to play a campaign which takes place in Thassilonia.

Or an AP where the heroes unwittingly help create the seven swords of sin.

much to my surprise there has been no support for an Osirion based AP. So here is mine. An AP involving any OTHER Pharaoh than the Pharaohs of Ascension or whatever they are called. There were LOTS of others as well, and learning something else would be sweet. An exploration of ruins and nomad cultures.

Land of the Linnorn Kings. And that means there MUST be a Linnorn somewhere in the AP. Now that wold be an epic fight!

Return to Varisia would be nice at sometime.

An Absalom based AP.

World Wound is interesting but I have my own ideas for that one, and don't want "official" material screwing me up. :)

I their be PIRATES AND MONSTERS HERE!:) I would like to see one done like the Slavelords of OLD. Half land and Half Sea AP. Plus maybe some underwater encounters also. It could take place in and around the Shackles area. I would also like to see a Northern AP, it is all set in the Lands of the Linnorm Kings, Irrisen, Realm of the Mammoth Lords and the World Wound. Incompasses all of thise areas. Item found that could possibly close the World Wound. PC'S have to travel across all of those lands and encounters, plus including those who want it for themselves or demons that wish to kill them and take the item for themselves!

Liberty's Edge

There is an Absalom based AP already out there, it is called Pathfinder Society.

Shadow Lodge

Let us see a full on war with the orcs of the Hold of Belkzen! An enigmatic warlord has succeeded in uniting the clans and blood and death is on the horizon. Get those dwarves off the shelf, dust them off, and give them a starring role in an AP for once. Have the party infiltrate the Orc command with magical disguises to learn that there is more going on than meets the eye. The orcs are being used as a tool and the most powerful factions in Golarion are lining up on either side to determine the future of civilization.

And the naysayers said that the AP format would run out of steam sooner rather than later for lack of original ideas to keep it fresh. Heck, just with the good ideas in this thread, we could be on Pathfinder #300 and going strong! :) And you guys haven't even come close to touching on two experimental APs that I have had a hankering to see done some day. Yeah, APs are going to be around for a long, long time, and this GM is happy to see that. I just wish my group played more often so we could get through them quicker. Oh well, I would rather have an abundance of riches...

Clockworks in some shape or form, even if it's just a module.
