It's lonely around here without my followers. I don't even have an owlbear to cuddle with.

Maybe being nekkid will help me find some company.

Good morning, everyone. Today is my mother's birthday. She turns seventy.

Happy Birthday to your mom!

And then we had to decide what we were going to play next. In the end, I volunteered to run Giant Slayers. Now I'm starting to freak out a little. It's been close to 6 years since I ran a Pathfinder game, and I've never used an adventure path so I don't really know what to expect. I'm sure it will be fine, but on top of that they agreed to let me run a one-shot in a different RPG (which only I have read) that uses a system none of us have ever played in (a variant on the FATE system). I think it should go ok, but who knows? I need to put the finishing touches on the adventure since we start next week.

Good luck!

Happy birthday, John's mom!

She said "Thank you very much." She laughed when I told her to be prepared for a flood of birthday wishes from people she doesn't know.

So, what does it say about my faith in government computer systems when I work for a global megacorporation that supplies them, yet I don't believe the "Jury Duty" web site when it tells me I'm just "on call" and I don't have to show up.

So I go to a web site. I put in my juror information. It says, "You don't have to come in this morning. Check in again at noon."
And I don't believe it and worry that I'm going to end up with a contempt ticket.

Says a LOT about government computer systems right there, it does.

From you, wouldn't that be a "low 5"... just about tail level, I'd presume?

Aaaaand, according to the web site, no jury duty for me this year! Woo hoo!

Minor political tirade:
I would really honestly like jury duty, if the system weren't so utterly corrupt and broken. Instead of, "Call in 24 people just in case of unavoidable conflicts, keep 18, and wrap up the trial in 2 weeks or less", it's "Call in 200 people, dismiss most of them on the flimsiest of grounds, let the attorneys dismiss others on a whim, waste everybody's time, and then have a 6-8 week circus with 'expert witnesses' from all over the map just to totally confuse the issue. Oh, and while employers can't fire you for jury duty, they sure as heck don't have to pay you."

Yes, I've known attorneys. Their quotes are quite memorable.

  • "It has nothing to do with 'right and wrong', it has to do with what is actually written, and how I can interpret it in the best possible way for my client."
  • "The truth doesn't matter. I have to do everything I can to create an outcome beneficial to my client."
  • Attorneys and Lawful people don't get along well.

I'll never forget my first call to jury duty as a math professor. My colleagues said, "Don't sweat it. They'll ask you your occupation, you'll say, 'Math professor', and the attorney with the weaker case will immediately dismiss you. None of us have ever served."

    So...
    - No discretionary "without prejudice" dismissals
    - Pay jurors what they would have made at their jobs
    - No 'expert witnesses'

Trials would go a LOT faster, and the whole legal system would improve dramatically. In my opinion, of course.

    Today is a weird day.

I walked the dog, just finished most of the dishes, I responded to family emails, and Tiny T-Rex has already been off and back to his friend's house.

Yet, I don't really feel like I've done anything and it's making me feel tense for whatever reason.

    Weird.

Oh! No, not in person! Sorry! I didn't mean to give that impression.

(And I kind of thought your "We met" was a joke based off of not recognizing me, due to not having been here for so long.)

I just meant it's good seeing you now, as in, here on the boards.

I'm probably going to have to wear a nametag that actually says, "Tacticslion" or something if I ever go to any convention where there might be FaWtLians!

(But for the record, I'll probably - unless I lose enough weight - look like a fat white guy with brown hair.)
