Hmmm... I have never played Final Fantasy. So I can't say who anyone would be... not even myself.

FF6 is the one that starts out with the main protagonist - Terra Branford, green-haired magic user and tank pilot - starting out amnesiac and on the run. She could be kinda moody from time to time, but got over that by the end of the first third of the game or so thankfully.

She wasn't the one who ended up sacrificing herself, that was Aeris/Aerith Gainsborough in FF7.

Why can't a man sacrifice himself so a woman can complete the mission? Why must it always be the woman?!

Eeeep... quick someone pick a costume for me to put on... it's too cold for nakedness.

FF9 actually does this. The thief Blank allows himself to get stuck in a forest that's turning to stone so Princess Garnet, the party's healer and driving force of the first part of the game's plot, can make it to her uncle in the next city.

Annoyingly this is right after she gets out of a damsel-in-distress situation where Blank and a couple of other party members had to go rescue her, but it's one of fairly few in that game's plot. Garnet is definitely one of the more proactive female characters in Final Fantasy.

Orthos is Banon! Who secretly is Gogo (you never find out what happened to Banon)

Aranna is Celes (a mage knight general - your security background kinda fits that)

Freehold is clearly Edgar, after that don't wanna be right story.

Tac is...is...a tough one. Um. Sabin?

I am 100% okay with being Gogo (for the uninitiated: a jack-of-all-trades character whose special ability allows him/her to copy the last move someone else used for no cost).

Though I've always been a bigger fan of the "Daryl is Gogo" theory than the "Banon is Gogo" one.

(More for the uninitiated: Daryl is a badass airship pilot who disappeared Amelia Earhart style prior to the game; Banon is a rebel leader with some healing abilities who's super important to the first bit of the plot then vanishes completely without a trace.)

Uh, orthos, without Celes there is not half of FF6 - Proactive chick!

Yeah FF7 is the big favorite that the vast majority of the playerbase loves. FF fans are usually split into two groups - the ones who like the old NES/SNES games, who usually consider FF6 to be the best, and the ones who like the PS1 and PS2 games more, who typically consider FF7 to be the best. I'm very strongly in the first group, myself.

There's some smaller groups, such as the FF8 and 9 fans (admittedly, 9 is my second-favorite) and the fans who prefer the newer games - 12 and beyond - or the MMO fans who liked 11/like 14. But they're all far smaller than the first two groups.

Maybe I could GM a campaign loosely based on FFVI?

I'd play. Obviously some stuff would need to be slightly different, plotwise and character-wise, but I love the setting and would definitely consider it worth giving a shot =)

Me too. I think it would be probably the only way I'd get into tech.

I think rebuilding the world post-downfall of Kefka would be cool. The power vacuum would create all kinds of problems.

More one-liners that Arnold Schwarzenegger and James Bond combined.

Trying to follow a conversation about a game I've never played is kinda trippy. :)

FF6 Spoilers:
As would the death of magic. I'd have my own theories of why/how it could return, but I think it could be cool to start the campaign in a no-magic setting then have the magic start to return/revive somehow.

Alternatively leaving the world as magic-dead could be a way you could go about it... but I imagine that'd be a bit trickier to do with Pathfinder mechanics.

Also there'd be the question of if you'd want the players playing original characters or picking up the roles of the PCs from the game. Either has good potential IMO.

If you run this, I will come. I'd rather do up n' comers in a world where magic is just coming back after, say, a generation or so.

And I just set my ringtone to the opening theme for Marathon 2: Durandal.

Best.
Ringtone.
Ever.

For those unfamiliar with the Marathon universe, here's some art from the game. Not that the game looked like this; this is concept and loading screen art. There's nothing quite like seeing the temple load screen and knowing what's coming next.

Use GRUPS. It works for everything. Granted it is a pain in the ass to set up a character, but you could easily play a magic dead game.

If you want to be the least useful character, aside from grinding out all of Strago's blue magic, well, that's your prerogative.

Ugh, I hated her.

This also might explain my limited memory of all Final Fantasy games, and which ones they might be.

Dude, Relm is badass. Sure Sketch is pretty meh, but her magic score is the highest in the entire party. She is an AMAZING caster.

Post-game she certainly has plenty of people to learn other skills from, as well.

The trick would be either finding a group of players who already know the system, or spending time teaching them.

I used to hate it, but it was explained to me pretty well. Character generation takes - FOREVER - but it's classless, which I like.

Mechanically, it's like an inverted d20 system. You roll I think 3d6, subtract modifiers, and try to get LESS than the DC. As far as I can tell that's the main mechanic, similarly to the roll 1d20, add modifier, try to get higher. You really don't want a classed system for Final Fantasy.

GURPS is the only system with an official licensed (actually two) Discworld source book.

Now THAT I could get into as a player. I'd be the first Feegle wizard. I think they'd enjoy wizardry, what with the eating, and the drinking, and the murdering without magic your way into promotion.

We have a Power Wheels dump truck.

It has a sticker right in front, big letters, it says "Non working display model, Do not sell"

It was sold and returned 4 times in the last week.

It's now in the warehouse with a note "junk" displayed prominently, as it sits, waiting to be returned to it's manufacturer.

The trick would be either finding a group of players who already know the system, or spending time teaching them.

The system itself in GURPS isn't very difficult. Character creation does take time, and you need the rule books to flip through while doing so, so don't put everyone in one character creation session, or all but one will be bored. The basics are:

Set out four stats, paid by points.
Get advantages, paid by points.
Get disadvantages, which get you points.
Buy skills, which gets you a skill level equal to a modifier from a certain stat. The idea is: 1 point gets you <stat> + 1 for a certain difficulty of skill. More points gets you a higher level, and difficult skills cost more.
Get equipment.

It is laid out in a very modular way. If you feel that various modifiers are too complicated, you can ignore entire subsystems without problems. You can choose any level of it from very simple and cinematic to extremely complex and realistic. It makes for a simple learning curve.

As to gameplay itself, it is based on 3d6. Mastery is gained in understanding and focusing on a variety of modifiers, which mean more with 3d6 than 1d20.

Oh... and there is a rule for sodding anything. Believe me. =)

I want to hit him in the spleen! From the back. Through the chink in his armor. With the tip of my broadsword. I'll make it an all-out attack to get +2 to damage.

Also, I'll make it a deceptive attack at -4 so he'll get extra -2 to eventual Dodge.
