Ke$ha was, at one point, part of the LA punk scene. Later, she decided to send a demo CD to BMI, which included a variety of genres of music, including an intentionally terrible parody of modern radio hip-hop. No one at BMI got the joke, and, thinking the track was pure genius, BMI signed her. After being signed, Ke$ha decided that she liked getting paid for basically just screwing around in a recording booth and acting like a jackass. The jury's out as to whether or not she's started believing her own act.
I still remember the Beastie Boys being a really pretty crappy punk band until they released a "parody" rap song...
And then they became a pretty crappy rap band. Seriously.
Gotta disagree there, love the Beastie Boys.

I like most of their stuff.

To each their own. I found their writing mediocre and their beats uninspiring. Nothing wrong with other people liking it, but I personally think they really only made it because of their novelty.

I like Nicki Minaj for all the right (wrong?) reasons. Or one reason in particular.

The stuff I listen to for fun doesn't bear thinking about. I studied jazz at college and it's ruined me for life.

studying something as infinite as music and thereby attempting to classify or calcify and thereby hold one system over another it seems to be a recipe for madness. I have never known a sane music teacher, but there are untold sounds I never would have been exposed to without them.

Why this world cannot wrap it's collective mind around people liking some things and not liking others is beyond me. Then again, conflict seems to an integral part of the human experience.

Hum. I'm not sure studying music calcifies it, any more than studying, say, history somehow limits it or prevents it developing; apologies if that wasn't you meant.

Can't speak for anywhere else, but they went out of their way at our place to encourage you to investigate other genres and explore how they influenced and developed alongside each other. But yes, the staff (and pupils) were often pretty weird (hi!)

EDIT: History probably wasn't the best example. Whoops...

Yeah, I gotta say that from a personal experience, I discovered a lot more music when I actively investigated and analysed the stuff I liked than I do at the moment (hooking up the stereo to the TV was a bad idea, since it turns out I did most of my music listening on the bed).

If it makes you feel better I haven't made a weapon out it, I hold it close when I sleep. :-)

Oh, no. If I could have dual-wielded, I'd have Rawr's Fist in one hand and a Superheated Saturnite Fist in the other, and I'd give big hugs to all my enemies.

Or this

I've heard snippets about it. I haven't mustered the courage to go back and finish the fight yet.

I liked it. A lot. I thought it was a good story and despite delving into a much more serious plot they kept the humor that made the show great from the beginning.

If you're converting that much, you might as well use a different system while you're at it. Pathfinder is pretty terrible for low magic gritty games. nWoD core would be my first bet, or possibly Savage Worlds, because that system is awesome and works for anything low power.

Pathfinder is great, but low power or the feel of GoT is not what it is. I didn't say this in the thread itself because it didn't seem to be what you asked, really...but if you want to explore that avenue I can meet you there.

At our favorite Italian place.

Garlic cheesy bread.
Stuffed shells Alfredo.
Fried calamari.
Calzone.
Pasta with meat sauce.

I can eat none of it, because, due to traffic, and reticent children, we arrived three minutes before five, and I can't eat "carb dishes"... :l

Can't you just stay awake an hour later? Isn't the point X hours before bed, not an arbitrary position of the sun?

On the plus side, I got a lift into town from HEMA, which means an extended stay in the pub before train home.

Balancing that, dry roasted peanuts and stout taste disgusting together. AND STOP REMIXING 90s DANCE CLASSICS, YOU BEASTS! Those songs were bad enough first time around...

This year will mark the first year I haven't had to work on Christmas since 2008. I don't know what I'm going to do with myself. Start drinking before it gets dark, maybe? I have no idea.

This, on the other hand.

A Henry Rollins reference right next to an ABBA reference? I've got the perfect song for this moment...

Last night I dreamed we took Henry to a disco
And at first he was very very angry
Then he went up to the DJ and said "play some ABBA, dude!"
And he raised his tattooed fist to "Dancing Queen"

He was pretty good in that movie he had a cameo in.

Next time, I buy Barefoot. I like Barefoot. I don't know how they sell it so cheap when the taste is so, well, not bad, especially for under $6. And I have three Ghirardelli bars in my room. Could have had this bomb. Still good and drunk, at least.

Only five more days until my Star Wars showtime. Reviews are out. So overwhelmingly positive, it's sent my excitement through the roof. I hear Disney did an amazing job at capturing the spirit of the old movies.

Watching Star Wars: The Clone Wars on Netflix. This is some heavy stuff for a kids cartoon. We got actual discussion nf the ethics of using a slave army, people getting lit on fire and flailing around screaming before dying, wounded seperatists getting put out of their misery so they don't burn like the aforementioned poor bastards, good guys getting killed all over the place, people getting cut in half, and more.

It is a very good show. It does get dark and you see Anakin slipping down the dark path ever so slowly. I own all but the last season on DVD.

Interesting morning...

  • I took Nyquil last night so I woke up with fuzzy Nyquil brain. When the scale said 179.6, dropping me into the 170's for the first time since 1999, my brain could not process this information. I checked to scale to see what was preventing it from registering my correct weight. I banged on it a couple of times. Nope. Everything was OK. I'm down into the 170's.
  • Jury duty today. I can't talk about the jury selection process without going far, far too far beyond the "no politics on FaWtL" rule, so I'll just say that I am displeased...
