Hey, NH, quick question: I'm trying to get a rough guesstimation for 4^290 power - approximately (emphasis on approximately) how much would that be, if it were expressed in words?

Presuppose I've forgotten, oh, everything I've ever learned in math. Well, at least Calculus. More specifically, this means nothing to me, right now, and my attempts to refresh myself on the notation have yielded more or less nothing.

EDIT: I mean, now that it may actually be on the table,
I'm really curious how close I am to accidentally creating Chuck Norris...

math is pain.

The only way around it is to not do math.

hands tactics a final fantasy tactics artbook

There you go.

You know, that is something that might actually work... XD

So, the quick-n-easy guesstimate way is, 2^10 ~ 1000 = 10^3.

So 4^290 = 2^580 ~ 10^174.

Since the current estimate of "number of atoms in the universe" stands at something like 10^92, we're far beyond worrying about planets-n-such; this being wouldn't even notice bench pressing the universe.

All subsequent calculations are ludicrous.

Yeah, as soon as I realized we were discussing multiples of googol, I kind of stopped worrying about how big the final number would be...

OK, being a pedant, I looked it up, and the CURRENT estimate of atoms in the universe is between 10^78 and 10^82.

So I was off by a factor of a trillion. Sue me.

Do not, in fact, actually go for it.

Oh, and last night we started "Knights of Sidonia", and it's an utterly by-the-book, totally predictable gundam anime. You can quite literally predict major events at least an episode before they happen.

And yeah, we're loving it.

If you really want to feel old, take the latest survey.

There have been... one or two complaints that the age category maxes out at 25+.

(And yeah, more than anything else, you start feeling old when every survey seems to cap out well below your age. Or maybe I just love doing age-inappropriate stuff...)

THANK YOU, NH, DANG IT!!

Forrest Gump - that's really the only one that still gets me, though the Keanu Reaves one is pretty funny, actually, and none of those are bad things.

What really "proves" I've been an adult, though, is how short the last decade seems, relatively.

I get annoyed at surveys wanting to know how much t.v. I watch or books I read.

I might not read 3 books a day like some people, but I read quite a bit, it's just news websites, 538, science journals or unicorn hair tutorials.

And it's not my fault t.v. is so f%&+ing awesome these days.

My actual working schedule+ duties+ drawing' writing had kept me away from reading the last month... So ashamed.

And the "Parking Wars" took an even more surreal turn this morning:

I was all set to head off to Costco in the Celica, which is in the precious, precious parking space. As I started the car, the brown minivan, bane of our weekend existence, pulled up and started waiting for me to pull out.

All perfectly reasonable... except for the fact that their driveway, the space in front of their house, AND the space in front of the next house were ALL open!

In other words, the driver was willing to wait for me to move just to take "my" parking space, in spite of the fact that there was parking in front of HER house right there!

So, being a "mature adult" (HA!) I decided to wait her out. We sat there for 2 minutes solid. I decided that enough was enough and got out of the car. She shifted into reverse and backed up the entire length of the block to avoid talking to me.

Then went back to waiting for me to move.

So I took the Prius from the driveway. Problem solved.

But WTF? Does our parking place emit killer Feng Shui or something?

We're at Fairyland.
Hermione is on the mini Ferris wheel. She calls down to me, "Mama, I'm afraid the wood will rot and I will fall through!"
"Baby, you only take 1d6 of hit point damage for every ten feet you fall. You would totally survive that."
Other parents look at me like I'm odd.
I wonder why I don't have more friends.

Very fine game. It has some minor issues and is definitely too short but almost every quest has multiple solutions, and even alternate options.

Basically this one.

I mean, a the foot fall, on average, shouldn't even make your girl unconscious, while a twenty foot fall probably would (averaging out that 7 damage on a 1 HD young template commoner v. their typical 5 hp), but would be entirely unable to push her into enough negatives to die, and a simple take-10 on a Heal, especially if (no more than) three others take 10 on their Aid Another, should be more than enough to stabilize.

Don't get me wrong, I'd personally want join her in the mind-bending terror of hellish horror that is a Ferris wheel, but my weight would make said event even more likely, so instead of letting her hug me, I'll just stay on the ground... you know, like a responsible adult... yeah...
