True Memoirs of an International Assassin is pretty great so far.

It's darker and in some ways more realistic than I thought (though it's definitely not realistic), but still manages humorous well, while both reveling in the tropes it invokes and using them relatively well, while subverting them in a manner that is, itself, trope-y in modern television, but is also fun.

Plus, it plays with audience expectations/sense of reality enough to leave it vague as to what, exactly, is happening.

Netflix recommended that to me after I finished watching the current season of The Fall. I admit I am...skeptical.

I was, too. It's worth being skeptical of the adds.

I'm most of the way through and I still don't know how it's actually going to end.

That... isn't normal for me.

EDIT: To be clear, I can be fooled, and I do have ideas about where it might go. It's just good enough and layered enough that it's got more depth than the advertisement made it seem. It's very troperriffic, and clearly and thoroughly so. It projects where it's going in advance... but plays with it slightly in each case. In each case, it (in a very modern technique) veers slightly off course. I still think it's going to end where I'm guessing... but I'm guessing, is the point. My certainty is very low.

EDIT: the closer it gets to the end, the stronger and more heavy-handed it projects itself. But it still manages to be pretty awesome. :D

EDIT: That end credit music is amazing. Daggummit. A really good ending.
It is a comedy. For realsies it becomes more and more an affectionate parody as the film goes on.

EDIT: Quick question: anyone know why this is called a "Netflix Original Series" - because it's clearly a film. I mean, it could be a series, if it wants to be, but it is definitely (at present) a feature length film.

You should hug Sharoth too. You and Quark Blast started back into the whole side topic that led to that.

QB, being his usual self, started that, and was called on it, and then you dogpiled in, and then came here to gloat after Sharoth wanted it dropped.

It's not at all. It's one collaborative freewriting exercise. It follows a path, but that path is winding, and it does not have a cohesive story that it's aiming for.

The Dark Tower has Idris Elba vs. Matthew McConaughey. That's like they just found the two sexiest men they could and decided to have them fight. This movie is foxy boxing for women and gay men.

Ah, gotta love the hoops insurance companies place in front of you in the hopes of you just giving up.

Claim #1: Never got paid. Finally went to their online site. "We requested more information, you didn't send it."
As NobodysWife puts it, since they didn't send it by e-mail, snail mail, phone, or fax, their carrier pigeon must have been assailed by a hawk.

So I send them a message, and got back, "We need the provider's name, address, taxpayer ID, and all this other information you already sent in with the claim."

Sent in the formal form. They have pretended they didn't get it.

So I filed Claim #2: Same thing. 8 days in, they say, "Need more information."

So I called. "Oh, we need your provider to call in and give us your information. You can't give it to us. So no, unless SHE calls us, we're not going to pay YOU."

<obscenities deleted>

Fortunately, my provider has pledged to "do what it takes" to get me paid, so I think a half-hour phone call to an annoying bureaucracy is in her future...

I haven't BEEN on medical leave, and they seem to assume that I've been seeing some physician every day when I've BEEN WORKING! NH, I just *love* the stench of a bureaucracy in the morning, don't you?

I think one of the perks of figuring out you're completely straight early on in your life is that you can describe other members of your sex as attractive (or words to that effect) and not feel you have to add a disclaimer about not being gay.

Yeah; it's weird. Sexuality is not a binary/trinary/whatever thing, but a spectrum. And I am at the far, far, FAR right end of the spectrum. I like women. A LOT. And there is nothing remotely attractive about men to me. Honestly, I can't figure out how women find them attractive at all. I have to ask NobodysWife, "Is HE good-looking?" and I am amazingly bad at determining what is attractive in a male.

And as a result, I've never had any issues being around homosexuals, transgenders, pansexuals, transvestites, or whatever.

Seems like being secure in your own sexuality makes it far easier to be tolerant of others'.

(My father was a raging unapologetic homophobe, which does make me wonder... but I think that's starting to wander into political arenas best left untouched in FaWtL.)

Good luck!

Our worst story was when I was sick with a 103-degree fever and NobodysWife stopped by the post office to drop off a letter while driving me to the doctor.

While I was there for 5 minutes, unconscious and feverish in the car, we got a parking ticket!

NobodysWife looked around, and INSIDE A FRIGGING TREE was a "no parking on the 4th Thursday of every month" sign. She took a picture so she could contest it.

So she sent in the explanation and the picture, and they denied the protest and sent back a new picture with the tree trimmed to reveal the sign.

We were naive enough to let it go back then. These days, I'd grab a lawyer...
