I like pumpkin soup. Pumpkin in coffee is just weird to me. I tried running in Phoenix just for science but I found that the dry air made it rather hard for me to breathe(I get sniffles mighty quick) so I didn't get many wheres. I never have problems like that in SG.

To be fair, there's no actual pumpkin in it. It's a mixture of various spices that smells vaguely pumpkin-esque, and it may have other squashes, but there's almost always not real pumpkin.

Welcome to America. Where "natural flavoring" can be literally anything and companies get away with not labeling that stuff, because f~~+ health, we need to protect the secret chemicals of our corporate overlords.

Reminds me of a Dimitri Martin standup: "I read ingredients on a box and it said made with natural and artificial flavoring. Why not just say flavoring? I mean, is there a third kind of flavoring? Do we have supernatural flavoring?"

Possibly Political:
Speaking of corporate overlords, the whole "free market" notion of the all-wise, all-knowing, ever-vigilant consumer always pisses me off.

Today's episode? My pharmacy (again).

As I mentioned, the moment they had my phone number they took to robo-dialing me every single day to tell me to renew my prescription. To the point of a simple "Press 1 to automatically renew". When I started hanging up without even listening, the calls increased in frequency to 2-3 per day.
All this for a prescription I did not need renewed; I had the bottle to prove it.

So I ended up blocking the phone number of my pharmacy. That says something deep, dark, and stupid right there. "My pharmacy is so intrusive that I had to block their number."

They finally figured it out. Now I'm getting 2-3 e-mails a day, marked as "urgent", that I need to refill my prescription. That is still not even halfway used.

Considering the behavior of the U.S.'s newly-deregulated pharma industry (the deregulation was within the last 10 years, I believe), is it any wonder we're a nation of overmedicators?

Not as creepy as 'Every Breath You Take'

Only the opening to Firefly makes me shudder.

It also fills me with a craving to physically take the sky from people.

Good lord. I gave them a quick reading check (5 questions about the book, each of which we'd discussed in class) worth a fraction of their usual homework assignments. You'd think I'd told them their entire grade hinged on it.

Okay, so I agree with you about the pharmacy calls. They are super obnoxious. It’s definitely a problem. But the whole ‘nation of overmedicators’ thing? Please don’t. It’s a form of shaming and it is not okay. Trust me when I say that those of us who have to take lots of meds to function get enough of that kind of shaming already. And throwing us chronically ill folks under the bus takes away from your real point about how regulation would help at least curb the worst of what’s going on in the hellscape that is the American healthcare system. Which is desperately in need of fixing.

The kiddo does that too. I will usually just have him dictate the answers while I type when he brings those assignments home. He overthinks it when he has to write it down

Spoiler:
Yes, some people do actually need a lot of medication to function. An observation that the US is overmedicated does automatically not throw them under the bus. It merely observes that many doctors leap immediately to prescribing medication that may not actually be necessary in all cases rather than considering any alternatives, leading to what seems an overall cultural dependence on said medication. If the medication is actually necessary, there's nothing wrong with it being prescribed. But this is not always the case.

I sincerely doubt NH meant any offense in expressing frustration with this system.

Spoiler:
I think you are both right. People need access to AFFORDABLE medication more or less on demand and without stigma, however, our chain pharmacies don't see it that way. I have lost count of the times the pharmacy down the street has tried to weasel their way into providing meds for *everyone* in my program, including via friendly "free" flu shots for everyone, including the staff. They really dont understand why we dont respond positively to robodials promising meds that people dont take anymore will be made available(my program and the psychiatric program in the same building were the first in our larger organization to participate in a state program that had people taking the lowest possibly prescribed amount of medication with few to no increases in dosages and an eye towards making sure people took up to date/"modern"[not necessarily bleeding edge] meds to boot), or why we don't physically escort them to the pharmacy because we are so close. It isnt a matter over medication in my experience, it is greed on the part of the pharmacy.

No, while the milkmaids were out (homecoming weekend for the UW and all) it didn't stick around long enough to require shovelling.

Boo Berry is the best. And unnatural as everything. That is all.

(Fun exercise: define "unnatural" and make sure that you can't exclude something as a byproduct of humanity that doesn't needlessly specify humanity without also excluding octopi, beavers, spiders, various great apes, birds, and, generally speaking, any other tool-user or environment-alteration specialist. I'm sure it's possible. But it's humorously difficult. And, "stuff made by things that sweat" doesn't work, either...)
