I still have yet to see a Cornelius joke in my thread. Which is a shame, because I'm certain that there is some autocorrect gold in that. "Cornelius" for instance: pretty certain that doesn't appear there... oh, Autocorrect, you irascible car. Er "cad" - dang, touchy aren't we Mr. Auto car accident? Hm... yes, touchy indeed...

Oh, well played. *gets clothes back on*

There wasn't a fight, just a Captain Yesterday Facebook tirade. :-)

But, as I said, coffee has been had and reactions are much less... reactionary... visceral... Tom Cruise-y...

You know when's the worst time for writer's block to strike?

When your big game which everyone has huge expectations for is this Saturday, you can't even come up with a description for the starting gala, and you don't even have the Ultimate Intrigue hardcover with you to help stat out the social encounter.

Black Olives, Watercress and Arugula on a burger?

Madness I say!

I like red onions, thick cut bacon with a touch of sweet balsamic, unique mayo and blue cheese on mine.

My bravery is greatly exaggerated, I assure you.

Wow. This looks really different on the phone, when compared to the computer.

By "the last three" I meant (as baron rightly understood) numbers 3, 4, and 5 - but now that I can see more of them, I'm adding 13, mmmmmaaaayyyyybe 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 27, 38, and 40.

Most of the ones I'm leaving off look at least slightly good, but I'm excluding them expressly for the ingredients as-presented in how I feel about them currently (i.e. "I don't like that kind of bread." or "Meh, I don't feel like spicy peppers." or similar).

Daggum, I want a burger. Second time this week. Maybe a visit to five guys is in order...

(And that voice-over is epic.)

EDIt: speaking of Patrick Warburton...

My objection to Facebook can be summarized thusly:

  • Throughout my formative years, if someone wanted to contact me or socialize with me, they made the effort to get in touch. Whether by phone, by dropping by, or, in later years by e-mail or text
  • With the Facebook generation, the attitude is, "If I posted it on Facebook, that's good enough. All of my 'real' friends follow me on Facebook."
  • In other words, there is no longer an effort to reach out to people individually; it's a generic, "If you're my friend, you're following me on Facebook, so you'll know what's going on in my life. If you're not willing to put forth the effort to follow me on Facebook, you're not my friend."

It's a very different dynamic: If I want to be invited to my friend's party, *I* have to be following my friend on Facebook, and *I* have to be checking every day for updates, and *I* have to notice what my friend is doing.

Being old and crotchety, if my friends feel that reaching out to me personally when they want to interact with me is too much of an effort for them, then I really don't need them as friends.

(Yes, I still bother to actually e-mail, then text, then call people if I want them to show up to a social event. The horror!)

I never argued anyone had to use it.

And yet you were very dismissive of CY's right to not use the service in your earlier post:

    Quote:
So, basically you're saying everyone else voluntarily agreed on a common and easy means of communication that you arbitrarily refuse involvement in, and they all need to change because of it to accommodate your refusal?
    Quote:
Merely that it was not evil, and was simple.

The fact that terms and conditions are not secret in no way proves that facebook isn't evil.

(And before anyone say that evil needs to be proven: Facebook and Mr Zuckerberg tried to take away my rights by trying to convince Poland government and EU to change privacy rights we have).

Precisely my point. We have missed pregnancy announcements, baby showers, and housewarming parties simply because we were not tracking those people on Facebook, and then had them come to us quite offended that we had 'skipped out on their party' or 'not bothered to follow them'. It's very narcissistic, and more than a little irritating when people get upset with you for not knowing about an event they never told you about...

...and it's always, "But I posted it on Facebook! If you didn't know about it, it's YOUR fault!"

At my age, it's an attitude I can easily survive without.

Ok you clearly want better contact with your family and you hate Facebook which is what they are using to stay in touch. Pick a method YOU want to use, although in my case I call them on the phone. The phone is hard to ignore without being a jerk. Pick a time and call them regularly. At first they may be critical of you but don't let it bother you tell them "it is SO good to hear your voice. I really used to value when we talked more." Do not let them get under your skin. Maybe even reminisce about a good time from your childhood you shared with them. Enjoy some small talk and catch up with everything they are up to these days. Tell them they are free to call you any time and that it would please you to stay in touch. End the call on a happy note.

After a while they will start to value the times when you call and may even start to call you. Pretty soon you will know everything even before they get around to posting it on Facebook.

Oh and if they try to drag you to Facebook tell them you would much rather hear their voice.
