Where are LM and her family? Standing in an unshaded parking lot, waiting to march in the Dallas Pride parade.

It takes a d@$%ed good reason to get me out of my air conditioning.

carries air conditioner with super long extention cord behind LM and her family

Now that's a long extension cord, but I wouldn't use it around LM and her family. Or with an air conditioner, no matter how much I love Yuki no Onna.

It had to happen...
...Impus Major's been sick for a week now with a steady 101 fever. Two take-home COVID tests on Tuesday and Friday came back negative. GothBard, symptom-free and assured it wasn't COVID, socialized. Impus Major went to the doctor today. THEIR test (externally identical to ours, and using the same methods) came back positive. Apparently Omicron takes quite a while to manifest.

So now we're all getting tested to find out just how many people we need to notify.

Whee?

Crossing our fingers for GothBard!

And GothBard came back negative, both in attitude and in COVD tests.

The most infuriating thing for Impus Major? Not only did none of his family members get infected, but the guy he drove down with and spend the entire weekend with didn't get it.

"I was never away from the guy for more than 5 minutes. What the heck?"

When the General and kids got it I did not. That I know of, not having a sense of taste and smell since before the pandemic I can't say for sure but the only time I've been sick in the last few years is when I got my second covid vaccine.

Locally we're seeing a decline after an uptick a few weeks earlier.

About to go home. Good night, everyone.

And of course, the day he gets diagnosed with COVID is the day the fever finally starts dropping. It's not great yet, but he peaked at 100.5 instead of 101.8, so I'll take it.

Overall I'm really happy that I've taught Impus Major well. When I'm sick I force myself to stay in bed even if I'm bored stupid, and I drink about a gallon of "muck" (half apple juice, half water) to keep myself hydrated. I only take medication if the symptoms get really bad, because I want to track my health.

Impus Major followed all of those steps. So even though he had honest-to-goodness full-blown COVID, he seems to be recovering naturally, and I'm hoping he'll be able to socialize by the weekend.

Time will tell.

You can tell I was born to scientists.

We have administered over a dozen take-home tests and never received a positive result; even the two tests we gave Impus Major last week came back negative.

So today I'm burning a test on Impus Major just to prove to myself that the take-home kits actually work at all.

EDIT: Well, ****. I followed the test instructions like only an obsessive-compulsive can, and got another negative. My only conclusion is that our test kits are worthless.

Great. Just... great.

Hm.

That should not be.

What is the date on those tests, and what company?

It's even worse. We bought a different test from a different brand today at lunch, I was incredibly thorough, and we yet again got a negative result. I've contacted the doctor to find out what the heck is going on.

From the length and the symptoms, it's obvious he has COVID. From our in-office lab results, I'm comfortable we're all in the clear.

But a 100% failure rate of the take-home tests to detect anything is disturbing.

Tests 1, 2, and 3: iHealth COVID-19 Antigen Rapid Test
Test 4: FlowFlex COVID-19 Antigen Home Test

Freehold DM wrote:

That's what I've asked her and I'm waiting for an answer. (I figure 2-3 days for a doctor to get to her email.)

Last time we got such different results I think the hospital was playing shenanigans: Impus Major showed *NO* signs of COVID and *every* sign of a negative vaccine reaction, but they claimed that one test somehow said he had COVID (even though none of the others did) and blamed his myocarditis on COVID. Even PCR tests 12 days later were negative, so I think they were full of smurf.

This time I believe them, and I'd like to know why I'm getting dead nothing.

Life with Teenagers:

NobodysHome gets up at 5:30 am and hears Impus Minor giggling in his room.

At around 6:00 am, Impus Minor emerges into the kitchen.

NobodysHome: You should get some sleep today. Staying up all night is fun, but you need to give your body time to recover.
Impus Minor: How did you know I was up all night?
NH: Because you were awake at 5:30 am.

Yep. I know my kids well enough to know that if I see them before 7:00 am in the morning, it's because they were up all night.

Much adultiing today, so mature!

Ok, maybe I exaggerate a bit...

I went to power company get the new prognosticated electricity bills to replace old and obsolete prognosis (because the old ones were based on the last year usage when I had slowly deteriorating electric water heater).

The overpaid value is so high that that I the next bill is due in August.

I also paid the housing costs for two months.

In the afternoon I went to shop, got hot meal at the food by weight place and then bought two new towels (I need to slowly replace my old towels because some of them are actually falling apart).

I was surprised to see a paper shredder being sold in a grocery shop. I have some old documents that I need to carefully destroy to get rid of them but the price (comparable to a very cheap printer) is too much for something that I'd use for a few hours and then it would stay pointlessly in the corner (and I refuse to resort of conventional Polish "entrepreneurship" of buying a tool, using it to do what I needed it for, and then return it soon after).

Impus Major woke up at 99.3°F this morning, meaning he's finally over the hump and has beaten COVID (knock on wood).

And what's great is it's almost exactly in line with CDC and WHO guidelines: The CDC recommends 10 days from onset of symptoms (which will be Friday) plus 24 hours, and the WHO recommends 10 days plus 72 hours, or 72 hours from last symptoms.

So assuming he's symptom-free by Friday (which seems like a good bet), he'll finally be free to socialize again on Monday.

And I'd make a snarky comment about, "Until he gets the next variant," but there was a plethora of articles a couple of months back about how getting vaccinated, boosted, and then Omicroned made you "super-immune", so I'm going to cross my fingers and hope that Impus Major is done with COVID for quite a while now.

My Dad's version of Polish entrepreneurship was to use it and then sell it to a friend for five bucks higher than he paid for it.

S#%$ty commute today. Ugh.

Y'know what's astonishingly irritating? When you set up an absolute, positive, "Every day every week every year" schedule so that your managers and peers can reliably contact you...
...and then they constantly interrupt you just as you're going on break.

I start work at 6:30 am and work until 7 taking care of any urgent matters, responding to emails, and answering queries. Then I take half an hour to shower, dress, and have breakfast.

The number of people who ping me at 6:58 am because they have an issue is staggering.

I wouldn't mind people outside of the department. How are they supposed to know?

But people who have been working with me for 5-10 years? Wait until 7:30 am, darn it!

Meh. It seems that a serious rain or storm is coming. Guess who is going out for a session in a few minutes?

The storm might have passed by a few kilometers...

Or it is waiting for me on the other side of the city.

So, I have mild claustrophobia, a healthy fear of crowds, and hardcore stage fright.

Which is to say, I'm better in small social settings.

You'd think, my family, knowing this, would cut me a bit of slack, especially considering everything I do otherwise. But nope, no slack given.

Today was my pyromancer FIRE MARSHAL training, but unfortunately, should you ask me, 'Limey, will you come to West Alamississouri, or New Essex, or Princess Beatriceland, or Tierra del Huevo, or wherever else I live, and Marshal some Fires for me?', well, I'm afraid I can't as I have not yet received my certificate, badge and very shiny hat.

All I had to do was watch a charmingly '90s Powerpoint presentation, with a brief film about evacuating a hotel where they forgot to add the audio, making me wonder how footage of a lady having a nice shower was supposed to help prevent death by burning (I suppose you're less likely to catch fire if you're wet).

I enjoyed it, anyway - I learned something, and it saved me from doing any actual work.

Fairy tales and classic stories are ripe for allusion, and Cinderella is the source of many. Let's have a look!

Humans love to classify things. Fairy tales have been being used to tell stories, teach morals, and share information for ages, and we've catalogued every little detail into archetypical formats. Here's a little about how that works.

Not to be That Guy, but how old you look or feel has absolutely nothing to do with how many kids you do or don't have. I'm 45 with 2 kids but I'm in the best shape of my life and regularly get mistaken by the college kids as one of them.
