Today's one of those days that makes you understand why it's so insanely expensive to live here. January 1-4 Impus Major was in the hospital. January 5-6th were freezing, miserable, wet, cold days compounded by trying to find COVID tests for all of us, plus get Impus Major scheduled for his follow-up treatment. January 7th Impus Minor got exposed at school, and the weekend was tense, exacerbated by the closed-in feeling of the house.

So today it's bright and sunny, 65°F, with a strong-but-not-unpleasant breeze. We've aired out the entire house so it feels MUCH less stuffy and disease-ridden, and things just look a bit brighter.

Days over 80°F are extremely rare, summer or winter. Days in the low-to-mid 60's happen almost every month of the year, so the house never feels overwhelmingly stuffy.

Just a nice day.

Ask me Thursday whether I still feel happy.

We got up to 11 degrees today! Tomorrow they say we might even hit 20 in the afternoon, after it's about -10 in the morning.

About to go home. Good night, everyone.

Good night, John!

It's going to be a warm one today, we're already at 3 degrees!

I remember that feeling. The instant I got off the phone with my old boss and I had said "I'm done. I quit." I was a mix of completely relieved that chapter was over and completely bewildered that I didn't have something to immediately do. No place I had to be at a specific time. No meeting/phone call I had to prep for. It was kinda disorienting for a while.

But you're in a different situation. Your new job starts tomorrow. So enjoy your one day off.

Impus Minor: I'm cold and tired this morning.
NobodysHome: Maybe you should close your window at night. It was 42°F last night.
Impus Minor: Oh, yeah. I forgot to do that.

That's a very high temperature. I'm shocked he didn't die of heatstroke.

I usually keep the windows slightly ajar at such temps.

Keanu Reeves with a shaved head is a sad, sad sight.

Yeah, I have seen new Matrix today.

It is not a bad movie, but it could be much better. The first one-third, maybe one-half is more interesting part, sadly.

I think I'll go see King's Man tomorrow.

Apparently, I have missed the window to see Eternals in cinema.

That's because they are putting it on Disney+ tomorrow.

I think I've told this story before, but: I had a fellow grad student who was infamous for wearing shorts and having his window open no matter how cold it got.

He got a job at the University of Wisconsin - Eau Claire.

He was in his office working in the wee hours one night in the dead of winter and a colleague knocked on his door and walked in.

My Friend: How did you know I was in?
Colleague: It's 6°F. There's one window open in the entire building, and the light is on in that office. It wasn't hard.

Hey, today I had to close up the windows before 3:00 pm because it dropped below 60...

Up until 2006, I *used* to be one of those folks walking around with shorts on at single-digits F.

Then the first weekend of January, I got the most horrific *down to the bone* chill I thought I was going to shake apart from the shivering under four blankets and whatnot. And it wasn't single-digits, but something like 50F

Now I can only wear shorts to about 32F, and if it's damp that goes up to about 40F.

That's still a good 10-20 degrees lower than most people in the state.

About to go home. Good night, everyone.

Too much cheese before bedtime.

Alternatively, too little cheese before bedtime.

I don't wear shorts.

Not going for a movie today. I woke up with a headache and it seems that tomorrow we are going for a warm snap above the freezing for at least a few days, which might be the cause.

Anyway I should get and make some work done.

Okay. Have a new shave/look, a bentonite box full of healthy lunch, a bag full of healthy breakfast, a hydration bag full of water, a thermos full of licorice tea, a booking full of supplies and a car full of gas.

Let's do this.

Why did you take a thermos of liquid plutonium to work, Freehold?

:D

In "reassuring but silly" news, yesterday we received a letter from our insurance company formally approving Impus Major's 3-day hospital stay.

On the one hand, it's a little late to take him to the hospital now.
On the other hand, it means the whole overall treatment and care will be approved for coverage, greatly reducing the chance of the bill breaking $2000.

Hey calling that one a win (the second part anyway), big believer in taking wins where one can get 'em. You should send them a huge bag of pennies!

I hate how people on youtube keep asking you to "Like and Subscribe". Especially when it's at the beginning of the video. Why would I possibly "Like" the video when I haven't even seen it yet.

Of course, I've never "Liked" a video.

It's rather bold of them to assume, I watch the video while logged into my account instead of using incognito mode or even the other browser.

On the plus side, at least Tiny T-Rex only had a headache (which is now gone after drinking water).

On the down side, because of the lack of tests available for kids he now has to spend the next ten days at home.

Wow... where you live obviously matters. We're getting free test kits sent home whenever Impus Minor requests them. Which is getting depressingly often...

...but yeah, for the first semester it was, "If your kid shows any COVID symptoms, they have to stay home for 10 days," and the symptoms list was pretty much, "Any illness any kid of that age ever typically gets."

Speaking of COVID, it's really sad how easily misinformation spreads. My co-worker just posted to a 22,000-person channel about how people in other countries are being denied life insurance coverage if they get vaccinated because the vaccines are considered "experimental" and the deaths are therefore "suicides".

When a simple Google of "snopes COVID vaccine life insurance" is all you need: Snopes link. (Or many others, if you don't trust Snopes.)

It's only been since the end of Christmas break (the last week) that tests have become scarce as everyone just decided at once they should get tested.

His headache is better now, he was vaccinated five weeks ago and he has no other symptoms so at least we can spend the next week and a half chilling rather than fearing the unknown.

Oh, you're snuffling around the forest floor for acorns too!

Tests have become scarce in my area, too. Only just recently. I dread the idea of my kids going back to virtual, even if only temporarily.

The antigen (take-home) tests are utterly random around here: One day GothBard walked into a store, there was an entire display full of them, she picked up 4, and that was that. My fellow chaperones were flabbergasted that we'd been able to find any. Sure enough, we sent Impus Minor there a few days later and they were sold out.

But the school districts themselves have a steady supply, and any student who's been exposed can request a kit to take home.

So now every time Impus Minor gets exposed we tell him to pick up a kit.

Amusingly enough, we're still "behind". We had to use 2 of the 4 we bought ourselves on him, plus 1 of the 2 from his first take-home kit. So he's due another kit and I figure he takes one and I take one at we're at least breaking even with the school.

The PCR tests are "relatively" plentiful: Stand in a 2-3 hour line to get same-day walk-in testing, or schedule yourself about 10 days in advance for an appointment to get one.

So today was interesting.

Went all the way into the Bronx for the first day of the new job, and I was told that they are now officially working from home. So I did orientation in my car and drove home and signed a lot of documents and scanned them and sent them in and am prepared to do a lot of trainings over the next...ever.

Moreover, I got an email from the old job saying I needed to check in to the electronic work cabinet we use. It just said one thing.

Terminated.

With that a massive weight was taken off my shoulders.

OK... wow...

Guess what?

Once you have COVID, you'll continue to test positive for 60-90 days after you've recovered.

Would've been awfully nice for SOMEONE to have mentioned that to us BEFORE I brought Impus Major in for testing.

Ought to get a hilarious call from a health care worker, though.

"Did you know your son tested positive?"
"Oh, yeah! Want me to bring him in again? It's just his utter optimism bursting through!"

But I just tested negative. It's been less than 60 days for me.

Freehold DM wrote:

Looks like it's just biology as usual.

Honestly, I'm still wondering whether or not Impus Major ever had COVID. We'll know more in 3-5 days.
