The Family Business

Game Master The Little King

The Marid clan is famous throughout Garund, Kelesh, and the Inner Sea for churning out many a famous hero, arcanist, and explorer since their ancestor Nikodi the Victorious brought an end, in the minds of a few, to the longstanding war with Geb four millennia ago. The latest in the hero's line now find themselves waking up from a deep sleep in strange uniforms beside strange corpses...which have begun to move.

I'll see if I can get an actual backstory written up today, since I never bothered with that.

Garundi, actually, thanks for asking. Your family is native to Nex.

Thanks. That will help with naming traditions.

Still have race/gear in the air, but daphne's skeleton is there in her alias.

Random question but what's the nearest town, size wise? I'm mostly trying to figure out how Daphne views her crafting supplies and that depends on what's locally available.

Name: Zaheer, male Garundi
Class: Sorcerer
Races:Half-elf, Human, Aasimar, Ifrit, Sylph, Sulis
Personalty: Middle child. Too young to do alot of the cool things older siblings do, and too old to play with the younger siblings. Zaheer choose to focus on clan business, i.e. making the clan rich.
Zaheer is interested in all clan business and has grown up learning the trade. Zaheer has thought about becoming an adherent of Kalistrade, but the regimens and restrictions don't seem worth it. If he can get an upperhand on a deal, he'll take it.
Possible traits to take: Commercial Savvy, Merchant's child or Trustworthy.

Not the GM, but from the intro, he said that the domain was north of Oenopion. From the Inner sea world guide, this town is a town of alchemists with a population of 8900.

Right, I have that town as her default, I'm just wondering if it's actually the closest or just a useful landmark to point at the plains. The difference between the closest town is "paris" and "ya, london is north of paris" as it were.

Ahhahaha! I just got a really good idea for this :) Except recruitment ends tomorrow, yikes! and I dont know if anyone else has opted for the Grand-father, (or even great Grand Father) slot, I havnt read through the whole thread yet, but here goes :)

The Grand father is an idea based loosely off of Makarov from Fairy Tail, and his power, Titan, which allows him to grow to massive proportions.

Markov Monteo would be a short, and very old human, standing only a few feet tall, and seemingly not very strong. Then he gets mad and all of a sudden he grows greatly until he stands over 10 feet tall, a giant where an old man used to be, and that giant is about to punch you hard...

Markov would be a Jotunkin Barbarian with a permanent Reduce Person that gets suppressed when he rages, turning him from a small human to a large one :)

This would need 2 things tho, the first would be if it is ok for me using the Jotunkin Barbarian archetype, which is 3pp.
The second would be if it is ok that the Reduce Person spell gets suppressed when I rage, and then turns back on after I finish.

If that is allowed, then i can be the jolly old grandpa (or great grandpa) who runs around all small and short and happy, until you mess with his grandkids, then BLAM! SUPER SIZED GRANDPA HAS SOMETHING TO SAY TO YOU! >:(

Edit: Just a bit of info, the Jotunkin barbarian is largely similar to the regular barbarian, normally, you get +4 moral bonus to your str/con score, +2 Will and -2 to AC. The Jotunkin gets a +4 size bonus to str/con, -2 Dex and +2 AC [ooc](+1 AC effectively).
I will also be fighting with my fists, so the extra reach wont be abused :)[/ooc]

Name: Kansenshi
Class: Stygian Slayer
Races:Sylph
Personalty: A normal reclusive flighty curious Sylph with an unhealthy obsession with the cat and mouse game hunting armed dangerous men. He tends to have a distant but affection relationship with his family tending to enjoy popping in and out at unexpected times and observing them silently from a distance. He is very protective of them but careful with involvement. A firm believer in tough love he also tries to make sure the lessons learns are not too tough and will to save his siblings in times of need.

@Cam James: I believe the DM wanted to do Paizo-only content, though you can ask.

EDIT: Oh, also, because I never wrote it anywhere—here's

Uncle Eston's Story:

Eston Marid was born to... questionable parentage, way back in the days of Aroden. Though no one from his parents’ generation still lives, as he tells the story he spent his early years as a blot on the family’s name, slow to learn and mature and generally kept hidden when his father and uncles met with anyone important. Dissatisfied with the teasing he received from his siblings and cousins, Eston left home at a young age, and set off to see the world.

Over the next half a century or so, he found his way counter-clockwise around the Inner Sea. After a few years in a monastery on the Isle of Jalmeray, the young blade found himself unsatisfied with local politics, and journeyed on, finishing his training at the Pathfinder Lodge in Absalom. He made his first bit of fame and coin working for the Society, editing chronicles and running messages. From Qadira to Brevoy, he escorted travelers and fought bandits, bringing what he had learned of Abadar’s Justice to the lawless forests Taldor forgot. A year spent at the Worldwound was all it took to learn that he was no crusader—and so he headed West, studying fencing and lore at the great universities of Ustalav. In Varisia, he scouted Thassalionian ruins for the Society, work that brought him back to Garund through the tombs of Ancient Osirion. In the Mwangi forests, he fought river pirates and sang savage songs with the wild elves, before deciding his adventuring days were done and retiring from the Society. And, after a few more years in another monastery, he decided it was time to return to Nex.

When Eston visited his family estates once again, he was no longer young—and, as he aged slowly, his parents, uncles, and cousins had gone faster. All that remained among his remaining siblings and cousins was a dim memory of a slow child, one that was quickly replaced by the dashing, fabled swordsman who had returned home after dozens of years of heroics. Uncle Eston had traveled farther and longer than anyone else still alive in the Marid Clan, and over the next few decades, he became a keeper of family stories and secrets—especially those that painted him in a positive light. Now, after quite some time, even he has begun to show the extent of age, but he still remains in remarkably good shape for the generational wisdom he’s brought to the family. Mostly content to remain at home, collecting and copying books and ledgers, Eston hasn’t had a proper fight in decades, and his fighting skills have grown a bit rusty (though that might very well change soon, it means he’s now no better with a sword than his more promising grand-nephews).

The only issue I see here is that "The Family Business" is heroing/adventuring/exploring. Most of the family wealth has been funneled into land. Think Downton Abbey, only everyone in the family is a badass. So making the clan rich would mean managing the estate. Otherwise, sounds like a new and fresh concept that I'd like to see in action.

On that note, feel free to jump in to the discussion RP. You'd join Team RIDE, making it Team RIDEZ! lol

Yes, Oenepion is the closest.

As fun as that sounds, thunderbeard's right, I'm going to have to say no to 3pp material, and I'm not going to allow a permanent spell, even if it is Reduce Person. That's just playing a little too fast and loose with the rules. Looking forward to what else you've got. Don't worry about recruitment closing, I'll let you put up a character. Recruitment only ends for people who haven't given me a concept by then.

Fun! I'm looking forward to seeing a Slayer in role play. Remember not to get too attached to one race.

Jelani:
Name: Jelani Marid
Role: Grandfather.
Class: Mutation Warrior Drill Seargent Fighter 3 - Master of Many Styles Monk 2 - Student of War 2 - Variant Multiclass Alchemist
Prefered Race: Human
Secondary Choices: Half-Orc, Aasimar, Elemental Races.

Personality: Jelani Marid is exceptionally smart. Disciplined but curious, he has made a study of several different methods of fighting and, not surprisingly, combined his brutal physical strength with a keen intellect to make something deeply unpleasant for everyone else. He calculates how an enemy will move, and uses their own movements to increase his damage to them. He even makes use of several Alchemist talents, and has some skill in that area.

It is notable that Jelani has spent much of his time at the various homes and business interests of the Marid family, functioning as something of a trouble shooter. He excels at finding problems and then solving them in the most effective manner - whether the solution comes at the end of a pen or on the tips of his twin swords, he usually doesn’t mind. Jelani is quite moral, however, and will go out of his way to avoid causing unnecessary harm to innocents.

He has also been known to serve as a trainer, teacher and sparring partner for the more physically inclined Marid family members. Many know his favored tricks, and often work better with him in teamwork situations.

As a result, despite his advanced age, Jelani hasn’t spent as much time as he would adventuring and training. Although his duty to kith and kin comes first, Jelani has been known to disappear when he doesn’t have another job to do. When he returns he usually comes with stories of strange places, stranger people and odd events. And a fresh set of skills, to better serve the Marids.

Most would expect Jelani to be somewhat serious and severe. It’s rarely true. Jelani typically has a somewhat twisted sense of humour, emitted in a dry style. Only in combat does he tend to be truly serious, and even then isn’t above making mocking observations - if only to upset and annoy enemies. Fiercely protective, Jelani will merrily sacrifice what’s left of his life to save others, but is unwilling to die if he can avoid it.

History: Jelani is one of the older members of the Mard clan, and father and grandfather to several more. His long life has been split between his passion for learning and adventuring and his duty to aid and train the other members of the family.

Even as a child it was clear that the only thing that equaled Jelani’s mental prowess was his body. Tall, broad shouldered and tough, Jelani was adept at the more physical side of life. He trained quickly in armour and with weapon, but he was somewhat clumsy.

On the other hand he was also smart. Where his body was big and clumsy his mind was fast and agile. It occurred to him that he could use one to supplement the other. Instead of dodging out of the way as a response to an attack, he calculated where the next attack would come from and...simply not be there.

Slowly, Jelani began to train his abilities. At the same time his skill with numbers as well as blades meant he was often asked to help others of the family with business issues. Jelani was happy to do both. He raided dungeons with friends and family, and then returned to resolve accounting issues with a trader representing the Pactmasters of Khatapesh.

Jelani eventually married and had children. His work meant he was away often, but he would often take his family with him on non dangerous missions. Even when he trained with several monks, learning how to use his skills and intelligence to inflict damage to his foes he visited his family.

As he aged, and his muscles weakened, Jelani relied even more on his sharp wits and powerful mind to see him through. He studied fighting through texts, learning to incorporate the ancient wisdoms into his own fighting even while remaining at home longer and staying more often.

It is assumed by the Marid that at some point Jelani will finally stay put permanently, and take the reigns of at least part of the family, possibly rising to lead it. But as old as he is, nothing has ever managed to stop his curiosity to find out what else is out there. And so he occasionally vanishes to take another journey, find another treasure, hunt down another piece of knowledge. And occasionally, things explode.

well Permanency is a spell, and it only costs 2.5k gold for reduce person, but thats fine :)
i will think of something else. hopefully. probably...

Name: Mama "Cas" Cassandra Marid
Class: Dual-cursed /Warsighted (if allowed, or just Warsighted) Oracle of Battle 7
Races: Human, Half-Elf, Half-Orc, or Aasimar
Feats: Metamagic (Rime & Toppling) & Eldritch Heritage chain
Personality: Mama Cas, as most call her, is one of the oldest living females in the Marid family (mother or possibly even grand-mother). She was quite the warrior in her prime, but many wounds and Father Time have left in her in a weakened state. She serves as the family's councilor, mediator, fortune-teller, soothsayer, and confidant. She's always telling old battle stories, and while they often seem made up, more are actually true, although highly embellished. She is very protective of the family and most likely has some authority over the dealings involving the family name.

@Jon: Well done, very cohesive character. It has all the makings of a father-figure though. Would you be opposed to being father of the siblings? Just a thought.

@Cam: Yeah, but you'd have to pay 2.5k g every time you went back to being small. I just don't see that being practical in general, much less on an adventure.

@Nick: Those two archetypes are fine as long as you realize you can't take the Misfortune Revelation from Dual-Cursed. Interesting character!

Applicants so far:
Rogelio: Male Cav2/Fig2/Hunter 3 "Knight w/ a Panther"
Stephan: Male Investigator or Alchemist 7(which one?)

Kansenshi: Slayer 7 "Flaky, Tough Lover"
Jelani: Fighter 3/Mon2/SW2/AlcVM "If Knowledge is Power..."
Cas: Oracle of Battle 7 "Protective Mother"

@Cam: An Improved Hat of Disguise (12k) lets you switch size between small and medium at will. If you get Permanencied Enlarge Person, because the spells don't stack, the hat would temporarily override the Enlarge effect and let you switch between the two sizes without having to bend any rules—though I believe you'd go back to being large when asleep or unconscious. (Normally, as the GM pointed out, when you end a permanencied spell you have to buy a new one).

That said, I'd recommend against it—it's almost all your gold for an effect that's dramatic but ultimately might terrify all the regular humans you interact with.

Recruitment is officially closed

No brand new entries. If you have changes to make, you can make them, but I'm unaware of anyone who's still deliberating...

I'll have my selections up shortly.

Yeah, I have no issues with that. It was more or less what I was going.

Mama Cas was my submission, I removed the bard level and went straight oracle...you have me listed as both Nickadeamous and Cas.

I realized that afterward. I know it's the same entry. Thanks, though!

Best of luck everybody!

Maybe the GM's a halfling, or a gnome, and you misread his response.

I choose to assume that the GM is a being from outside of time and space, with only a limited understanding of our own pathetic temporal awareness.

For them, 'shortly' means 'before the stars burn themselves from the sky and all life is as dust'.

Okay, sorry it took so long, but it was difficult.

Here is the final cut!

PS: I've decided to run two tables.

Table 1
Malcon, Skrutene, Inta, Daphne, and Rogelio

Table 2
Eston, Altius, Leana, Cas, and Aebin

Thanks for everyone's applications!

Table 1 will be on this thread, table 2's thread will be up soon.

I'll let everybody know on here when they're ready.

Yay now we get to haggle about the important stuff:

IMPORTANT QUESTIONS:

Why did our great great grandfather Ebenezer build all these extra staircases? We only have seven floors, and that's if you count the ancillary dungeon auxiliary that connects by way of the northwest tower as it's own floor. Speaking of, I don't think anyone ever figured out what depth it was at. Did he really have to build eighteen grand stairs to promenade up and down? It's a shame we lost his picture in the flood when cousin eustace opened the portal to the elemental plane of water. He probably had the family ears.

Oh and we could also decide on a race. I still vote feytouched but we have choices.

yah happy to get in

I guess I better finish up the profile, ey? Although I guess I need to wait to know my species...

Yeah, feel free to move that over to the discussion page.
