Ben 10 Season 2 is going into the donation bin, and it's funny just how much of an exemplar of 'ruination by marketing' the series is.

(1) Kid gets alien device that allows him to turn into 10 different powerful aliens.
(2) Seasons progress as the kid learns how to use the device to transform into all 10 aliens.
(3) Series does well; toys sell like hotcakes. Marketers say, "Hey, we can't end the series! We're making money here!"
(4) Series turns irrevocably stupid as he suddenly becomes Ben 11... Ben 12... Ben 13...
...anything the marketers can get away with...
..."And oh yeah, let's let a bunch of other kids transform, too, and turn them into a fighting team! That'll sell LOADS of figures!"

The first couple of seasons were a remarkably good show. By the end of Season 2, you could see where the train wreck was going, and that location was ToySalesVille.

Still bitter about that one...

Did anyone see the episode of Quickdraw when the Younger brothers kidnap deputy Eli and use him as bait and while Sheriff Hoyle is trying to figure out how to get him out without springing the trap the undertaker mentions he has dynamite.

I get troglodytes are big fans of riding dinosaurs, but there is absolutely no f##%ing reason why one would ride a triceratops into a g!*!$#n crypt.

That is all, rant over.

So, yeah, this is definitely political, but I think the Europeans might appreciate a read on just how bad U.S. sick leave is.

The short version: Since there are no regulations on sick leave in the U.S., fully 1/3 of all employees have to go to work sick or not get paid. So the whole coronavirus, "Stay at home if you're sick," approach isn't going to work here.

(And the New Hampshire case is very indicative of the American "tough it out" attitude, too: A person who'd been diagnosed with the coronavirus was told to quarantine themselves at home, but since they had already paid to go to a conference, they went anyway since their symptoms were mild.)

I get riding triceratops, it sounds like the beeznees. However, there's a time and place for that, and inside a crypt with all sorts of stone coffins and nowhere to properly move around is not one of them.

My absolute favorite/most loathsome example of sick leave is the school district.

"If your child exhibits any of the following symptoms, please keep them home for the day, as if they infect others it can significantly impact everyone's learning."
(Long list of items, including fevers over 99.0°F, vomiting, etc.)

And yet if you hit 8 sick days for the school year, you get a threatening letter from the school board that they're going to report you to the truancy office and Child Protective Services for child neglect.

I know. I get one every year for Impus Minor.

And, being me, I called the office to complain, and they said, "Oh, that's just a form letter the state requires us to send. Just ignore it."

Er... no.

You can't threaten me with CPC and then say, "Oh, just ignore the letter."

My kid's going to school sick until you stop threatening me with life-changing assaults.

I remember getting sick in Jr high with pneumonia and being completely out of commission for two weeks.

If that happened now I would be out a whole paycheck and thus fail to meet multiple monthly payments, debts, and dues. Almost none of which would care for any excuse why I didn't meet my pay date. The rest would slap a late fee on it but accept late payment... as long as it's not TOO late.

Heck, when I had a cracked tooth removed a few months back, my supervisor was calling me the day after surgery asking when I'd be back in the office.

I wasn't even back to solid foods yet.

So thinking about this. Most dinosaurs, cool as they are in concept, are basically just bags of hit points with one, sometimes two decent attacks in pathfinder classic.

Anyone have some fun and flavor-suitable templates to recommend adding to them to make them more interesting combatants? I know I could just give them unique abilities from scratch, but I at least want to try working by the books first. ^^

The larger carnivores (TREX) may have a sonic attack representing their roar. Treat as a breath weapon, but sonic damage and radius out from the creature.

Tail slaps with bull rush/push/knock prone attack. "Did I just get yeeted off this bridge by the stegasaurus's thagomizer?" "Yes, yes you did."

Trample for the large herbivores (or really almost any of the BIG ones).

Minor earthquake on movement - knock prone effect for the larger ones.

Passage creates a trail of difficult terrain as their footprints are difficult through which to navigate.

And places that do give paid time off...it's vastly inconsistent from company to company.

In my company, we get one pool of PTO, plus 6 paid holidays separate. That single pool is used for sick time, vacation, whatever. So someone decides they want to take a family vacation in May, and they have the PTO for a week off. They take it. Great. All is groovy. Then in June they get pneumonia, with no PTO left because they DARED to take time off work to spend time with their family. People have lost their jobs because of these scenarios. Oh, and until very recently, our PTO didn't roll over from year to year. Use it or lose it. So don't use it because you might get sick or get in a serious car accident...and then you have the entire company trying to take time off between Thanksgiving and Christmas because *everyone* saved their PTO and nobody wants to lose the benefits...

Fire away, Fritzy. At NH. His fault.

In the Dresden Files series (Book 6 or 7? Somewhere in there, name of the book is DEAD BEAT)

(SPOILER ALERT-If you want to read this book and be surprised, Dont read the spoiler!)

Spoiler:

The Hero takes a t-rex skeleton and (temporarily) resurrects it, and rides a fully-fleshed T-Rex through downtown Chicago, in the middle of a zombie/undead apocalypse.

Best. Scene. In. A. Novel. EVER.

Uh... Taking care of your child is neglect? I thought that Australia is the place where everything is upside down...

Here the primary difference is (or at least was in my times) presence of formal note from the MD. The parent could excuse the kid a few times on minor issues, though longer absences required doctor's confirmation.

As long as the kid was able to catch up with the material (which might include necessity necessity for extra tests), excused absences were not a major problem. I think I missed a month once because of extended sickness. Not really sure, though, it was long ago... Those could have been multiple separate absences of two three weeks.

The problem is that the investigative processes and threatening letters are kicked off without thought. And people do get investigated, and even when the parents have all the evidence to back them up, sometimes children are pulled from the home during the investigation and the investigations can take months. It's archaic.

And then you get the other side of the mess, and I'm not going to go into that one right now.
