My sister works at a funeral home, and she just told me they were closing up early because of the storm and heard something pounding on the side of the building. They thought, "That doesn't sound right," and went up from the basement to see. The snowballs were that loud.

:)

Now you're just showing off!

Final weather note, since I'm kind of under the gun today (only pushing myself; most people are actually waiting for marching orders before cranking out dozens of certification questions, but I don't wait well).

We have now had the driest February since 1864. Yes. We haven't had a warm, dry, sunny February like this since the Civil War.

Yet my uphill neighbor is overwatering so much I believe I could grow rice in the back half of my yard (is 1" of standing water enough for rice?).

IIRC, rice can grow on regular soil. Flooding the fields increases the output enough to justify a lot of extra work with water. I think that the sapling have to be grown out of water anyway, before they reach the size that allows replanting them in water (or flooding the paddy field). I would have to check, though.

Ah, well, *leaps into hyperlink wiki binge*

Oh well.

I mentioned it recently I think so that's why I deleted it.

There's only one way to settle this!

A cross country race to Poland!

The first person to drive there gets Kingmaker!!

YOU can drive to POland,
I'LL be playing Kingmaker.
I bought it before Christmas when it was on sale from GOG.

Why I love my daughter, reason number 7,845:
In Trader Joe's this evening, Hermione rushed back from the sample counter to offer me a bite of grilled cheese. "Taste this! This cheese is amazing! But I have to use your phone to go take a picture of it because I'll never remember."
"What is it?"
"Double Gloucester with onion and chives."
"Then just tell me 'It's the Shakespeare cheese,' and I'll remember."
"Huh? Why?"
"Because Gloucester is a villain in Shakespeare."
"Oh, that's right. King Lear. Duh."
"Um... how is that a 'duh'?"
"Oh, I read it in my classroom. Also Macbeth."
Now I can't wait to have King Lear grilled cheese again.

I bought Gloucester King Lear's cheese with onion and chives and it was nice. It wasn't grilled, though.

One key problem with a race across Poland: pastry. Anyone who attempts will have to roll a Will save every 5 rounds to avoid stopping for baked goods.

Also sausages.

Now I really want to see this as a Hanna Barbera cartoon. Especially with the swirly rainbow star animation at scene changes. I'll be in Captain Caveman's car.

Our local library finally got the English translation of the Witcher novels. I'm really enjoying the first one, but so far, my favorite chapter is one that wasn't included in the tv show. I'm hoping it's in season 2.

In my memory there was a character named Muttley that was one of the 'bad' characters. Usually acted as a sidekick to Dick Dastardly (who I recall as snidely whiplash, but whatevs).
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Muttley

I also recall that the pink panther had an occasional sidekick named Smedley. While google shows returns for Smedley Hanna Barbera, most seem to link to Muttley. Did I make this up? Juxtapose some other character as the panther's sidekick?

I shall travel to Poland in a Mark III Webley-Vickers half-track armoured sausage-snatcher, with the original two-pounder gun in the chassis replaced with a specialist device for siphoning Baltic porter into the storage tanks on the back.

The Aged Wizard shall join the race in his heavily-modified Magi-Mobile.

Currently resembles a older model blue Lorry from England, complete with invisibility device and flying gear. Very Dependable.

Although it DOES tend to get a bit cranky when forced to go long distances at high speeds,...

Maybe if I outfitted it with Pasty-pullers to grab it some sweets as we race through Poland, with Magical-Sausage-Magneto-grabbers for myself, naturally.

Pasty-pullers are not the same as pastry-pullers. Just to be clear.

I had a friend who painted his girlfriend naked on the hood of his car but the police didn't like it so they made him change it so he gave her pasties.

British Pasties ≠ U.S. Pasties

BIG difference. Very much like "rubbers".

Speaking of protection, I have no idea whether people consider this "political", but the coronavirus is finally starting to have a significant impact on us: The annual Game Developer's Conference (GDC) that GothBard goes to is all but canceled (only 34% of planned attendees now plan on showing up), and it looks like the school's entire SoCal trip at the start of April may end up getting canceled.

Honestly, at first I was rather dismissive of the virus as having a similar fatality rate but lower transmission rate than the flu. Both of those have proven untrue, so it's actually something to pay attention to, so I appreciate the concerns and caution.

Just seriously disrupts several of our annual "things".

The downside to the politics rule is that, after a certain point, everything can be made to be political. Saying "Gee, I'm worried I might catch the coronavirus" can be deliberately misconstrued as a partisan dig by someone determined to be upset about something. I don't think "I don't want to get sick" is a political statement, but it so easily segues into things that do end up as political hot buttons...

Back off, Fritzy. Metadiscussion doesn't count.

I am Pathfinderizing the Discworld universe, using E6, as I feel like even the most competent protagonists, such as Granny Weatherwax, rarely achieve the power levels common in PF's 1-20 games.

I would appreciate advice for such a thing. I have a few in-world caveats, such as clerics being able to make custom deities out of Small Gods but needing to find worshippers to increase in power, Wizards requiring the murder of their superiors using non-magical means for advancement, and Witches requiring covens, etc, but most of it is related to lore, RP, etc. I know for a fact being a spellcaster in this world is meant to be a pain in the butt. Beyond the E6, I wonder what mechanical tweaks would be helpful?

Also, I would like some means of reflecting the setting's narrative causality. You know, stuff like "million to 1 chances crop up 9/10 times" and "it makes sense because in a story it would make sense" that happen in that weird, quirky flat world. If any other fans have ideas, it would be appreciated.

Terry Pratchett is the greatest writer to have died in the last 20 years, and I vehemently dislike Harry Potter for knocking him off the throne as the bestselling author in Britain when it did. JK Rowling isn't fit to write fanfiction in his universe by comparison.

5 people marked this as a favorite.

I agree that Rowling isn't in the same league as Pratchett by a long shot, but I also don't know if I would have gotten into fantasy—and Pratchett by extension—if the Harry Potter books hadn't hooked me when I was a kid.

Oh, they're a solid B, but the fact that they dethroned the greatest is such a blemish it makes me flinch.

Pratchett would never have hamfistedly ended a series with a bunch of unforshadowed lore that seems like it was written by the seat of one's pants to tie together a bunch of loose ends, as Deathly Hallows was. Even Kingmaker's ending came less out of left field than that one...

2 people marked this as a favorite.

I will give it credit for bringing Fantasy to a new generation, though I feel personally that such was more marketing than writing quality. Again - solid, emphatic "B" writing - entertaining, worth every minute - but so far from Pratchett as to be laughable.
