I'm currently deciding whether to have my spleen removed, and it's a suuuper frustrating dilemma.
This is the first time in my life where there are no good or certain solutions -- only varying degrees of uncertainty and risks.
Growing up suuucks.
I'm so sorry, my friend. This is so frustrating. :/
Praying for you.

Yeah, good luck! If I were in your position, I'd ask friends and co-workers whether they know anyone who's had it done. When GothBard had her gall bladder removed, the doctors all assured her it was really minor and she wouldn't even notice. This was a complete lie, and she was unable to eat many foods for many months.
What *was* helpful was the large number of friends and acquaintances who popped out of the woodwork with, "Oh, yeah. I had that done. And it sucked for 3 years or so, but then your body finally adjusts and it gets better."
Yet another aspect of U.S. medical care: Doctors are unwilling to tell you anything for fear of being sued for telling you something that ends up being incorrect.
Yeah, the doctor I talked to last week was very specific and blunt in his recommendation -- but getting a doctor to sit down and say something, anything beyond "well I've heard that there's this procedure...", was an adventure path in and of itself. If it's not in a doctor's specialty, they don't want to say anything about it one way or another; it took me a year and a half to find an appropriate specialist because most doctors couldn't or wouldn't even tell me which specialty spleens fall under.
Anyhow, good call on friends and family, maybe the grapevine can help.

I can only wish you the best of luck here. Some situations have no clear right or wrong as you said. It is just a matter of which one sucks slightly less.

Well you are a counterculturalist. ;)
What about the early seasons is fanfic-ish, they're pretty faithful to the books as far as I remember. Aside from moving faster than the books of course, and Peter Dinklage being entirely too handsome to play Tyrion.
Oh and which fight did you like, the one with the Viper or the one with the Hound?

I couldn't get into GoT, books or show. I couldn't get invested in any of the characters, so there was no point for me. shrug
It was like fantasy-medieval Gatsby without the saving grace of Fitzgerald's prose or lens into an era of history. Also my grade wasn't dependent on reading it. though I never actually read Gatsby in school

A second opinion appointment, set up to answer all your questions gleened from both the internet and from fr&fam, might be useful if you can get on.
Even a tele-consult would help. A doctor with no personal investment in the outcome is more likely to freely answer your questions. One thing I've found useful is this set of questions
1) What are my options?
2) (For each option) What evidence supports choosing this option. Are there any definitive studies. How long after the surgery were patients followed.
3) (For each option) What are the possible bad outcomes. What percentage of the time do each of those outcomes occur.
4) (For each option) What are the possible good outcomes. What percentage of the time do each of those outcomes occur
5) (For each option) Would you recommend one of your own family members to choose this option.
6) (For each option) Is there anything else I should have asked to make an informed decision
7) What happens if I do nothing.
The internet has some reliable sites that can help you sketch out some of the answers to 1) before you even see the doc
PM me if you'd like to do this but it looks overwhelming. I've gone through this decision process with quite a few family members.

In my eternal quest to rid myself of Current Events I'm getting there! I've gone from three sections of it to one!, I am trying to find ways to make the class more geography focused. I found a site with a random country spinner, so I can have the kids pick a country and find a news story or two from it as well as maybe just having a little focus on finding countries on a map. Since...well, we're sort of infamous as a nation for being crap at that. They'll still need to read articles and such to respond to, but a little more skills-focused.

So, we're in a "down cycle" at work, so we've been trying to pick up work for other teams.
The problem is, their processes are so cumbersome they're having massive issues even asking us what to do. Then our turnaround time is 1/4 theirs, so they can't fill our pipeline fast enough.
This morning was pretty much the final straw. In our 200+ person division, I am considered one of the top 5 tech gurus. I was just told that I shouldn't start on the next project because it was "too hard" for me, in spite of the fact I'd already re-done the script in my head and was ready to crank it out.
So, at the moment, I am earning a six-figure salary doing a craft project with cardboard, craft glue, and acoustic foam at home. (Acoustic damping for my work microphone, but still... it's a craft project.)
Great work if you can get it...

Well, apparently on the affected stations the failure rate is 100%.
It's just that only 5% are affected.
And this one was EXACTLY Shiro's issue. Mine is only similar -- I've got a USB-C dock and I only see the behavior on reboot. But it's similar enough to likely have the same underlying causes.

Possibly, but with both Shiro's and my laptop exhibiting the exact same buggy behavior, you can either conclude that the IT departments from two $100B+ companies made the exact same bizarre error in pushing a Windows update, or that yet again Microsoft released a buggy update.

We either have the bottom port as well, or just stick all the cables in it manually.
Why upgrade the docking stations when the old ones still work?

Interesting! So spherical blood cells? How does spleen reduction/removal help with that?
In my case, it's:
Cystic fibrosis --> liver cirrhosis --> portal hypertension --> enlarged spleen --> constipation and other problems
The doctor talked about three possible solutions: a catheter between liver and spleen, embolizing part of my spleen, and removing it outright. He was negative about all of them, he thinks my spleen isn't worth treating; but oddly enough, he was least negative about outright removing it.

Thanks for the offer! I didn't ask for percentages or studies, but we did go through possible outcomes (good and bad) and probable complications. And as he was very negative about doing anything, I can safely assume he wouldn't recommend any treatment for his family. :p
Basically my decision is hinging on a generalization that he made about my constipation, which is outside of his specialty, and I'm waiting on more info from another doctor to make the call. Of course he's probably swamped with patients with lung infections atm, so who knows when I'll hear from him...

Yeah the Viper v. Mountain fight was utterly brutal on screen. Not a fan of the show's aftermath though, it raises a big question that's never answered.
I'll have to reread the books (read: listen to the audiobooks), my memory of them is hopelessly confused with that of the show.

Speaking of updates...
Last Wednesday Thursday, Lord Of The Rings Online had an update 25.1, starting annual Winter Festival, and a adding few minor things. As a part of the update, the tasks (simple daily, "bring me 10 rat-asses" quests that are mostly used to speed gathering reputation in various regions) got blocked because something broke, with the promise they will be turned on soon, implying a new patch.
So yesterday I jokingly asked on the world chat what will get broken while patching the bug.
Today (Tuesday), as a part of weekly maintenance, the patch 25.1.1 was applied to the game, with downtime planned 8AM-12PM, Eastern Time...
And then extended to 2PM. And then extended indefinitely...

Spleen removal doesnt help with the blood cells itself. But since the spleen breaks down the abnormal sized cells, depending on how bad the spherocytosis is, the spleen actually breaks the bloodcells down faster then the body can make them. Causing a huge spleen, and the need for blood transfusions.
So removing the whole spleen, or a big part of it, reduces or removes the need for those blood transfusions, and the other problems caused by the enlarged spleen.
