GRRRRR.

My mother-in-law can be lovely and understanding and thoughtful at times.
She is also a colossal, unreliable pain in the [redacted].

When I dropped Hermione off at her house this morning, she said she would bring Hermione back to our place "between 1:30 and 2:00".
I left Mom's and drove back to our suburb to meet WW at choir practice. He asked, "So did you invite Mom to stay for Sunday dinner (Southern = big Sunday meal is right after church) when she drops off Hermione?"
So I texted her and invited her. (She prefers text because of her hearing.)

2:00 came and went. Then 2:30. WW texted his mom to ask if everything was okay and if she was staying for dinner when she dropped Hermione off.
At 3:00, she arrives, sends Hermione in, hollers from the driveway that she's in a hurry and can't stay and didn't realize we expected Hermione back by a certain time.

And then Hermione tells me that she and Grandma already ate together.

I don't mind her deciding to make other plans. I mind her never telling us when she does.

What I learned from YouTube this weekend.

There isn't a single gangster rap song that can't be made better by dubbing it over The Muppets.

Both Beastie Boys and System of a Down are both prime material for jazz covers.

Jurassic Park is a lot better if you replace all the dinosaurs with giant cats.

This is why I'm not allowed on YouTube.

... I say as we've since been playing, like, five musical number songs all day yesterday and today.

WOOF.

"The Next Right Thing" is, hands down, the best song. Just. The best song.

It is not a song you can simply listen to on repeat.

It is not a song you can hear and just feel good while listening to.

It simply the most powerful song from the film - the context is incredibly important (it might come off vague to those who haven't seen the film) - but given that context it is simply excellent and poignant and lovely in most every way.

"Into the Unknown" is this film's attempt at "Let it Go" and it really isn't the same thing. Except for the fact that I keep on listening to the daggum thing over and over and over again. Both the film's internal version and the one by Panic! At the Disco. Of course, for full impact, you have to realize that said song is only half of itself - the rest of the song (or at least the rest of its story that it's building to) is unlocked with the DLC is found in "Show Yourself" which I'm not linking because "Hahah, end of movie spoilers." isn't a thing I'm trying to pull over others (yet: you guys get a few months, tops; maybe a few weeks).

But, uh, you can find it on Disney Vevo. Spoiler warning, though. Like, "Elsa's entire character arc ending (more or less)"-type spoiler warning.

But daggum if I don't love literally every musical number in this film - they do a good job of fundamentally tying them to the character development and stories and weave the ideas cleanly and clearly.

I will say that there are quite a few elements to the story that I called early and correctly; there are a few I was wrong on, but one of those was because (in my opinion) it wasn't strongly presented or hashed out, one because they never dove into the deeper possible meanings of it in the context of a chosen-one narrative (which this only kiiiiiiiiiinda has; I mean, it does, but it's more complicated than that), and one because I simply misread where the signs were leading.

Anyway, it's late and I'm now to bed! TL: away!

Speaking of educational! This isn’t:

So, according to this, the god Thor (sorry, I don’t have actual stats online, though I’m sure you can find them; his printed strength is 98, though, with his belt, meaning it’s 49 without) can lift (with his belt) as a light load, 6,533,600 lbs. (so, a small bridge, but not a tugboat), or as a medium load 13,107,200 lbs. (so a 300’ tall rocket launch tower, but not the Eiffel Tower), or as a heavy load 19,660,800 lbs. (so a destroyer, frigate, space shuttle, or large submarine; but neither a Capitol ship or unloaded freighter). He can drag up to 98 million lbs. (98,304,000 to be exact; so a large bridge, cruise ship, or freighter ship; but still out of luck for the Empire State Building).

From this we can gather that Tighten (from Megamind) is stronger than Thor with Thor’s belt on. Also, old age (personified by illusion magic as a giant cat in Norse mythology) weighs north of 19 million pounds, but less than 98.3 million.

Also that Atlas is a colossal+ creature with a strength of approximately 349 (I may have miscounted somewhere, but this is what I get for using head numbers not writing stuff down; I presumed that “colossal+” was the same x16 carrying capacity as colossal, but as I don’t have the magazine with me in which colossal+ was introduced, I’unno; a medium creature would require 369 - heyo, internet number - strength instead). If Atlas was a standard “huge” titan, he’d need a strength of 359 instead.

As an aside, we can confirm that Tighten (again, from Megamind) has a strength less than 349 as we can see the weights he struggles with (like the Empire State Building - or whatever that building was).

Now, fortified with pointless knowledge, you may go forth and conquer!

(Please note: all calculations for Thor may be off - he might be larger than medium. If so, ooooooops. I said I’m not looking at stuff, dang it!)

NobodysHome: Hey, recording manager! We tried using the SnowBall microphone that you recommended, but the sound quality was really terrible. Do you have any other microphones that you recommend?
Recording Manager: Our recommendations are here <link>.
NH: (Follows link. The only recommended microphone is the SnowBall)
NH: Er...the link you sent me lists only the SnowBall.
RM: That's right! We recommend the SnowBall for all recordings.
NH: (Sighs. Goes to the professional production group. They recommend a much higher-end microphone. NobodysHome orders it, records with it, submits it, and the professional group approves it.)
NH: (Gets asked to record for the video group, submits audio sample.)
RM: Your audio sample is OK, but we feel the quality is pretty low. Can you get yourself a SnowBall microphone?

And for some reason I'm NOT allowed to go to the office and beat him senseless with a baseball bat. Stupid law!

No, not the bat. It's too...blunt. Too...unrefined.

No.

You take that SnowBall mic to his office and you "return it to storage", if you take my meaning. Then you ask him how the sound quality is. It's probably going to be a little muffled.

You may need to adjust the microphone positioning with the bat.

7 minutes in: truly original ideas may not exist, and MatPat really likes Rick and Morty (a show which is, in my opinion, fairly okay, quality-wise - at least the first season, which is the one I saw - that goes too far up its own gross and crass humor and uncaring nihilism for me to truly enjoy - much like South Park, in many ways).

(Also Rick Sanchez is depressed, I guess. Which... yeah, that was kind of obvious from the very first episode.)

Yeah, try "Mondays while waiting for a contractor to show".

I'm impressed that in the first 4 hours of my work day, I probably got in around 2 1/2 hours of work, but that was only because of an engaging 1-hour team meeting.

Now that catching up after my week off is done and I'm supposed to actually settle down and focus on "real", productive work while at the same time keeping an ear out for my contractors to arrive while at the same time thinking about my migration to the studio is... hard...

On the bright side, I barely chipped a tooth last Monday (more like, "It just broke," because old), and I called this morning and got a perfectly-timed Wednesday afternoon appointment (Wednesdays GothBard goes to Shiro's to play in Lara Croft Guy's game, so I have no social obligations to anyone). The video group that passed judgement on my microphone apparently passed equally-annoying-if-not-more-so judgements on my colleagues, so we're doing diddly for them until we work out whether they'll accept what we give them. (They called one team member "unprepared" and the other had "a hiss" that no one except the judge can hear, so I had the "best" of the three reviews.)

Well, either way, we're made aware that a strength of 98 is almost enough for a medium creature to beat old age! Boo-yah, old age! Boo. Yah.
