It was my mother-in-law's birthday today (81).

We went to church with her (high church Episcopal, heavy on the bells and smells), and then, because she's been craving gyros but can't go to restaurants because of her multitude of food allergies and sensitivities (soul-crushing migraines generally being agreed upon as Not Much Fun), I roasted a boneless lamb shank with garlic and lemon juice, made homemade tatziki with goat yogurt (doesn't affect her or Teensy Valeros the way cow yogurt does), and took over all the fixings for gyros and a big horatiki salad. Then I made a peach crumble with no dairy, sugar, or gluten and got some Nada Moo maple-pecan "ice cream" to go with it.

The craziest part, though, was where I *thought* we had totally nailed the gift. A few months ago, she mentioned in conversation, "How I wish I had an apricot tree in the yard!" So I researched it, found a varietal of apricot that grows well in our area, discovered that now is the perfect time to plant, and found a nursery not too far that had some for sale.
And when we took her out to the yard to show her the 8' tree in the pot, ready to be planted, she said, "What is that?", followed by "Why?!?", and then, after the explanation, she said, "I did?!?" But she seemed pretty happy that we'd gotten it because she'd wished for one, even if she couldn't remember having done so.

At least she knows we went to all the effort because we love her.

Currently playing Bloodstained.

I seem to have a problem with several FPS, myself - I seem to get motion sick. It doesn't happen on all, and I've enjoyed FPS in the past (I'm looking at you, Turok: Dinosaur Hunter for the N64... even though you weren't very good), but for whatever reason many more modern FPS games tend to leave me feeling a bit sour in the stomach.

It's not a universal property, though, and I really don't understand why some leave me just feeling bad and others don't.

I was able to complete Bioshock 1&2, for instance, and enjoyed them, though I had to take breaks.

Beyond that, I'm not too interested in most shoot'em games. I'm more inclined to enjoy games if they're side-scollering platformers with shooter elements or bullet hell style than I am most FPS or even many 3rd Person shooters. But, again, exceptions apply all over the place.

As for WRPGs and JRPGs, I used to strongly prefer the latter (FFT FOREVER~!), and often find the over-all story-experience refreshing and pleasant for such games, but the former is also incredibly solid in many cases - ME 1&2 (this bypasses most motion-sickness problems I have), Dragon Age, PF: Kingmaker, Neverwinter Nights, Jade Empire, KotOR 1&2, Pillars of Eternity (never played 2), the new Shadowrun games... basically these are all excellent games I enjoy.

As for Nintendo's childishness... nah. I mean, I get it, sure. As an example from my perspective, Sponge Bob looks horribly cartoon-y and childish and is an unpleasant experience for me... but I'm informed it's really intelligent and well-made show. I'll definitely accept that. I don't see it, it doesn't feel that way, but I'll believe it because I can't watch it enough to get invested.

Nintendo titles can be quite similar. Although definitively stylized, the people of Twilight Princess, for example, do not look like any child's cartoon I've watched (though I would like to - it's gorgeous, even the absolutely and intentionally hideous Malo). And, I mean, sure, Wind Waker looks like a cartoon, but that same aesthetic has a boy running around trying to save his sister from being kidnapped, and eventually,

Spoiler!:
ramming a sword through Ganon's face

... which... not super-child-friendly.

Spoiler continued:
Though he does become a rock, which, okay, seems more "Child friendly" violence, but also feels kind of appropriately mythical.

If we include 3P titles, you have things like Last Story which don't look childish at all.

I'm going to admit: I've played neither Skyrim nor the Fallout series. Not from any sense of disdain, though - I've participated an LP of the latter (screen shots), and seen enough of the former that despite the fact that they're both FP(S), I find them neat-looking and the story that I've heard compelling. They look cool. But their appearance hasn't prompted me to go out and buy them. A combination of expense and a lack of interest of most other games on the systems has just left me not interested in going out of my way to acquire them. So nothing particularly bad, there (the FP may or may not make me motion sick - I'unno), but I just don't want to justify the cost of such. That said, indicating that such things are more mature by design reminds me when I was younger and disdained Wind Waker for being "immature" because it was it was a catroon-style. Man, I was an arrogant snot (and rather wrong).

Even if I had another console (which I wouldn't buy just for one game), why would I buy the game again? I already have it on Steam, and it's not FF6 or Chrono Trigger or any other game actually worth owning multiple copies of.

I'll need to get a new computer eventually, that one will probably be able to run it.

Yeah I get this as well. I couldn't finish Bioshock for this exact reason. I think it has, at least in part, something to do with the slight bounce that the camera has in many FPS/3PS games to simulate the character walking.

I know it's not exclusively that, because I've also gotten nauseous playing FPS games that don't have it (looking at you, Unreal Tournament). But it definitely makes the situation worse when it's present.

I don't really know why, but I've just never been able to stick with them. I can't stay interested. I know, on a conceptual level, that many of these games are extremely good. I've heard endless rants about how good Mass Effect and Dragon Age are from people whose opinions I highly value and usually agree with.

But I can't bring myself to actually play the games for any amount of time. I just lose interest.

Neverwinter Nights being an exception, given I play it exclusively for the online content on the server I've been playing and DMing and admin-ing on for years, the only WRPG I've ever actually finished is Planescape: Torment. I've started Baldur's Gate, Dragon Age 1, Mass Effect 1, and probably a few others, but never got very far in them before losing interest. I have PF: Kingmaker on my computer but have never actually started playing it. My brother had Jade Empire and I never found myself with any interest in giving it a try. I've heard a zillion great things about KOTOR and watched multiple playthroughs, but have zero desire to actually play the games myself.

Meanwhile plop down almost any JRPG in front of me and I'm hooked for hours.

I saw something this morning that pissed me off. I was driving home from work, and there was a firetruck-lights and sirens blazing-heading the other way on the interstate. It was being passed by a minivan. Who the f+%@ passes a firetruck with its lights and siren on?

Me wrote:
TL savage ranty time

I’m Re-reading my words and... ouch. Free of the time I was intending some of that sounds savage, judge mental, and extremely harsh. That is... not how it’s meant.

The short version is that I don’t find Nintendo’s perceived childishness to be a personal barrier for enjoying the deeper content of their games even as I don’t feel that others who enjoy deeper content in other things that I may perceive childishness or personally unpleasant as wrong for doing so.

I like that people like things that are different from me. I don’t have to like this things, and that doesn’t diminish their worth. Similarly, though I like it when people likely be things I like, others don’t have to feel the same way about them - that doesn’t diminish their worth.

Subjective opinions are subjective, and that’s super okay. Don’t like the art style and can’t get into it because of it? Super fair. I happen to enjoy that style, but that doesn’t mean everyone should. Similarly, I know of a couple of things people like that I just don’t and can’t get into - I don’t think there is anything wrong with liking those things, it’s just not something that I enjoy for my own reasons.

Hopefully that moderates the timeless version of my post above. It’s what I was trying to say, anyway, by giving specific examples of things I like.

Two more real quick examples of mature things in seemingly cartoony packages:
- Avatar: the Last Airbender
- Final Fantasy Tactics

One of those is family friendly and one is not, but both have a (potentially) cartoonish flare to their presentation. FFT’s artwork is pretty gorgeous, but it’s spritework is just so flippin’ adorable.

Anyway, that’s all. I’ve kept myself awake coughing enough and flipped on my phone to re-read my post and realized how harsh it sounded. Sorry!

Okay, their outfits didn’t look mature. It’s pretty hilarious, really. Freehold would love it.

(In a fit of immaturijty, I swapped most of the guys’ and girls’ outfits to “even out” the amount of skin showing. It didn’t work, but the funniest joke to me for reasons that remain unclear is that putting the one girl’s outfit on the haughty arrogant mage guy basically had him waking around in a Speedo, which was even more revealing than the girl had. Why? No clue. It was dumber than a bag of hammers but makes me laugh almost every time. So, yeah, not exactly mature...)

I love WRPGs. I love traditional, trope and cliché-rammed WRPGs.

Baldurs Gate I and II are two of my special favourites, Icewind Dale I less so, as it's a bit of a grind-fest. I preferred Icewind Dale II.

Pillars of Eternity I and II were worthy successors to the BG games.

Neverwinter Nights I and II were also good, appalling weaponry aesthetics aside.

Dragon Age: Origins I liked; II was also enjoyable, though I can no longer get it to work. Not played Inquisition.

The Elder Scrolls games were fab, with Morrowind coming top in terms of setting & atmosphere, for sure.

Never owned a console, so can't comment on those, nor do I play MMORPGs

I would, but I have exactly zero plans to actually use my IRL PSP, so it should probably go to someone else!

-----------------------------------

Also, Raising Dion suddenly went from "gritty/cute super hero-esque origin story of a kid, starring kid's mom" to "terrifying ghost story with dark magic" real quick. (As of the opening of episode 2.)

EDIT:

Bumping down for easier reading

Irony: in Age of Mythology everyone has better combat abilities than Norse gods.

I can:
- create a gold mine (that anyone can use)
- burn down a forest (even though I need those)
- temporarily freeze a bunch of enemies (who don't move, but become invincible during this time, just delaying the inevitable)
- summon some weak wolves to attack up to four town centers

I mean, this compares to:
- summoning a fire-breathing earth dragon (Chinese)
- summoning meteors from the ever-lovin' sky (Egyptian)
- the ability to open a gate to hell to unleash an unlimited number of danger-dogs that attack and kill everyone in a wide radius (Atlantean)

... to name a few.

The kicker is, that thing with the gold mine? Yeah, that's Thor's special ability. I mean: WAT! No Mjolnir?! Bah!

I know, I know, Zeus has the thunderbolt thing, but seriously, reverse the effects! Mjolnir instaslays (or maybe severely weakens, like, say 80% health off) a single titan, or takes 20% off the health of anything else. This seems relatively balanced, and in keeping with his myths, as, though Titans are really big deals, you're going to have to save your Mjolnir to the end game to really do your thing.

Ironically, given my name, the extra resources and resource management effects are actually rather strong tactics to utilize, but you need wood, so burning down a forest is... rough. Especially when you realize that you can't target areas you don't have actual units. So you have to send one or more units to see the forest you want to burn down. Also, I've run through four of the five pantheons so far, and the Norse are (weirdly) the only one of those four not to have the eventual unlock ability to see all units on the map. Why? I don't know.

(Of course, I may be running a glitch version right now, because I have a castle "hill fort" left, and it's attacking this one town it's next to via arrows-or-whatever, and there are two enemy titans and a vast military force and they can't be bothered to come destroy my castle "hill fort" so I might be stuck in an endless game until I delete my own castle "hill fort" because the A.I. be dumb.)

Anyway, it's a weird thing that I'm a bit salty about.

Also, playing Egyptians is amazing because you totally get to feel like the bad guys: you summon hordes of undead to attack the living, nuke various town centers, and create hordes of undead... that produce more undead from the things you slay. It's kind of hilarious. I don't know if I like it or hate it.

HAH!

I just mean that whoever writes his stuff knows kids really well. Most tv kids don't really remind me of my own children. Dion really, really does.

It's lovely.

(He's not a perfect representation of a kid - few written children really are - but it feels genuine enough that I adore it. The actor, Ja'Siah Young, does a really fantastic job, and the things that he goes through as a kid and things his mom goes through as a mom are super-relatable, even with my extremely different life events and backgrounds.)

Gotta say, I liked Pat in episode 1+, but as the series goes on, I like him less. It's a subtle thing - there are still things I like, but he's just kind of... slipping as a likeable character.

Otherwise I still like the characters over-all, that's just one characterization I'm cooling on.
