So my five-year-old child says to me this morning...
"Dad. You got to see on my pillow." As he's relaxing on the living room couch. He threw up in the middle of the night. Not a fun way to start off the morning. And I really feel like "Worst Dad of the Year" since he was sleeping in it for much of the night.

Unfortunately, for the short-term I'll be *further* from my family. Oddly, though, my wife likes Atlanta more than Charlotte, so I think she'll figure out a way to get down there earlier rather than later. That just leaves my son up in Kernersville, NC, to finish his senior year, which will be good and bad for him.

When I accept an offer, there is generally no counter offer I will accept - because they are aware I was looking, and ready to leave. And I assume they will pay to keep me because they think that they will need more than two weeks to replace me, and they would rather lose me on their terms...nevermind I'm then without any job opportunities. Because that's not their problem.

No, I fully endorse this- NEVER take a counter-offer. In my experience, there is usually some wriggling in the details saying that you will not leave the position until a set date, which may or may not be legal nowadays.

I understand that. I took a counteroffer once, and I regretted it, but at that time I wanted to leave the company and I really should have just walked away.
In this situation, I am contracting, and I had communicated my desire to go full time, and my boss was searching for ways to make that happen. I think he thought he had more time, since my 12-month contract (which was up at the end of May) was extremely likely to get renewed for 6 months. I didn't communicate anything to my boss about looking until I turned in my notice, which is how I would have approached things if I was already full-time.
Bleh.
Yeah, my only experience with a similar situation was with a boss that was repeatedly hiring people, only to fire them months later to hire personal friends. I was useful to the company - I had training and knowledge no one else had, and was doing some intense customer facing work at the moment - but I was under no illusion that my position was stable.
The owner was an excellent salesman. Not necessarily a good businessman, but his ability to talk people into things let him limp along despite some crazy decistions (let's focus on the $2000 customer to the detriment of the $500,000 customer!).
Again, in my experience, good salesman very rarely equals good businessman.

Maybe. But my wife took the firm that first hired her up on a counter-offer when she told them she had an offer from PWC, and I think she she is much happier than she would have been had she left. ::Shrugs::

Found out at the game I attend in manhattan bi-weekly that a good friend of mine's little brother passed away suddenly of a heart attack that was brought on by the flu. He was only 26- younger than all of us. I will be going to my friend's house today to see if there is anything I can do- I doubt I can make the funeral tomorrow, as it is during my work hours, but I will be sitting shiva with him probably a bit on Wednesday(have to go to the second job, I can't get out of either job I don't think due to the fact that I was on vacation recently), Thursday, and a bit on Friday(second job again later on in the evening). Also discovered at the game that the DM and one of the players will be moving away to California and Pennsylvania respectively. And I only JUST found out that one loves Final Fantasy 7 and the other loves Buffy!! How can I possibly squeeze in untold months of Haterade(tm) into the time before they leave? I'll try...but they warned me that I or my character may end up badly beaten on a lonely road somewhere...Ack. I'm trying to inject humor into places to keep myself from becoming overly maudlin, but its failing moreso than succeeding. Meh.
That's rough. It's always sad to see something like that happen, and on the gaming side of things (admittedly less important) it's odd to see how the group dynamics shift when people leave.
Sorry it's been a rough couple of days.
