That may have been intentional. Maybe. I'll just go...can you hand me my shirt from over there? And...yeah...no, that's not my sock...

Well, let me put it this way: I'm only pretty sure that I'm older than it by a few years (less than 10), so it's done its job.

I got the quote, and the markup over buying it and doing it myself is amazingly steep (250%, or 3.5x retail price), but you have to figure there's a whole bunch of licensing and insurance going on, plus permits, inspection, etc., so it's "within the realm of reasonable".

And for those who are curious, the old model has a pilot light, hence a gas knob, and the knob's been a bit leaky for years. This year the spring and seal finally gave out and if you turn the knob past "pilot" it spews gas, which the pilot then ignites, leading to a fun burny knob you get to try to turn off before it melts open.

As I said, "Repair this 40+-year-old heater" just doesn't seem like the wise choice.

Wow yeah better replace it!

Well, feeling better about the quoted price.

I was thinking, "It'll be this much, max!" and it was 5% over my guess.

I just finished IMing with Shiro, and his immediate statement (without my saying anything) was, "That'll cost you xxx" and he made the exact same guess, and he said 3x item price was absolutely typical.

You haven't lived until you've spent three days installing marble bricks as flower bed edging in 35 degree muck.

And I'm not just saying that to trick someone into doing it so someone else can feel my pain.

Definitely not that.

Unrelated, my back is quite sore.

Well. Mortgage stuff is officially completely out of my hands. Waiting on the underwriter but should hear back no later than next week.

We did cloak and dagger tonight. I got a proper old stabbing when I tried it in sparring, which I can choose to blame on either poor technique or the enormous size of my opponent's cloak.

Here's what you do in Canada in the winter: watch the following two videos!

- An incredibly worthwhile 60 minutes.

- An incredibly worthwhile 16 minute follow-up.

(It's about YouTube algorithms - and algorithms in general - but it is rather on-point. I am one of those who follows various Let's Players, and I think he's a bit off on that... not because he's wrong, but because he finds something scary that he doesn't relate to, rather than recognizing the actual benefits of such a group. But he's still very accurate and very well-researched and well-spoken.)

I'm happy our biggest nature problem is being several feet below sea level.

Yeahhh,...

Being below sea level, and Katrina, is one reason I refused to move back to New Orleans afterwords. I live 2 hours to the side, near enough to visit the wife's family, far enough I dont have to worry about swimming home from work one day! ;P
We dutch take our water security very serious.

Frighteningly

seriously

Wow,...

On the other hand, I wish that New Orleans would take it's water/flooding/below sea level problem (more?) seriously.
(OK, they TRY to, but the politics is insane, and the money keeps vanishing,...Really, it's like that portal in the links above are real, except in the Louisiana State Bank accounts) ;P

My Dad would b*@%! about the corruption in NO all the time. It is a shame that something can't be done about it.

Heh, as I've mentioned, Im not from Lousy-Anna (Hence my willingness to talk smack about it) But I married a NO girl. I should have realized what I was getting into when my then-future-Father-In-law told me,...

"This is Louisiana. We don't care about good government. We just want good entertainment!"

Yes, Thats been my understanding since I've joined the joyful association of those who own their own home. ;P

Sadly, most times the majority of the cost is in LABOR, no matter how cheap or expensive the device or parts are, or the aforementioned insurance/licensing, etc. The cost of getting someone else to do it for you is where it hits the old pocketbook hardest.

And when it comes to technically/mechanically inclined, I am fairly competent. But there are some things I fear that I can't afford to get wrong.

Replace the aging electric range top with a new one myself? NO problem!
Replace a ceiling fan? Install new lights in the ceiling? I got that!

Hmm,... ANYTHING to do with natural gas?!?,..... Hrm,...
Nope. Calling somebody. IF anything goes wrong and my insurance company has to ask me WHY they have to replace my house, I want plausible deniability!
:D

(OK< a few years ago I did re-fit the existing gas line on the back porch with a new end to fit the new line for my new grill, but I was paranoia-level safe about it, and thats as FAR as I will go with that!)
;P

I'm with you there. Doing most electrical work I have no issues with. Natural gas lines I'd rather not mess with. I have. I'd really rather not. And yeah, if it does go wrong and things go seriously sideways...if you have a pro do it and they screw up your insurance will pay out and go after their insurance. If you did it yourself...well...I wish you the best of luck.

And I try to skip plumbing. Most plumbing issues are just gross.

You know, I kind of feel a strange sense of accomplishment to get that kind of reaction from Freehold. Also, it makes me worried about my own mental health that I can do so.

I must 110% agree with you there Van!

I'll do it if I Must, (Capitol M, and if I have the right tools) but I will NOT enjoy it! Bleecch!

I'm lucky, I have a friend at my church who has his own plumbing business.
BUT after so many calls, (and yes, I am paying for them) I just feel bad about bugging him about some of my consistent issues. (My Kitchen sink has been behaving like a b!@#$ for the last few months now) and am resigning myself to the fact that he doesn't own ALL of the equipment, and I will have to end up calling a bigger company to fix the actual problem.

Eventually. ;P

1) Shoveling sucks. Get a snowblower if you can and it's not as bad.

2) Driving in the winter isn't a bad experience with winter tires. Seriously makes all the difference in the world, and even makes a bit of a difference on ice (depending on the tire) - I'm not saying don't be careful, but I'm saying everything is easier with winter tires if you can afford them for your car. All Season tires are...how shall I put this...not actually good at anything.

I've driven in every snow storm for the last 15 years, as long as you're careful and you avoid steep hills you should be fine.
