It's so weird.

Saturdays don't die like this, so it isn't a weekend thing or a "we got f#&%ed up last night and are hungover" thing. Mondays through Thursdays don't die like this, so it isn't a "work tomorrow" thing.

The only explanation I can think of is tradition for tradition's sake (also known as "just arbitrary").

I’m more guessing it’s a final break and recovery day reinforced by arbitrary tradition (which isn’t necessarily a bad thing, though it can be). So, “just arbitrary” but with an internally reinforcing system of “people need rest so this is probably the day.”

And I’m wearing clothes.

I got back into yoga the past few days. I'm rusty, but I still got most of it. My full lotus is uncomfortable, but functional - I practice with a half and will be back to full without discomfort in a few days, I'm sure. Tala is excited to try it with the whole preggers benefits, so teaching her will get myself in better shape.

I also want to start up some Tai Chi, but it's a bit harder to self-start than yoga (which I started long ago in my 20s and did off and on for over a decade).

In other news, I am giving up video games until my lil one is born. Can't be spending all day staring at a screen when I got work to do. I'm tired of being fat, and don't exercise enough. I bike far less than I should (my "riding by" is usually on my motor scooter), and am far larger than when I first moved up here. Part of that was seroquel and depakote, which I haven't been on for a while, but that only stopped me gaining - I still haven't slimmed back where I was.

Further, soda is out the door. Too many times I dropped it partially - and it always edges back to full consumption. We have only water, unsweetened tea, black coffee, milk and juice in the house - the juice is for Tala. I was limiting myself to "only out the house" but...well...I kept using leaving the house as a REASON to have one, and...snowball.

As I approach age 40 I don't wanna be that guy who has a cannonball in my shirt. I used to wear a 32 waist with room to wiggle as I rounded towards age 30. I was thinner than high school (though that's like being taller than a halfling). Now? Before I got off the meds I was the fattest of my life. I can suck it in and hide my belly, but I remember when I didn't have to - and it felt good.

So I put my foot down. For my kid's sake I wanna live as long as possible, and set a good example about how to be healthy.

I know what to do. I lost crazy weight in my 20s. It happens fast when I actually try. The hard part is trying. My ex used to push me. Tala is more of a follower - if I get lazy, she doesn't so much push as follow suit.

So...I guess I'm saying I could use some encouragement and such.

Another rainy morning.

I don't mind the rainy part as much as the morning part. Also, I need to go out.

Of course getting paid to play game is balancing it a bit.

You can do it VE! Cutting sugar out of your diet will help immensely, and it gets easier if you stick to it. When I dropped sugar, the cravings were real for a while, but its easy not to snack now. And just dropping sugar was enough to start weight loss for me. And I have a sit-on-my-ass desk job.

Just dont buy the soda, and have Talia smack you if you even look at a bottle.

I've almost entirely managed to cut out soda by switching to flavored seltzer water... it's cold fizzy liquid in a can with no sugar, artificial sweeteners, or calories. As a bonus, it doesn't taste like water. I don't like drinking water.

Dropping sugar is a lot harder in the US. It (or high-fructose corn syrup)'s in everything.

Humor at the U.S. President's Expense:
GothBard and I were discussing the strange conceit among the President's supporters that, from Chinese trade to regime change in Iran to illegal immigration, he is the first President to actually try to do anything about any of those issues. The reality is that every President, Republican or Democrat has tried to do something, they just didn't Tweet about it.

Leading to:
Trump Crossing the Delaware:
TWEET #1: We are secretly bringing the army across the Delaware to take those dirty Brits by surprise! We will be victorious very soon!

TWEET #2: The Redcoats knew we were coming! There is a traitor among us! We have been betrayed!

...aaaand, I'd offer the Midwest my condolences, as it is now September (aka Pumpkin Spice Season), but apparently I am not immune.

We visited GothBard's mother in Half Moon Bay over the weekend, and our bathroom soap now smells like wet rotting pumpkins.

Ah, well, I'll just leave out lots of dirty, sticky things to attract the kids so they have to wash their hands more often.

And re: Sugar, yeah. The simple fact that it is nigh-impossible to get even things like ketchup or marinara sauce without sugar/corn syrup in them is downright depressing. If you don't prepare everything from scratch at home, you're getting too much sugar in your diet, period.

Yesterday for Shiro's game we got Japanese takeout. And even the ramen had been sweetened.

For someone who's fairly strongly sugar-sensitive, it was nasty.

And final weird note before work: We own a Bose Wavetouch. Every so often, it stops being able to receive Spotify feeds. I finally Googled it. Apparently when Windows 10 updates, it sends out all kinds of nonsense on the local network telling all the other devices to reset themselves or some such, causing the Wavetouch to become confused so you have to reboot it.

I tried, and it works like a charm.

So yes, now my Windows Updates are even impacting non-Windows devices. WTH, Microsoft?

I cannot physically take the printer apart far enough (without damaging), using tools (short of an acetylene torch), to clear an envelope jam. I hate this. I can see at least a dozen envelopes jammed in there. This printer is only about a year old.

I'd love to blame Apple for this approach, but car manufacturers started doing it long before computer companies did: Seal everything up so end users, no matter how technical, cannot perform their own repairs, thus generating revenue for your service department.

I still remember taking apart my original blueberry iBook to replace the CD drive with a DVD drive. Removing the drive involved using a razor to cut out a large amount of double-sided tape and glue. Of course they claim that all that tape and glue is to keep the parts from rattling around during transport. It's actually to prevent end user repairs.

So, I gave my kiddos a short project: pick one of eight Romantic short stories from this list. Take notes, make a visual, and tell me about it.

It took no time at all for the kids to open the PDFs and realize two in particular were far shorter than the others.

So I've sat through about ten presentations on "The Masque of the Red Death" already today, and I still have two periods left, where I will no doubt hear more. I may never want to hear about it again.

...what gets me is that I had kids who went after the others who were still freezing when I asked them the theme and Romanticism tie-ins.

I'm going to say... hm... that the masque... is like... what super-heroes wear... and death... is bloody... so it's red... like love hearts... and Thanos... romanced death... and fought super-heroes... and captain America was a super-hero with a mask... and had red in his costume... and danced with that one woman from about ten movies ago... so... it's romantic!

Oh! Oh! And Daredevil wears a red masque as a super-hero, but he struggles with romance! Yeah! Acin' it!

Sometimes it is not about whether they know the answer, but rather, the difficulty lies in speaking in front of the class. Public speaking is a skill that is frequently neglected in our educational systems (IMO).

My policy debate years are long ago, but they were invaluable.

I have to admit, I don't remember either Rappaccini's Daughter or The Birthmark. Gotta go look those up.

EDIT: Hm. I remember Rappaccini's Daughter, now, though it's been a while and I mostly remember a vague sense of not liking it much.

I really don't remember the Birth-Mark, but it sounds exactly like the kind of story I'd hate.
