Actually, yes, they do exist. They just don't exist at the price point of White Castle and Old Country Buffet. Or Denny's. Or Waffle House.

I think "consistently good" is a high bar for the U.S.

For example, Chevy's fajitas and margaritas are consistently good. Unfortunately, the rest of the restaurant falls far short of even that low bar. I've heard similar things about other "high end" restaurants such as Chili's, Tony Roma's, and the Outback Steakhouse: *IF* you know what to order, you can get good food.

There's a reason we're foodies who eat out almost every single week and yet we don't ever eat at chain restaurants.

Not national chains. Although Bennigan's used to do a pretty good Monte Cristo.

Many people swear by the superiority of their regional chains (like Texans and their Whataburger, which was just bought by a Chicago bank, leading to widespread ire on the Book of Faces, which was very, very funny), or Californians and their In-and-Out (hush, Freehold).

IMHO, the only good "chains" in the U.S. are the smaller, family-owned local franchises. Here in the Dallas area, for example, we have a Tex-Mex chain that has been owned and run by the same family for 100 years. (Yes, I know that 100 years is nothing to you Brits, but for us, it's a big deal.) While it's still a pretty low price point and you don't order the house margaritas because the alcohol content is so low that Orthos and Tac could probably drink them, the food itself is pretty good.

I wouldn't put Outback in that category - yes, it's a chain, no question, but I think the only real gripe there is that it isn't quite worth what they're charging. I personally haven't had anything there that I would put in the same inconsistent or down-right inedible categories like an Applebee's, TGIF, or Chili's.

I think everyone, even the most unrepentant foodie, has their garbage food they can't let go of. Consider NH and GothBard and their chili dogs and the mini crockpot of Que Bueno on game days. Why? BECAUSE IT'S FREAKING AWESOME.

I won't eat at Waffle House or Tony Roma's (shudder), but I adore White Castle, and I will happily eat any drive-thru fried chicken sandwich with extra mayo, anywhere, anytime. (except Chick-fil-A, even though it's great, because politics.)

But when I cook for myself or my family, my standards are a teensy bit higher.

Don't get me started on Chili's. I was a bar waitress there during college, and every single soup came in a pre-made frozen brick the size of a cinder block. All the sauces and dressings came pre-made in gallon jugs. It was nasty. As broke as I was, I almost never ordered a shift meal.

Beyond politics, I've never been impressed by their food. It's just chicken, a slice of pickle, and a touch of butter.

I'm not above some garbage food (there's a local BBQ place that does a bacon-wrapped fried hot dog covered in their chili) - but Freehold likes both White Castle and Waffle House. This I cannot condone.

Been a while since I had white castle. May have some today.

Also, in my neighborhood, the white castle is across the street from a Dennys. Which is across the street from a motel no tell.

Which is PERFECT atmosphere.

I think it also depends on price point and definition of good.

Ruth Chris? Mortons? Consistently good. Maybe not always sublime, but I have had a few such meals at each of those locales.

Wendy's - solid 6 on a 10 point scale. But note price point and expectations.
Five Guys - solid 6.5. Again, price point and expectations.

The interchangeable TGIFridays/chilis/applebees/ocharleys type places at the slightly higher price point and commensurate expectations - meh.

Oh...additional Outback info...Dad, back when he was a functioning alcoholic in the late '90s and early '00s, was a health and safety inspector for an insurance company. Outback was insured through his company, and he inspected a few of their restaurants. He had no issues continuing to eat at any Outback after that experience.

(1) Oh, yeah. Slack really is for slacking off. GothBard says that her company uses it to share silly animated gifs and cool Twitter feeds. I think that's what it's used for here as well, but as a result people LOVE it and get really evangelical about it. It's one of those, "I'm in love with this software and if you don't like it you're a horrible person," things that I just don't understand.

(2) I think we have a winner: Morton's is a chain restaurant that is consistently good. But at $80-$100 per person, it's not exactly at a "friendly" price point where most families could eat there once or twice a month...
...and Alexander's is better, though I don't know whether Alexander's is national or just regional at the moment.

Maybe it's just because it was at Hilltop Mall in Richmond (a well-known dive where chain stores go to die), but hoo, boy. I have. I have in spades.

It could have been that location. I know that, while I love Steak n Shake, I would never go back to the one St. Augustine because it was terrible.

Aiymi's company uses Slack for all internal communications.

So the slacking memes and silly stuff is on there.

The important company info about a client's issues is on there.

She therefore has about 150 different Slack channels that she has to keep up with throughout the day. It's ridiculous.

Well, speaking of work, I have to go, but yes. This exactly. The PMs and so forth say that Slack is SO much nicer because they're no longer dealing with 500-600 new emails a day and they can focus on the channels in which they're interested.

OK, that's all well and good, but for the other 90% of the company my 15-20 emails a day has become a dozen different channels over 3 workspaces with constant nonsense chatter that I have to filter and throw out. YOUR productivity might have gone up, but at the cost of the rest of us who weren't getting overwhelmed by emails.

Dear User:
Telling me you need a new toner cartridge elicits a different response from me than telling me you have a new toner cartridge and your printer is not printing cleanly.

Ticket said "I need a new toner cartridge." Therefore, I told her where to find one.

She replied with "You aren't even going to look at my printer?"

Why would I? You said you need a toner cartridge.

"No, I just did change the toner cartridge and it's sending stuff all over the page."

I understand when people don't actually know the issue. But..."I need a new toner" is nowhere close to the same thing as "after changing my toner it doesn't print right".
