Also, I got another anthology of short stories today and the first story was by second favorite author Paul S. Kemp, outlining how Resson Kel, villain extraordinaire, stole the sun.
Woot! Everis Cale and friends for the win! Best Forgotten Realms author ever is Kemp.
What short story anthology is it? I want to read!

Nintendo are being jackanapes again. This time they're taking down all their game music on Youtube, including the extended versions by BrawlBRSTM. Because they can, more or less.
That's like 90% of what I listen to these days.
Godsdammit Nintendo. It's not the 80s anymore!
This may cause GothBard to go to war. She LOVES all the variants on the Bravely Default theme song...

In other news, how to properly handle a late package, brought to you by Amazon:
"Dear Mr. Home. We're sorry your package didn't arrive today, but it's still with our carrier and should arrive within the next 1-2 days."
That's really ALL it takes, rather than, "We delivered your package. Too bad you don't see it! Nyah!"
I finally realized that it incenses me so much because oftentimes when you're ordering fragile things (such as electronics) the seller will have a disclaimer along the lines of, "If the package is damaged in any way, you must refuse it. If you accept delivery, you cannot file a claim for damage in transit," or some such.
So if the deliveryperson marks it as delivered without ever delivering it, you're hosed.

I didn't know she was a fan. I have been meaning to get into Bravely Default! I will have to get a copy now as it is so highly recommended by an esteemed abscondee!

I actually can't remember. I know, historically, her two call backs are Brazil and Portugal. Brazil, because that's where she's from, and Portugal, because she speaks fluent Portuguese (because she's from Brazil). I also think it's because she keeps saying the cost of living (rent & food costs) are so much cheaper there than in Ireland.

Pretty much. As a Pokemon fan this is far from new news. And Metroid. And Zelda. And....
And it's such a shame, as Nintendo is the only major console company still making the games I like. And many of their products continue to be masterpieces.
But that praise is pretty much exclusively reserved for Miyamoto and the rest of the game making teams. The management and senior executives of the company are immensely out of date and out of touch, and increasingly hostile toward their fan base, especially in the west.
We didn't have these problems when Iwata was alive, at least not to this extreme. Just saying.

Income would be equally lower though, wouldn't it? Presuming a job could be found quickly to begin with, on top of all the other problems with relocation.

That makes her reasoning make more sense. Cost of living is one thing, but it felt like Portugal was a bit of throwing a dart at a map and going wherever it landed. A person in the US, Canada, UK, Ireland, France, Germany, etc, can pick a lot of places that have a lower cost of living, and Portugal isn't usually in the first 15 places that people come up with.
It's still a drastic plan, and one that can be quite difficult for the kid. Completely turning life upside down without the adult understanding of why.
I've never been in a similar situation. Rough and broken relationships, yes, but not one where she wanted to take my child to another country. I don't know what kind of legal recourse you have given your marital status and Irish laws, but you should look into it. But if you do follow that route, keep in mind the effect that will have on your child as well.
There are no good or easy solutions to this, for anybody involved.

Not that that route is my preference. I'd prefer us to work this out somehow. I don't want either of them to leave the country if I can do anything to help it. I want to do what's best for our son, and also us, and living in separate countries isn't that.

Do you have time to talk about my lord and master, Richard Lee Byers?
Start with the Rage, The Rite and The Ruin series. It takes place in the Forgotten Realms. It is available as a collection on Amazon.
He has also written for White Wolf, and has a collection of short stories and poems and the like that take place in no official universe called Things That Crawl.

There seems to be a generational issue with respect to attitudes towards the west and exports. The senior management nowadays seems to be of the generation that is confused by American fans of Japanese things at best, or does not care for America at worst. As a tangentially related aside, the company has stopped short of saying "if you want it, import it so we see some money!", but I think that is a prevalent attitude as well. For all the complaints against piracy, if there are no VIABLE legal options(note the word I am stressing here) piracy is going to happen no matter what.

...aaaand today, a different Amazon delivery person showed up at my door with a box that had burst open, and she was taking pictures and putting a label on it to indicate that she'd delivered it damaged, then profusely apologized to me for it.
It was the Samsonite luggage. As I told her, if it couldn't survive Amazon's ministrations, it sure as heck wasn't going to survive the trip to Europe, so we were good.
And I thanked her for her honesty, she gave me a HUGE charming smile, and went on her way.
And I'm happy, and Amazon's not on my s*** list, and the USPS is.
Stuff happens. Just be honest and TELL me about it!

So this is going to be a very niche comment, but you know when something sucker punches you in the feels out of the blue? When I was a kid in the 90s, my mom loved those Pavarotti & Friends concerts, and Se è Vero Che Ci Sei has always been a favorite based on sound alone. I don't speak Italian, I had no idea what it meant; it was just a great duet.
Then recently I bought that concert album for myself, and finally googled a translation of the lyrics and had a near-religious experience.
Lyrics:
If it's true that you're here
Sometimes I look at the sea
This eternal movement
But two eyes are not enough for this immensity
And I understand how to be alone
And I wander in the world
But I realise that two legs are not enough
To turn and return it
And if it's true that you're here
Drop a line, my love
I need to share
All this together with you
Sometimes I look at the sky
Its mysteries and its stars
But too many of my nights have passed without you
To try to count them
And if it's true that you're here
I go in search of your eyes
Like nothing I've ever searched for before
And perhaps nothing I've ever had
It's a message for you
I am calling for you
I am searching for you
I am lonely and you know
It's a message for you
I am inventing you
Before the moon changes
And (before) it's spring ...
And if it's true that you're here
With your eyes and your legs
I would succeed in turning the world
And in seeing that immensity
But if it's true that you're here
To chase away the loneliness of this man
Who understood his limit in the world
It's a message for you
I am calling for you
I am searching for you
I am lonely and you know
It's a message for you
I am inventing you
Before the moon changes
And (before) it's spring ...
Sometimes I look at the sea
This eternal movement
But two eyes are not enough for this immensity
And I understand how to be alone.
I don't know whether it's a religious song or if it's about Human longing, but it slammed me right in the feels.

No worries, one thing I learned is, a new moped is incredibly cheap in Wisconsin.
Which is surely unrelated to the 6-7 months of winter.
So, the dream still lives, it's just put off a little longer.

When Beethoven passed away, he was buried in a churchyard. A couple days later, the town drunk was walking through the cemetery and heard some strange noise coming from the area where Beethoven was buried. Terrified, the drunk ran and got the priest to come and listen to it. The priest bent close to the grave and heard some faint, unrecognizable music coming from the grave.
Frightened, the priest ran and got the town magistrate.
When the magistrate arrived, he bent his ear to the grave, listened for a moment, and said, "Ah, yes, that's Beethoven's Ninth Symphony, being played backwards."
He listened a while longer, and said, "There's the Eighth Symphony, and it's backwards, too. Most puzzling."
So the magistrate kept listening, "There's the Seventh... the Sixth... the Fifth..."
Suddenly the realization of what was happening dawned on the magistrate.
He stood up and announced to the crowd that had gathered in the cemetery, "My fellow citizens, there's nothing to worry about. It's just Beethoven decomposing."
