It really sucks being the only responsible one in a larger group.

As I mentioned, my older brother's lifelong friend passed away on Valentine's Day. So GothBard just forwarded me an email from another member of that group asking, "Hey, where's xxx? I've been trying to get in touch with him for days and he hasn't responded!"

And yep, nobody had the guts to tell him the truth, so I just had the joy of informing someone by fricking email that his longtime friend had passed away.

Thanks, brother's friends, for being so spineless and letting me be the jerk on that one. That was quite enjoyable, thanks.

But yeah, I gave him my phone number so he could call me if he needed someone to talk to, 'cause at least I know *I'll* answer the phone and give him a shoulder to cry on.

Mutter... mutter... stupid brother... stupid brother's friends...

damn.

Clocking out and going home. Good night, everyone.

Dude, just got done watching Triple Frontier on Netflix, great movie. Has a moral lesson on the nature of greed as well without ever getting preachy about it. Two thumbs up.

I did not expect Triple Frontier to be as good as it was, nor for Affleck's character to precipitate things the way he did! Recommendation seconded, and another score for Netflix.

Glad you're digging Love, Death & Robots btw, I hope there's more to come. :)

Yeah, good stuff.

Love, Death, and Robots is great. The first episode had me feeling a little ho hum until the double twists, talk about empowered women!

I've been watching that. it reminds me of the animatrix.

Had a good time at game tonight. Another character and I were hiding in a forge room when we heard some people coming our way. He wild shaped into a bat and flew up into the ceiling. I said "I pick up two of the molds we saw, stand in the corner, holding one front of my face and the other in front of my junk." I did this because we knew that the people coming probably weren't a threat (a new ally and an old friend of hers). The GM asked for a Disguise check. I got a 5. So she said "You stand there, sure that you are indistinguishable from a mold rack, and hear the door open. There is a brief pause, and then you hear laughter as (new ally) sees you. After catching her breath, she asks if there is anyone else in the room." I replied "Yes. Noodles is in here too." "Really? Where?" "He's Batman."

Obviously it was funnier if you were there, but I thought someone here might get a chuckle.

we've been sold out since 8:00 I've already had 20+ people come in in the last hour looking for a room. crazy night.

I'm not usually at work on Fridays, but so far it's all been quiet. No arrivals left to come in (the last one came in less than 5 minutes after I walked in the door), and have plenty of rooms if someone does come by.

Proud poppa bragging moment:

So, Impus Major is a total slacker. He *almost* totally forgot that he was supposed to even be taking the SAT.

So we're talking NO studying at all. He never once even looked at a practice test. It was, quite literally, wake up one morning after a late night out, stagger in, and answer a few questions.

Under those circumstances, I consider a 1260 (690 English, so 93rd percentile, and 570 Math, so 73rd percentile) not just respectable but downright incredible.

Seems like if he'd actually prepared or studied or cared he probably would have been able to break 1400.

Little tyke's smarter than he lets on...

I don't think I would have bothered to study for a SAT test either, I dunno where to start. I know for the GEP test, I didn't study either and was offered a chance for selection but couldn't be arsed to go for selection test. What?

For all I hate maths, I'm NOT stupid.

I had a study booklet for it but I can honestly say that booklet did not help me in the least.

I didn't take the SAT, I took the ACT instead. Didn't really study, did one practice exam and maybe part of another one. Still did pretty good.

Yeah my numbers were all really good. I think so much of that is just knowing how to take a test more so then what they actually want you to know.

I think being relaxed also helps. I went with a couple of other people when I took it, and they were so stressed out that I'm sure they didn't do as well as if they were more relaxed. They were acting like it was life and death. I went in with the mindset of "Hey, if I do poorly, I'll just take it again in a month or so. Annoying, but not a big deal. Plus, I'll know what I need to focus on." But when I saw my score was 32 (out of 36 possible) I figured that was good enough.

Get off work? Dude, you got a laundry room full of hand towels and access to an ice machine. Get to it.

On an unrelated note, I really hate our reservation system sometimes. Like right now, we are oversold by 4 King rooms tomorrow night (we have plenty of other rooms to move people into, so not a huge deal), but central shows us as having 4 available to sell. So anyone who makes a reservation in any way other than calling us directly can book a room that doesn't exist. And there ain't a g%$ d+$ned thing I can do about it.

I hate third party reservations. I've had to struggle with 3 of them tonight. The people were lucky I found them a room. Heck one of them had been cancelled by the third party without letting the guest know.

Reservations are important people but please call the hotel directly.

5 people marked this as a favorite.

Yep. Third parties suck. Call us directly, or at the very least use the official website/app. Using anything else is just asking for trouble.

And sometimes it's just that guest doesn't understand the limitations third party reservations put on us. For instance, at every hotel I've worked at, it's been drummed into us that "If someone makes their reservation through a third party site, you have to give them the room type they reserved. No substitutions. No upgrades." So sometimes someone will come in with a reservation for a king, but want to change to two queens, but we can't because they used a third party and we have to give them the king. Or they ask about an upgrade to a nicer room, and we can't do that because it was third party. We aren't doing it to be dicks, either. It's because, again as I understand it, if we don't give you the room type you reserved, then the third party can claim we violated the terms of our contract and refuse to pay us for the room. That's also why we can't change the date of the reservation, or cancel it. You have to contact the booking site and try to get them to do it, which may result in various fees and annoyances (like being put on hold for god knows how long). All of which could have been avoided by booking through us directly, instead of trying to save a few bucks.

In all fairness, it's not just price, it's convenience.

When planning our European trip, GothBard was able to go to Booking.com, say, "I want to stay in this part of the city on these dates," and see all the hotels, their ratings, and their prices. We have no brand loyalty nor memberships; we just want a good hotel in a good location.

So yes, she could have figured out which hotel she wanted, then gone to their site and booked directly (and on some occasions she did just that because she didn't like what booking.com had to offer), but that's an extra step most people won't even think about.

So it's all about convenience; I don't want to stay at your hotel; I want to stay at a hotel, and most hotel web sites don't say, "And oh, by the way, here are all our nearby competitors and what they're charging for similar rooms, just for your convenience..."

That one has potential. But I'm trying black pepper first since it doesn't require me to go buy a bottle of barbecue sauce that I'll only be using for this.

I did something really stoopid the other day. I did mountain climbers barefoot on concrete because the rain had caused puddles to make things slippery for shoes.

Gr, this is why I'm not an IT guy -- even something as simple as checking game requirements against my laptop is frustrating.

Why did I have to go to Steam to find the LotRO mac system requirements? Why does FF14 have minimum but not recommended requirements? Am I wrong that meeting minimum requirements = a laggy buggy experience?

What does it mean if my processor surpasses the min speed requirement, but only matches the 'core i5' part? I guess that must make it a half step above the min requirement and a half step below the recommended. I can only guess.

And how the f#@@ do I compare my Intel card against an nVidia requirement?!

I'd appreciate anyone willing to help; for reference:

LotRO Reqs

FF 14 Reqs

My machine:

Spoiler:
macOS Mojave
version 10.14.3
MacBook Pro (13-inch, Mid 2012)
Processor 2.5 GHz Intel Core i5
Memory 4 GB 1600 MHz DDR3
Graphics Intel HD Graphics 4000 1536 MB

Pretty sure my machine rules out FF 14, never mind Mrs Sunrise's older machines, but not sure at all about LotRO.

I played through all of Books 1 and 2 of FF XIV on my Mac Mini, which is only a skosh powerful than your specs, but yes, I was running at 12-18 fps, and during serious fights the frame rate went into the single digits. It wasn't terrible, but now when I start it up again I think, "How did I manage to play for so long on such a slow system?"

So considering it would be even worse for you, unless you want to run the game at 1080x768, it might not be do-able.

Here's the comparison for you:

Specs:

macOS Mojave --> macOS Mojave
version 10.14.3 --> Version 10.14.3
MacBook Pro (13-inch, Mid 2012) --> Mac mini (Late 2014)
Processor 2.5 GHz Intel Core i5 --> 3 GHz Intel Core i7
Memory 4 GB 1600 MHz DDR3 --> 16 GB 1600 MHz DDR3
Graphics Intel HD Graphics 4000 1536 MB --> Intel Iris 1538 MB

LotRO Mac Requirements.

Version: 10.7.5+ *check*
Processor: 2.0 GHz Intel Core i5 or better *check*
Memory: 2 GB *check* (though supposedly 4 GB is much better than 2 GB for running it even at minimum settings)
GFX: Intel HD 3000+ *check*, assuming that Intel HD 4000 is better than HD 3000

Requires 25 GB on Hard Drive... Though I'd expect it will take more.

You can give it a try, it's free to play until you decide to pay for extras anyway. Unless you pay per amount of transfer, that can make you think twice before downloading the client for tests.

Yeah, but if it's only convenient in the front end, when you get screwed in the rear end it's not actually that convenient...also that sentence did not go as I expected.

Thanks, NH & Drejk. Is there any means of comparison graphics cards from different manufacturers, or is it totally apples v. oranges? 'Cause cards are the thing that really throws me off about system requirements -- I've got an Intel X card, so how am I supposed to compare that to an Nvidia Y or an AMD Z requirement?

I've googled a bit, but the articles I've read gloss over the issue -- "Manually check your machine's specs against a game's requirements" with no explanation how to compare graphics cards, "or use Can You Run It? to auto-check." I'm not even sure that site works for macs, and I'd rather be able to check requirements myself without some website digging into my computer for info.

GothBard made an even better point: At the first four hotels she went to their websites and tried to book rooms, and they all said they were all booked up. Then Bookings.com got her rooms.

Why?

Because nowadays similar to scalpers online booking companies reserve up most of the rooms on their own so you have to do through them...

And so far (knock on wood) we haven't gotten screwed...
