Maybe you can explain it to me then.

What the hell is the appeal of Calistra? Ever since day one of the Golarion setting, she's the one deity I can't wrap my head around why people love her so much. She's easily my least favorite god in the setting.

I really don't care for her much, either. She seems custom-built for fanboyz who want to play dominatrixes.

The problem is, she's the only deity for whom there are high-enough level clerics in the area.

So if you have to play a cleric of Calistria, you've got to go whole hog, and I'll have fun doing it.

But I can immediately think of half a dozen deities I'd rather worship.

EDIT: Most... appropriate... TOP... EVER!!!!!

I could go on and on, but I won't. I suspect she is strongly adored by boys who like to play uber-sexualized women, and women who like to play "sex is power" characters, So basically players who want to focus on their PC's sexuality.

I can see it. I'd rather play something different, but my other choice is Asmodeus and I don't do evil, so, if I have to play it, I might as well do my best.

Oh, but for the record, I built her, and compared to the rest of the party she was an out-and-out goddess. High-level clerics are obscene. She'd so totally change the landscape that we decided I shouldn't do it.

And that right there says something about cleric vs. rogue.

So they did. In that sense, it's not any different than some of the posts/articles I've read that says Power Attack should be a base combat option open to anyone.

The only issue I have with this line of thinking is where does it stop?

Clocking out. Good night, everyone.

NobodysHome wrote:

Man, that feat gives all feats a bad name.

Spoilers for a little feat-ranting:

Spoiler:

I mean a feat that exists solely to compensate for a gamism arising from grid-based positioning rules, a feat that creates totally reasonable and dare I say "realistic" situations, a feat that fosters basic teamwork.

Just...ugh, this kind of issue needs clarification, a faq, a houserule, a little common sense, not a feat tax.

There is another aspect to Calistra, and that's revenge, both petty and justified. Her worship doesn't have to hinge on sex/sexuality.

She's still not really my cup of tea either. I tend to gravitate towards Serenrae more than most of the others when I play divine-leaning characters.

Except I do have a character in mind for a slightly delusional man. He believes himself, and publicly will state that he is, in fact, a Paladin of Nethys. He's not a Paladin. He's not really even a paladin. He's a magus - likely a staff magus - and he goes into the Exalted prestige class. He's delusional about it all and Nethys is just enough "don't give a flyin' fig" about it all (and somewhat unhinged himself) to let it go.

Yeah. My line of thought on it was "If the person is having to divide attention to two assailants that are on the opposite sides of his/her body, and therefore the assailants get a bonus to attack...then why the hell doesn't the third, fourth, or fifth assailant not also get the same bonus?" I also have personal experience in the matter, so there's also that.

Now that I see there's a feat for it...that's a feat that I can blissfully ignore in the groups I DM/GM. Now, of course, someone else's campaign means adhering to their rules.

Sarenrae's a great go-to.

Personally I want to play a paladin of Erastil, because then I'd be playing myself. Playing with myself? Does that make me fall?

NobodysHome wrote:

So is it just me, or are the Archives of Nethys really fairly useless as a reference document?

With the PRD, it was, "Expand the book, expand the chapter, read the rule."

With AoN, first you have to accept that the load time per page will be roughly 60-120 seconds, so you'd better have the pages loaded before you get started. Then good luck finding something you've never heard of.

I was trying to look up a monster that had psychic magic. I've never worked with psychic magic. There's no "Occult Adventures" book section of AoN. So I had to do a search. And got too many results so I had to filter, but of course filtering was another LOOOOOONG wait.

I'm really hoping he upgrades to a different host soon as he says he will; the performance right now is so bad that all the stuff I used to do live with the PRD (keep monsters, spells, and rules up in separate tabs as I run) just isn't feasible because at a 1-2 minute load time to page, it would take me an hour just to load all the stuff...

EDIT: I mean, AoN is the "official" PRD site, but d20PFSRD is SO much faster and easier to navigate it's scary.

I've had performance issues with d20pfsrd on Saturday mornings and early afternoons where it's just as slow as AoN. I would easily believe it's most likely the peak time for traffic hitting the server(s), particularly since it's been many, many Saturdays that I've ran into that. But outside of that brief window, yes, my experience with AoN is exactly the same.

And my only personal issue with d20pfsrd is a feature for many others - the ease of which people can find and mix/match material from different sources. I don't allow 3rd party stuff until I vet it first, and it isn't always readily apparent what is and what is not 3rd party on his site.

It's kind of like NH's "No Player Companion line of books allowed" rule, but more of a "banned until I have a chance to review it" and think on the matter. My biggest concerns are does it duplicate something in a slightly different way that Paizo already published, and what interactions with other feats/features are they trying to get to synergize that's going to be more powerful than even I'm willing to entertain.

Only if you're supremely uncoordinated.

We have a ranger of Erastil being played by Zelda's son (I really have to get some nicknames for the kids) in Ruins of Azlant. He would be terrible at playing a paladin.

The Exchange

My office is holding a safety poster competition among our staff, of which I am one of the organizers.

The themes are “Save the hand/Finger”, and “Safety First, no Shortcuts”
So these were the submissions:

Vessel 1
Vessel 2
Office

So basically I’ve been busy on printing everything out and pasting everything on the wall for the judges to judge so I haven’t been very active.

My favorite is the dude balancing on the stacked chairs. Although that's less finger related.

The one with the x-ray of the broken finger I feel is the most effective because looking at it made me cringe a bit.

Though I have been known to urm...pull myself up storeroom shelves(at home) to get stuff. Lazy to go get a stool, besides I view it as some form of parkour training.

Ok...my thoughts on rogues and their shortcomings and how to fix/mitigate it.

The original rogue is a touch under-powered. I think a lot of it was fixed with the unchained rogue. Rogue's Edge handled a lot of their shortcomings with skills, but they're still in a dogfight with bards and investigators for the "best skill-monkey" title.

For in-combat issues, really I think the biggest one is that they don't have an accuracy boost ability. Magus, cleric, druid, etc...all use the same BAB as rogues but all of them have built in ways to boost accuracy or completely go around the need to use BAB at all with spells. Rogues just really don't have any of that.

So I have 3 house rules...

1) Flanked as a condition. If you have flanking set up between a fighter and a barbarian as per the normal rules of flanking, I now count the target in the middle as having the "flanked" condition, meaning that *any* additional person walking up to that target can beat on it with a +2 bonus to hit, sneak attack applies on all attacks made within 30' (not counting other abilities that may come into play), feats that operate off of flanking work for anyone that's in the correct range regardless of positioning, etc, etc, etc. It means that third-wheel rogue doesn't have to try to shove the clueless fighter out of the way to get flanking bonuses. It means the ranged rogue can actually get their sneak attack in more often than just at the beginning of the combat or from invisibility.

2) Sneak Attack grants an additional +1 bonus to hit per die of sneak attack damage. Maybe a touch much on a slayer, but there's the accuracy boost for rogues/ninjas. Still sucks if you're fighting elementals or incorporeal creatures, but that sucks regardless.

3) This is just a general house rule that makes martials into death machines, which is what I prefer to do rather than nerf everything else. I don't penalize iterative attacks from high BAB. If you have a +11 BAB, then

...

this doesn't need to be one. Rogues need to be constant dirty fighters and this as a universal rule helps them to be such immensely.

I believe she was described somewhere as a 'quintessentially Elven goddess', which might have put an interesting slant on Elven society & culture, but if I'm right, they don't seem to have developed the idea.

I've always thought you and gran are Vitriolic Best Buds and when one is not around, the other will pine.

Kali is the god of thungee and disease. I learnt that from The Serpents Shadow by Mercedes Lackey.

I told someone to keep his trophies at the pathfinder lodge. Dude, there are kids at the convention!

Unless going the revenge angle, I would find a cleric of calistra not an appropriate character to play at conventions.

Someone please think about the kids!

Where's your animal companion, or what domain are you?

Domain. for sure. I don't know which one yet however.

Yup, I'm sore this morning.

As far as favorite Pathfinder deities, my favorites are Desna, Sarenrae, and Pharasma.

My least favorite is Gorum.

I hardly ever use Paizo deities for my games but my favorite of them is Nethys followed by Cayden.

I like Nethys too because he doesn't tell you how to live your life, though me and Erastil would probably get along well. Gozreh too. Again, large cat.

Every time I see Gozrehs name I think there talking about the guy in the painting from ghost busters 2.

Some days I'm all for Rovagug too.

I did construction work a long time ago. I don't miss it.

This is shoveling snow.

Personally, I love construction, I always wanted to be an archeologist but didn't have the grades so this is the next best thing.

Nethys is alright, for a god of magic, which has always seemed like a silly concept to me.

Although not as silly as the god of atheism they have in Starfinder.

Hey most ancient mythology had a god or goddess of magic. Odin, Hecate, Toth (I think Toth was it anyways.)

God of atheism is really Loki he just enjoys messing with people.

You know now that I think about it assuming that deities get their power from number of followers (which I think is not the case in paizo) a god of atheism would be insanely powerful. Hes get buffs for every drop of doubt out there. basically an anti-deity. I think they had something like that in epic level handbook but I could be mistaken.

Oh wait it wasn't in ELH I think it was in Elder evils.

Flying to minnesota today.

Plane is having radio trouble. We are back at the gate while a maintenance crew tries to fix it.
Which means I can take the phone of airplane mode and relax by browsing FaWtL.

So far we've been delayed by an hour.

Just found out late yesterday that the network team needs me to work at 11pm tonight for 2-4 hours. And I still have to cover my normal hours today and tomorrow morning.

And I've been told to expect to be going back to Virginia again at pretty much any time.

That's not it. I don't have any issue with a sex deity or a revenge deity. Either of those alone would be fine. Nothing wrong with playing a sexual character; nothing wrong with going full Inigo Montoya. It's the combination of lust and revenge in one entity that makes me nope out.

Calistria is the patron of stalkers and psycho-exes. Calistria is backing that guy who's cheesed off you turned him down at the bar and is going to give him the spells to teach you a lesson in the parking lot. Calistria's favorite song is either "Goodbye Earl" or "Before He Cheats."

And unfortunately, Golarion putting her as essentially the chief elven deity means I'm forced to associate elves with this behavior.
