They're expensive because they're the only ones who knew what in the heck they were doing.

There are very few adages in the world more true than the following when it comes to service:

YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR!!!!!

I have rarely found this to be true. I find you more get what you research and negotiate for.

My nudity, for example, has been vetted by several sources and is quite negotiable.

I don't care how much you pay me, you're STILL getting a bargain.

Ah, Fallout 76! You entertain me every night! Because I listen to the pain of others playing you!

-----
GothBard: NO! I did not WANT to take off my power armor! Where did it go?
Shiro: Hey, I found some really nice power armor a little ways back. But there was no one in it!
GothBard: Shut up and give that to me! And how did I fall out of power armor, anyway?
-----
Lara Croft Guy: I'm stuck! I fell in a hole and I can't get out! I'll have to fast travel to escape!
Shiro: How deep is it?
LCG: About 3 feet.
NobodysHome: So you're telling me humanity's last hope, the well-trained intrepid explorers of Vault 76, cannot climb out of 3' holes?
LCG: Well, to be honest it seems like our "training" was just standing around doing nothing for a lot of years...

Shiro: I'm stuck under your house again.
GothBard: !?!? How did you get there THIS time?
Shiro: I kind of phased through the floor and ended up just walking here.
GB: Can you get out?
S: No, I'm going to have to fast travel.

Well, there you go, Bethesda.

The group encountered their first chance at monetization in Fallout '76.

All three of them specifically decided not to monetize because of Bethesda's behavior towards its bugs.

So yep. They're losing money because they don't care.

Nice job, Bethesda!

(It's not the bugs they mind nearly as much as reporting a bug, only to get a response of, "We don't particularly care. Please don't bother us with such trivia," to anything you report.)

LOL. Shiro is now explaining to GothBard that every time the server crashes, your power core resets to 100% charged. So he uses it as a "charging station". He puts in a partially-used power core, waits for the game to crash (which happens at least once an hour), swaps out his new 100% charged one for another partially-charged one, etc.

I don't think he even knows how you're supposed to charge them...

The Exchange

Helped my aunt get a 15 kg computer chair back from IKEA yesterday and helped her set up appointments for digital TV today. Now to decouple the singtel line from the fibre broadband so I can use the free starhub line.

Half of that was nonsense to me.

The Exchange

Starhub gave me free broadband for 2 years after I signed up for renewal for cable TV, so in my house I have Singtel and Starhub broadband at the same time. And we're still paying for the Singtel broadband.

Oh. ok.

15kg is 33lbs. That sounds like a lot for a computer chair.

We'll have to have a go at sajoer beans, seeing as ALL (DE) is going veggie for 2019. Those look tasty!

Sajoer beans is one of my favorites! Its also ridicilously easy to scale up if you have more people to cook for.

When my grandmother was in the hospital this second time, I pulled the jar of her sourdough starter (it's probably older than NH) out of the back of the fridge and have worked for a week to resurrect it. I was almost certain that the move from Cali and months of neglect since then had killed it. But, after feeding twice a day in a heavy glass pitcher in a warm corner of the kitchen, it is full of bubbles (like the top of a pancake when it's almost ready to flip) and it smells right again.

I'm not going to say that I did it to get Gigi out of the hospital. I know magical thinking is stupid. But it worked. Plus, now I get to make "Grandma Bread" again. (The BEST whole wheat sourdough.)

Today is the last day of vacation. Tomorrow is inservice all day.
So after church, we're going to the zoo (it's supposed to be in the mid-60's here today) and then coming home and having the pierogi and mushroom soup and poppyseed cake that we didn't get on Christmas Eve because my sister decided to change plans at the last minute. (Not bitter, really; it just doesn't feel like a proper Christmas Eve if you eat American holiday food.) I thought the kids didn't care, but it turned out they missed having poppyseed cake. Especially because they weren't allowed to eat any of the rum cake that Eve made instead. (For good reason.)

And tomorrow the plumbers are supposed to come fix the leak under the bathroom floor, six days after we called it in. I'm dreading my water bill.

lisamarlene wrote:

Meh. While I'm sure northern Texas is nearly as drought-torn as California, when our gardener left our soaker hose running for two solid weeks, upping our usage from 140 gallons/day to 250 gallons/day, the difference in the water bill was under $30. (Roughly 25%)

Water is amazingly cheap.

Now natural gas on the other hand...
...grumbles yet again about the kids' inability to close the doors to the core of the house to keep the heat in...

4 people marked this as a favorite.

OK, giving credit where credit is due: On Christmas day, I washed all the laundry in the house, and told the family that because folding laundry was my most-hated chore, I wasn't going to do it. I've done another 5-6 loads of laundry since then, and the mountain of clean-but-unfolded clothes on the kitchen table reached epic proportions (maybe 3' high by 4' in diameter, like a baby shambling mound).

The kids were happily fishing laundry out of it, and I thought I was going to be staring at that laundry pile for the rest of my days.

Yesterday GothBard finally declared that enough was enough, I shouldn't have to do ALL the chores in the house, and she and the Impii were required to fold 5 pieces of laundry a day forevermore.

It doesn't sound like much, but cleaning by attrition is amazingly effective. Since we don't wear 15 different pieces of clothing a day, the pile will eventually evaporate.

My family is actually doing chores! Woo hoo!

Fold laundry? What for?

I am doing laundry at the moment...

I'm finishing up laundry before packing and driving back to Cincinnati for the week.

Because me driving is cheaper for the company than airfare plus a rental car. And they're still paying my hourly rate, my gas, and my mileage.

Laundry is in the wash as we speak here.

I'll probably fold it tomorrow, maybe. No promises.

I'm...doing laundry too...

This is kinda weird, us all doing laundry simultaneously.

Well, color me concerned.

As I've mentioned, Hi is basically homeless, living out of a storage unit somewhere in Berkeley or Emeryville, and occasionally house-sitting for his brother down in the south bay. So he has no land line, nor do I know any of his addresses.

On Friday night he gamed with us for the evening. Saturday morning everyone popped online to find him still on TeamSpeak -- we could hear him occasionally coughing, but he couldn't hear us, nor did we think much of it... until he missed our lunch date at Sobo. He loves Sobo.

I texted him and called him, but his phone's turned off. (He does it to avoid being tracked, being a bit of a paranoid sort.) He hasn't signed on to Final Fantasy in 24 hours. He's still on TeamSpeak, but all we hear is an occasional cough.

And there's nothing we can do about it..

Friends, if you decide to be homeless, share your location with your friends. The Berkeley police would be happy to do a wellness check for me, except, "Look for a homeless guy living out of a car next to a storage facility" would be a wellness check on dozens, if not hundreds, of people, and the police aren't going to do that.

Just hoping he's OK, but when next I hear from him I am *SO* getting an address out of the man!

In other completely random news, sometimes I really wonder about Bay Area residents.

OK, we don't really have "rain", so people don't own heavy raincoats; they tend to make do with trenchcoats and umbrellas. But what about your feet?

I have a pair of LL Bean Duck Boots that I've owned for 26 years now (I paid only $30 for them), and they're still absolutely amazing in terms of warmth, comfort, and, above all, absolute waterproofness. Yes, they're significantly more expensive these days, but what does everyone around here wear? Sneakers!

I kid you not. We're getting 2" of rain in the next 48 hours. Our drainage isn't designed to handle this much rain, so we have puddles 2" deep and 6-8' across. And people are wandering around in plain old ordinary canvas and/or leather sneakers.

The kids under 10 and the elderly over 70 are in galoshes, because they have sense. I'm in my duck boots. But going to the Farmer's Market and seeing everyone miserable and shivering with soaking wet feet was... astonishing.

Wet feet are the worst. Especially in cold weather! Go to Target and get some knock-offs, people!

If his Team Speak is still on, there is an internet connection to be traced for the police—assuming they would believe there might be a genuine risk to his life and health.

We get a lot more rain than that and nobody I know owns or uses any sort of different footwear unless they tend to go stomping around in bogs or something. <_<

I do the laundry, fold it and iron it at my aunts house. If a job's gotta be done it's gotta be done.

We've split laudry for that reason. I do mine. And MrT does his. I wash and dry mine, then fold it and put it in the right place. His lives in a basket, stuffed into the closet, ect. Untill he wears it and it does into a hamper again.
He can be responsible for that, and I will be responsible for mine.
